To Diana & all our friends on the Beara column who wished us a happy New Year, Joan & I again wish you all the best and every happiness throughout 2016. No, my birthday is on May 30th. But today for me, is also a sad day. It is the 1st anniversary of the death of my sister Maura (married to Batt Burns of Sneem, Co. Kerry, with whom she travelled for many years in the States playing Irish traditional music on the concertina, while Batt entertained the crowds with his story-telling of the olden days in Ireland). Maura was a Nurse in her younger years. She died of motor-neuron in her home in Sneem a year ago tonight. Joan's father Joe's (now dead) birthday was also today. He was born in Eyeries just a week before his father, Quinn (or Quinlan), had died mining in Butte, Montana, trying to make a few dollars to send home to his wife Johanna who had returned from Butte shortly before that.
