Dear people of Beara@rootsweb. com                                                             The time has come to pass on and say goodbye to my Records from Beara which will shortly be housed by the NEHGS, the Genealogical, etc. Society, the oldest library collection in the world, founded in Boston in 1845, and will be available, to all researchers, from their address in 99-101 Newbury Street, Boston, Mass.,  reasonably shortly ---- in possibly six months, or so. For circa 50 years, and often into the early hours of the morning, I have spent, all on my own, researching our Beara ancestors of the 6 Parishes of the Peninsula, and trying to trace them all over the world. As a result of my research I had, as you might say, driven myself "into the ground" so much so that I spent time in Hospital and at home, during which my wife Joan thought that I had about two weeks to live at one stage. But, however, I pulled myself together and battled back, and "tore into my research work" once more. I am delighted to have saved what would have been lost forever. The people (and especially the old people, who have long since gone to their eternal reward R.I.P.) and the Priests of the various Parishes were really helpful, So was my faithful accordion, now 53 years old but still going strong. I had once to purchase a new trousers, as the one I was wearing at the time got torn by the furze and briars in one of the Cemeteries, as I was often even on my hands and knees, trying to "make out" what was written on the headstones.                                                             During all that time I travelled thousands of miles. However, one the things that kept me going over those years was the happiness that my work has brought to the high number of people all over the world who would have never been able to trace their ancestors, or who would never have met, or have been put in contact with many relatives that they had never before heard of,                                                             As a result, many, many people have come to visit the lovely, scenic, Beara Peninsula, the land of their ancestors. My wife Joan and I have had the pleasure of meeting several of the nicest and most appreciative people you could find. Many have arrived at our door in the the middle of my meals or of my research work on Family Trees, but we have always made them welcome in our home, and I have often played Irish traditional music on my accordion for them, and have done our utmost to make their visit to the Peninsula of their ancestors a most memorable and happy one.                                                             Now, in some of the lovely words of the Poet Tim McCarthy, I will finish with our best wishes to all:       "Dear Beara, my memories shall ever be cherished       Whatever my fate or my fortune may be,       And though I am destined to sail o'er the ocean,       My thoughts shall forever turn fondly to thee".                           ---- Riobard, ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BEARA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Dear Riobard and all Friends of Beara,   I thought you might all like to have the following information.  By chance, I came across a website with an interview from Betty Sullivan of Billerough, who emigrated to USA. 1886 and became a maid.  She was interviewed because her employer was murdered.  There is a photograph and transcript.  I think it is the original voice of Betty, but there is not enough information to authenticate it.   If it is her own voice, then she lost the Irish accent within 3 years (being 20 when emigrating and 23 when interviewed).   She certainly has the family resemblance.  I know there are lots of us related to this lady, and it is very weird hearing a "ghost" ancestor voice and photograph of a person previously unknown, who was born in the 1860s.   ttp://lostboys.hissown.com/janedoe/swf/betty.swf       Also, Ancestry.com are opening their 1930 US. Census free for everyone to look at from 16th to 20th February approximately - just the weekend, so get in quick.  The US. censuses give a lot more details than the British ones.   Ancestry.com Mary Funnell (Harrington (Trokirre)/Sheehan/O'Sullivan ancestry) Brighton East Sussex England

    3. Hi Reg, without checking up on this specific reference I cannot give you a straight answer to that ! I am however a member of the Sauniere Society and since cardiac forced early retirement in 2004, I have attended quite a few conferences where 'Hidden' History /Religion / Early Christianity/ The Jesus ben Joseph / St James movement etc intersect and overlap. I have had the privilege of hearing open seminars and 'behind closed doors discussions' of possibly up to fifty International serious writers in this area at this stage. There seem to be another clutch of books in this area every Monday morning, especially since the Da Vinci Code..... most complete and total speculative nonsense! Most also feed off each other and quote each other, yet the sad fact is that for anyone au fe with this area, they are lucky to get a half dozen or so pages of new information in each new book. Celtic /New Age sells big time and where there is a market, there is a product tailored to fill it. I welcome unorthodox and genuinely speculative books that challenge the 'status quo' but many of these books are closer to fiction than fact. Be careful out there folks, be very careful indeed when spending your euros, dollars or whatever in this material.! 3. BDM......Irish Births, Deaths and Marrages on line. How to post live or hot links using this as an example. http:// www. birthsdeathsmarriages.ie/ content/bdmonline/ cms.nsf/ content/ FAQs For readers who are not already aware of the checks on this site, Bill makes use of 'a stripper' to take out life em addresses. The primary purpose of this facility is to prevent spam and advertising. Unfortunately it also has the result of deleating genuine site address information from posts. To post a necessary site address, the following methodology can be used..... 1) copy and paste in the address in the usual way, it will then show up as a 'live' link when saved.( save to draft letter to check if in doubt ) 2) copy and paste a second time, in the second post insert a number of spaces over the length of the address and in this format 'The Stripper' will not recognize the information an em address when posted. 3) on receipt of such a 'spaces inserted' address, remove the spaces using the curser and the delete button. This will restore the single, unbroken line reference, but the address is still not live. 4) copy this on to the edit facility on your toolbar and then paste the copy of the link back into the original em. The computer program will then recognize the em address and designate it as a hot or live link. 5) the link should come up colored blue, fully restored as a normal em address, 'hot' or live with a direct link to the site required. 6 ) delete (3) once the live link is established to avoid inadvertently posting on a 'dead link' at a later date. I hope that this will be of some benefit to allow those not used to 'tweaking' computer programs to transmit and receive necessary, worth while em addresses. While Bill's 'stripper' ( he may have to explain my reference to his good wife if she is following the Beara Roots site !) serves a very useful, necessary function and prevents spam, it also unfortunately sometimes prevents transmission of convenient addresses or worthwhile information. This is one way around the system if it is used responsibly. I hope that in identifying this process I am not also encouraging a few of 'the usual suspercts' to deluge the site with junk. 3. Hello Donal, all, To clarify, the way the Rootsweb stripper works (or is supposed to work) is by stripping away attachments. Attachments are files attached to e-mail messages which can be anything from electronic signatures (.sig files) to malicious javascript contained in compressed (.zip) files. Ordinary URL (Universal Resource Locator) links shouldn't be stripped away from the e-mail messages, though sometimes it appears they have been. But it should be possible to have the ordinary URL link that Donal posted shown without the added spaces. http://www.birthsdeathsmarriages.ie/content/bdmonline/cms.nsf/content/FAQs Bill Gawne donal O'Siodhachain <dospoet@gmail.com> writes: > BDM......Irish Births, Deaths and Marrages on line. 3. I really am confused, so pardon the questions... At the bmdonline site, it costs 37.50 euro to obtain records from outside Ireland. ( http://www.birthsdeathsmarriages.ie/content/bdmonline/cms.nsf/systemcontent/cost&payment ) At the GRO site, it costs 10 euro to obtain seemingly the same record. ( http://www.groireland.ie/fees.htm) In fact, I have obtained all of my records through the GRO, generally through the local registrars. Have things changed in the last couple of years? Why would I wish to pay 25 euro more for the same record? I realize that the bmdonline site acknowledge the GRO... *"BDM acknowledge and extend our thanks to Comhairle, the Data Protection Commissioner, the General Registry Office and the Dept of Social & Family Affairs for their help in keeping the information and services provided compliant with Data Protection Laws and as up-to-date as possible."* ... but site strikes me as a commercial enterprise that is charging extra for a service. I know we have a number of those sites here in the US. Nothing wrong with that, but the GRO method has always been so easy. Cheers. John

    3. Dear Nancy & Beara, Denis Sheehan & his wife Elen both died in Kilkinnihan, Allihies Parish. Denis was 15 years older than Ellen. Denis was sick for 12 months before he died. Ellen was sick for 1 week before she died from influenza and pneumonia. Their daughter Georgina was with them both when they died. ----- Riobard. 3. Jane, All Thank you for the information about "International Currency Express". I too couldn't get an international money order from the local post office. I tried to use my bank on Cape Cod who had to do the transaction via the main Boston branch. The tellers had never done a transaction like it, we were all shocked at the fees. I needed a 20 EURO check for the deeds office in Dublin, it converted to roughly $25..I paid an additional $50 in bank fees for their transaction and it was 3 days before Boston mailed the check to my local branch. Sadly there were probably 2 Henry O'Briens' in Clogheen, Tipp. in the 1700's. I hardly think my Henry owned property in Cork City(site of the present Butter Exchange), dwellings in Clogheen and then eked out an existence on the few acres in Kileatin, Clogheen where my gggg grandfather was born in a one room dwelling! There were multiple Henry O'Briens' in Clogheen apparently, I'm now the proud owner of a will for the wealthy one. It is a rather interesting will but not for $75! 2. What a trial! I always try to post information for mistaken family members on line somewhere, in the US, generally at the county site on USGenWeb. I have had thank yous when their actual relatives find it. I'm a bit puzzled, I haven't been through this process myself, but a friend got all of her birth, marriage and death certificates online. I thought it was at the National Archives. She used her bank card to pay a small deposit and then she ordered the originals and instantly got a digital copy of the record. It cost less than five dollars for each. International commerce is a pay and I hate making banks any richer than they need to be. 3. Sue, Try calling the post office and ask if you can get an International Money Order in GBP Sterling. (See -> https://www.usps.com/shop/money-orders.htm ; ignore the list of 29 countries. Those are the ones that accept money orders in US$.) Or at the banks, ask for a Foreign Currency Draft. Good luck, John
