    3. Hi Donal: Great news that the serious surgery is over and you are feeling ok! Recovery will probably be slow, but not to worry, with the prayers from this group, you will be fit as a fiddle before you know it. Have been down this road myself as the care giver of my husband and he is also good. Recently had a carotid artery cleaned out...much thicker plaque that we knew, but he came through fine and is now back to normal after three weeks....not as serious as yours, but he has had his moments too. Prayers will pull you through like they did my darlin', so take your time to recover and we all look forward to see your name again on a regular routine. God Bless you and your family and do what the doctor tells you and just hang in there and soon all will be well. Best wishes from Boston, Maureen Maloney On 04/24/12, donal O'Siodhachain wrote: Thanks Bill and friends of Beara your prayers and good wishes are most welcome. 1. [BEARA] (A) The Landlord; (B) Headed for Butte.
    2. Riobard O' Dwyer
    3. THE LANDLORD Long ago there lived in a townland in Beara a man named Wardin. He was a Landlord, and the Parish Priest were always disagreeing. Wardin was strict with his tenants. One day he evicted a very poor man off the land on account of not being being able to pay the rent. He would not even let him build a little thatch hut on any part of his property. The Parish Priest gave the poor man permission to build a liitle hut in the Church yard. The Landlord wanted to evict the poor man out of the Church yard, but the Parish Priest would not allow him. The Landlord then wanted to evict the poor man from the Church yard, but the Parish Priest told the Landlord that he had no claim over it. Both of them then were disputing over it. The Parish Priest preached from the altar that he would make an example of the Landlord. He did. Soon after that, the Landlord got sick, and he was made deaf and dumb and crippled. As it is said: "The ways of God grind slowly ---- but surely." The first man in to the new Landlord's small field was the poor man who had previously been evicted. HEADED FOR BUTTE, MONTANA Mike Riney/Rahilly had a disagreement with his neighbour, so he"cleared" to Ardgroom, sold his horse, and headed off to the Copper Mines in Butte, Montana. Eventually Riney got to be Supt. of the mines. Michael Duggan's uncle Johnny became Shift Boss under Mike Riney. Mike Riney had a daughter who married an American, and Mike made him a Shift Boss also. Mike's farm in the western part of Urhan, Eyeries Parish, fell to Mike Shea's people, and later a Dutchman had it. It would be interesting if any of Mike Riney's descendants are still living around the Butte area. ----- Riobard.

    3. Hi Donal, Actually I'm Patrick (using the wife's computer). I suspect the post civil war period of Irish history lead to a small emigration boom. I actually meant the post to be a little humorous. I have old circa 1900 photos of 2 of my dad's greatuncles who were policeman. One was RIC and the other was in the Dublin Municipal Police. I joke that Constable Sullivan in my earlier post could have been a relative also! I'm a history buff but certainly don't sugar coat the past. Everybody has their own story. I once read a book describing how people in various countries were effected by the First World War. The Irish chapter dealt with Irish soldiers serving in the British Army. These men enlisted believing that they were helping Ireland and were devastated by the Easter Rising. I know that sadly they were written out of Irish history until recently. Like I said time should heal all wounds. I enjoy listening to old people tell stories regardless of their background. I know enough to take the political views with a grain of salt. I'm thrilled when I can compare an old story with a written record. There was a photo of a pretty young cousin hanging in the house. I'd often heard the story of how she was murdered in Cork in the 30's. A few years ago I was at a wake and was told there was an account of the trial in a book by a Kenneth Deale describing notorious Irish murder trials. I promptly ordered it through Amazon. Before reading the book I wrote down the version I was told growing up. Both the similiarities and contradictions were interesting. You caught me at an interesting time. My uncle recently passed away and my sister and I are trying to scan a vast amount of old photos. Unfortunately very few are labeled. I have one of yet another gggrandfather taken abound 1900. I know one of his sons went to Australia and had 8 children. In a relatively short period the Irish spread far and wide. I've seen a family tree done by someone I've never met. Just from my maternal grandfather's siblings till now there are cousins throughout the English speaking world. I was really surprised to see my 2 oldest sons listed. I'll stop rambling now. Have a great Easter Donal! Pat Sullivan On 04/06/12, donal O'Siodhachain<dospoet@gmail.com> wrote: Hi Mary : there is one critical issue here........ the narrative of those times! Whoever controls the narrative of the past can distort it to excuse their past actions and sanitize their legacy for acceptance of their legitimacy in contemporary politics. For instance did you know we had hundreds of business taken over by the workers in the 1918/22 period who assumed collective ownership of these business, declared them Soviets and who flew the red flag over them and ran them as communist enterprises? You will not hear too much about that in the poplar official account. Likewise when Herr Hitler was strutting around Germany with his Brownshirts, we had over ten thousand Nazi associated uniformed Irish Blueshirts strutting around Ireland. I have only ever seen and held one genuine Blueshirt tunic. We have had two apologist books on the period where these Fascist admirers politics are played down yet a quick read of the newspapers of thirties period will show that our Irish Fascists were using the same language and had the same views as their continental counterparts. In the early seventies in Cork City Hall at the Leaders speech, in a Fine Gael National Conference, I see some old Blueshirts ( women included) getting carried away and throwing Fascist straight arm salutes and bellowing 'up the Blueshirts' I was there for the speech with my late wife to meet her cousins who were attending, Her father a cousin of Mick Collins was Pro-Treaty and her mother Ant-Treaty! History is seldom clearcut or tidy. The Northern Ireland Conflict Good Friday agreement is less than a decade and a half old, yet Mainstream Republicans control that narrative. Many good sincere Republicans did not agree with the Good Friday Agreement; their voices can be found in various websites, but they are ignored by the mainstream Republican narrative and their voices are marginalized irrespective of how central these dissident figures once were in the mainstream movement. . Likewise back then, if Dev had not constituted these Military Commissions to get the Anti-Treaty side on record, then for future historians the collated and collected Free State accounts would dominate the historical record of these times. Since the I R B were the main instigators of the Easter Rising, my account was from an I R B perspective, that is why I gave the caveat warning and my own background that readers could see that I was articulating a certain perspective. Riobard has had little to say in all of this or I doubt if he will. Those who lived though these momentous times shared a glorious dream that they see become a reality in the First Dail and the birth of a new Republic. Where there is great love and hope, there is also a capacity for great hate when things go wrong. Victor and vanquished Republicans alike were shocked and saddened by the shattering of that dream and children like Riobard took their parents outlook and while prepared to talk about these things among their own extended families and like minded neighbors, they too like their parents before held silence in public so that the hate and hurt of the period could wither and die. 3. Hi Mary : there is one critical issue here........ the narrative of those times! Noble sentiments indeed! Slan is beannacht, Donal O' On 4/6/12, Mary Sullivan <mpdsull@verizon.net> wrote: > > I stumbled accross a booklet "The Boys of the Millstreet Battalion."
