Hello again One suggestion is to start a Facebook page for Beara DNA. There is a similar page for Cork DNA which focuses on the city. There are other groups in the USA who have West Cork connections but they focus on one family who are descendants of one man (the Aomos Collins page springs to mind). At present there is an Allihies FB page and an Allihies - the Copper Road page. Either of these pages could consider hosting the Beara DNA information exchange or a separate Beara DNA page could be launched. Both of the pages mentioned could explain the spread of sporadic matches that people have from Beara to Waterford. There are other explanations but that is one where those experience in mining and transportation followed that route (and some followed the brewing apparently). If interested in finding family links through DNA testing , then you should opt for aautosomal DNA test. These are the Family Finder Test from FTDNA, the 23andme test is an autosomal test and there is the Ancestry Test. here is a link for information purposes only. I have tested with all three but am just a user of these tests and not representative of any company. http://www.myheritage.com/all-dna-tests To share the information those interested could (a) test their autosomal DNA (generally just requires you to spit into a tube) (b) load your results to gedmatch (c) share genealogical information. A spreadsheet of Beara connections/ matches will help and there are free genealogical spreadsheets or tools available for this purpose . Consider setting up a Beara specific DNA project at FTDNA. There is a facility for doing this at Family Tree DNA....just look at there projects page at www.ftdna.org I bought the three volumes of Riobard's Annals of Beara so that is a great help. This will help pool all the work massive done by Riobard O Dwyer, by Bill Gawne and others over the years. It might even help me (and others) to find out the basis of links to the Sullivans, the Downings/Downeys/ Sheehans / Murphys ....and I have matches to all of them. It is a great way to honour our "lost" connections. So, test :-) I hope to get down to the Sheepshead and Beara in April and will have some 23andme and FTDNA kits with me so as to test a few unsuspecting volunteers.
