I have found a couple of interesting looking things in the Cork Examiner, 1840s etc. Does anyone know where one can search these online? for free, as there are many people by the same name and I have no idea who, if any, might be my ancestor? 1. [BEARA] Boston Butte Society - FYI
    2. Boston Beara Society On Sunday March 25th the Boston Beara Society meets to celebrate its heritage and support those who make that special effort toward its preservation and promotion for present and future generations. The most recent accomplishment in this regard is the completion of a state-of-the-art archive building in Butte, Montana. Many have had family members living in Butte through the period of cultural and industrial nation building and their documented contributions are now preserved in this climate- and humidity-controlled facility. Coming from Butte to speak to the Society will be the archivist of the collection, Ellen Crain. The Society committee has chosen to recognise Mr Bob Walsh for his many years of dedication to The Knights and Ladies of St Finbarr as well as his support of the Boston Beara Society. The event takes place from 2 to 7pm on Sunday March 25th at the Florian Hall, Dorchester, MA. Dinner, dance music with Andy Healy, door prizes, audience participation and more! Tickets, $50, will be held at the door by calling any committee member: Pat Dwyer 617 328 6690, Brian Mc Carthy 617 821 8916, John Harrington 617 282 5652, Kathy Sullivan 781 329 0584 and Mike Dwyer 781 326 1977.

    2. Riobard Thanks for all you do and have done. Best Corby Anderson Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -----Original Message----- From: "Riobard O' Dwyer" <bearariobard@gmail.com> Sender: beara-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Tue, 21 Feb 2012 13:13:14 To: <beara@rootsweb.com>; <bearariobard@gmail.com> Reply-To: beara@rootsweb.com Subject: [BEARA] Goodbye to my Records from Beara. Dear people of Beara@rootsweb. com The time has come to pass on and say goodbye to my Records from Beara which will shortly be housed by the NEHGS, the Genealogical, etc. Society, the oldest library collection in the world, founded in Boston in 1845, and will be available, to all researchers, from their address in 99-101 Newbury Street, Boston, Mass., reasonably shortly ---- in possibly six months, or so. For circa 50 years, and often into the early hours of the morning, I have spent, all on my own, researching our Beara ancestors of the 6 Parishes of the Peninsula, and trying to trace them all over the world. As a result of my research I had, as you might say, driven myself "into the ground" so much so that I spent time in Hospital and at home, during which my wife Joan thought that I had about two weeks to live at one stage. But, however, I pulled myself together and battled back, and "tore into my research work" once more. I am delighted to have saved what would have been lost forever. The people (and especially the old people, who have long since gone to their eternal reward R.I.P.) and the Priests of the various Parishes were really helpful, So was my faithful accordion, now 53 years old but still going strong. I had once to purchase a new trousers, as the one I was wearing at the time got torn by the furze and briars in one of the Cemeteries, as I was often even on my hands and knees, trying to "make out" what was written on the headstones. During all that time I travelled thousands of miles. However, one the things that kept me going over those years was the happiness that my work has brought to the high number of people all over the world who would have never been able to trace their ancestors, or who would never have met, or have been put in contact with many relatives that they had never before heard of, As a result, many, many people have come to visit the lovely, scenic, Beara Peninsula, the land of their ancestors. My wife Joan and I have had the pleasure of meeting several of the nicest and most appreciative people you could find. Many have arrived at our door in the the middle of my meals or of my research work on Family Trees, but we have always made them welcome in our home, and I have often played Irish traditional music on my accordion for them, and have done our utmost to make their visit to the Peninsula of their ancestors a most memorable and happy one. Now, in some of the lovely words of the Poet Tim McCarthy, I will finish with our best wishes to all: "Dear Beara, my memories shall ever be cherished Whatever my fate or my fortune may be, And though I am destined to sail o'er the ocean, My thoughts shall forever turn fondly to thee". ---- Riobard, ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BEARA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [BEARA] Appreciation
    2. Riobard O' Dwyer
    3. Dear friends in beara@rootsweb.com I would like to say a heartfelt, sincere thanks to those of you who emailed, etc., me with their appreciation of all the stories and comments I sent to beara@rootsweb.com /beara-l@rootsweb.com over the years. I hope they gave you many hours of interest while you relaxed. For those who need the full birth and Baptismal dates, the godparents, and the marriage dates, etc. (where possible) of the Baptisms , you should find them in the records I am forwarding to Boston. All the records will also include the townlands of the Bonane section of the Bonane, Co. Kerry / Glengarriff, Co. Cork, Parish. Unfortunately, it is too late to ask me to find those, as the records are now packed and ready to go. My Genealogy days are over, and I suppose I will be lonely after them when they go out the door for the last time, as lonely as the old woman out the country, far away away from neighbours, who wrote letters to herself and gave them to the postman so that he would call with them the next time he would return. There was an old custom that when the house was being built, a holy medal or a money coin was to be placed under the first stones that would be set in place on both sides of what would eventually be the door/entrance. The ancient customs, together with the superstitions, are quickly dying out. Those customs are to be found in my records as well. I wish all those who will be attending the forthcoming Boston Beara Society the best of enjoyment. The speaker this time is a lovely, pleasant, woman called Ellen Crain from Butte, Montana. It brings me back in memory to the two wonderful nights when I spoke to the Boston Beara Society, and told yarns/stories, stepdanced, and "knocked fog" out of the accordion. Oh, God be with the good old days !! ----- ''Tis time to go to bed. Riobard.

    3. Dear Janet, I never realized it at the time. But I had got so weak that my good friend Dan Shea, when he was after a visit from the States to Eyeries, said to somebody on his way back: "I'm afraid I won't see my old friend again". But, thanks be to God, I revived, and was able to tell a few more of my stories to Beara@rootsweb.com once more.. All the best from Riobard. 3. Hi Riobard, Thank you so very much for all you did for so very many years - for so very many of us around the world! You were so nice to Bill and I when we visited looking for relatives. and we still enjoy listening to your music cd that we got from you when visiting. My husband's sisters (Marita, Peggy, Anne and Mimi) surely enjoyed and appreciated meeting you last year when they were there as well. We will long remember you and Joan, Riobard! Reply-To: beara@rootsweb.com Dear people of Beara@rootsweb. com The time has come to pass on and say goodbye to my Records from Beara which will shortly be housed by the NEHGS, the Genealogical, etc. ---- Riobard, ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BEARA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message .

    3. How delightful that your records are going to be here on these shores, Riobard. From my years of membership in NEHGS, I know them to be an amazing organization. They will keep your work safe! When I'm next in New England, I am going to plan a visit to see the trove. Thank you so much, Riobard, for all you've done for these Harringtons on the east coast of the US. We love you! 3. Riobard a chara uasal, not much to say.....what I already had came to me in that recent poem and the reaction that got speaks for itself concerning the high regard you are rightly held in and the gratitude for your scholarship and effort felt by all with Beara roots.. Words from Padraig Pearse's fine poem 'The Fool' come to mind here and are appropriate.... " I have squandered the splendid years: Lord, if I had the years I would squander them over again, Aye, fling them from me ! For this I have heard in my heart, that a man shall scatter, not hoard, Shall do the deed of to-day, nor take thought of to-morrow's teen, Shall not bargain or huxter with God ; or was it a jest of Christ's And is this my sin before men, to have taken Him at His word? The lawyers have sat in council, the men with the keen, long faces, And said, `This man is a fool,' and others have said, `He blasphemeth;' And the wise have pitied the fool that hath striven to give a life In the world of time and space among the bulks of actual things, To a dream that was dreamed in the heart, and that only the heart could hold. O wise men, riddle me this: what if the dream come true? What if the dream come true? and if millions unborn shall dwell In the house that I shaped in my heart, the noble house of my thought?" What if that dream come true....... indeed yours did mo chara cleithe uasal......the proof of your endeavors are there to show it in those splendid Annals of Beara! Just as Pearse see 'millions unborn' living as free and equal citizens of the Republic that he and his IRB comrades envisioned, so also countless thousands yet unborn will have cause to bless your name as the 'houses that you shaped in your heart' and brought to live again in ' the nobel house of your thought' have already given countless thousands of sons and daughters of Beara scattered world wide, the 'house of their people' back to them. Countless thousands of families' yet unborn' will connect because of you to a proud past and and also because of you walk taller and with more certainty into their own future. Few are privileged to leave behind such a legacy on their way through this 'vale of tears' you are one such person and may God Bless and reward you for it! 3. Dear Riobard, and all here, What can I say that hasn't already been said today? Not much comes to mind. I suppose I can allow that if my aunt Johanna were still alive she'd be awfully proud of the baby boy she helped deliver into the world, and the fine man he grew up to be. I hope that wherever she is, she knows what has come to pass and is smiling down on us today. When the final tally of our lives is made by those who come after, I doubt any of the rest of us will rank as high in esteem as Riobard O'Dwyer. That's not for lack of our accomplishments, but rather for the overwhelming body of work represented by the collection that has gone now to repose in the NEHGS; and for the countless letters and phone calls and visits so many have enjoyed all through the years.
