Hi Nancy, My mother Honoria Sheehan Neus was related to Denis Sheehan -born May 1838. Denis went to America from Cahermore. Then returned. His father bought a farm for him in Billerough. He married Lena Broderick. Their 10 children: John; Liz (Mrs Tyrrel); Valentine (m. Ann McNally);Bridget (m Jamesie Cummings) Den; James; Ellen (m Dan Lehane & John O'Hanlon); kate; Ed (m Kate Shea); Mike. My grandfather Patrick Sheehan, (b Sept 14, 1848) was brother to the 1848 Denis. Their parents were John Sheehan & Bess Sullivan. If you have other data, I'd appreciate it. All the best. Hi Reg, I've never used that site and it seems a bit expensive. Why not go directly to the GRO? Just curious... http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm John

Maybe a stupid question, but can I get an actual death record/certificate online from Ireland. My ancestor died on Jan 2, 1884 in Cahermore, Allihies Parish, registration district is Castletown and I found him in the death index in the family history library. Just wondering where I could get the actual death record. Also would like to get his wife's death record, she died on Nov 25, 1883 - for Denis Sheehan and Ellen Spring Sheehan. Thanks
Sue, Look for John and Catherine Crowly, not Neil. What i should have typed previously was "... Ellen Crowly, daughter of John and Catherine (Neil)." :) John
thank you, John, so much for your help. I also am very curious about John and Catherine Neil and searched for them in Wales as that is where Ellen Mahony Neil and children went. I think Jeremiah also went and died within a year or two; he was not listed in the 1851 Wales census, but "his" presumably last son was born there is 1849. I did find a death for a Jeremiah Neil in 1849 in freebmd. I didn't find Catherine and John Neil in Wales, but names sometimes are "changed" so that doesn't prove much. Otherwise I just trying to sort out the various names to see if, by any chance, I can work out relationships?? Again, thank you. Demetrium and Ellenan would be the latinized names for Jeremiah and Ellen http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Roman-Catholic-baptism.html http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/f092a50053404 Some of these baptism records are likely of interest (and could be where you have found some of your information) *http://tinyurl.com/7w9maxs * One that caught my eye was that of Ellen Crowly, daughter of John and Catherine Neil. The sponsors were Jeremiah and Ellen Neil. Unfortunately, the possible marriage record for John and Catherine is also missing townland and parents. http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/0db6140018277 Also, the sponsors of Patrick O'Neill were Daniel and Johana O'Neill. And then, in addition to Reg's response, you can always search for townlands, parishes, etc at seanruad.com. It can be as simple as listing all of the townlands in County Cork, and then using your browsers "find" function (generally, Control + F in Windows), you can enter partial spellings to sift through the information, especially when you're not sure what type of place the name really represents. Good luck, John
Another really beautiful photo essay by Sue who have a very special gift indeed in regard to these things! Sue has captured one item that should be of specific interest in her photo selection : the eight photo in the series show what appear to be a series of boulder stones in the foreground and more conventional gravestones in the background. All in fact are grave marking stones. While inscribed gravestones for illustrious people are common place since the early Christian period and a few from before, there is little mark to resting places of the common people. There were a few reasons for this, one being that the pre Christian and Early Christian culture was still substantially oral in the retaining and transmitting of knowledge. Land and identification with the land was paramount for the tribe as a whole and it's individuals. This not only applied to the tribal region as a whole, it also did to the individual parts of it and the families identification with these areas. Up to the last third quarter of the 19th, century it was still quite common in most parts of the West of ireland for families to take a distinctive stone from their home farm to the graveyard and use this as a marker stone for new graves. Every family knew the unique shape shape of it's own stone. Wars, local famines, mass emigrations and other population displacements broke these connections and the oral knowledge. Starting with the 'Hell or to Connaught' Cromwellian period of ethnic cleansing and peaking in the mass emigration of the Great Famine and post famine period, and whole families and indeed generations of families gone, those who could identify these individual graves were no longer there. The late John B Keane actually devoted a play to this topic of attempting to locate a grave and the significance it held for the family. http://en. wikipedia .org/wiki/ John_B._Keane and his play has even been turned into an opera. http://www. opera projects. org/sharongrave. htm (remove spaces to restore live links) Some of my own Great Grandparents graves are marked in this way. When exiles are trying for records of burials and they are told that they do not exist, the graves such as marked by these boulders exist, but in the intervening century and a quarter plus years, the living local oral historians who could link who knew the individual stones to the families concerned are long gone. Incidently for returning relatives who can locate the actual graveyard holding their ancestors remains, but not the individual graves, it is relatively easy to get permission to have a small memorial plaque placed on the inside of the graveyard wall, such as in photos 10 and 11, This would indeed be a nice and fitting closure, to what often has been a long, moving search and it also places something there for future generations. Nice one Karen, almost as good as a howler I made in an exchange some years back in correspondence with somebody in the US West Coast. They said that they were from Sebastapool and of course I thought of the Crimean and assumed the person was from there forgetting that the Irish were not the only emigrants to bring over town names with them. My contact was yankee bred, born and reared! Long story : a West Coast choir used one of my poems and set it to music for a winter concert. http:// www. occidentalchoir. org/item/ 45902- red-gold-moon As usual remove the spaces for site if interested. I'm researching my father's family from Whiddy Island and wonder if you could tell me if Whiddy Islanders (1820-1900) would have been buried on Whiddy Island, or in Bantry, perhaps? Do you know the name of any relevant cemetery, and if inscriptions from its graves might be found on a website? Thank you very much for any help you can give me. Sincerely, Judy Donovan
The New Haven, CT directories are similarly, very good. Sometimes they list the deaths that year, giving the age of the person. I have also seen a listing by street of who lives at a given address. On ancestry they can be a bit tedious to go through, page by page, but worth the effort.
