    3. To all Beara people interested in Gaelic football. Tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at 8.30 will be the removal of the body of Jimmy Downing, Urhan, who died unexpectedly at his home. Jim, a big powerful man, was one of the finest high fielders and kicker of a long ball that I ever had the privilige of playing with. We won the Cork County senior football Championship with Beara in 1967, and the Munster senior football Championship in 1968. Jim, a great Clubman, was centrefield for Urhan when they won the County Intermediate Championship, and he also played Minor, Under - 21, and Senior Championship with Cork. Go ndeanfhaidh Dia trocaire ar a anam dilis. ---- Riobard.

    3. Hi Susan and all, a few brief observations on the Scottish prayer, the Gaelic used is Scots Gaelic and this differ from contemporary Irish Gaelic on as much as 'Yankee English' differ from 'Queen's English' Next these prayers were made for and in Gaelic and this prayer to get into the correct 'mind set' for prayer, when properly voweled and chanted, is a mantra that establishes a certain kind of vibration like got nowadays from listening to a beautiful piece of music. If interested, copy and paste side by side, the Gaelic will resonate in the recesses of the mind for those with a bit of Irish in them. take this piece from 'Rune before Prayer' ...... Gaol De, Gradh De, Gair De, Gais De Gras De, Sgath De, Is toil De, Love towards God, The affection of God, The smile of God, The wisdom of God, The grace of God, The fear of God, And the will of God Gaol De,,,, taken out of their cultural context these two simple words immediately loose true meaning. Gaol means kinship and a relationship and the love expressed is that of close family members for each other and all that entails. Fear of God that unfortunately seem to have preoccupied the RC church for much of the past one hundred years is well down the list of attributes! The view of God implicit in this and the approach is like that to a kindly grandparent, fear and will only enter into the equation when there is a breakdown of the first five. If there is enough interest I will do an essay on Celtic Spirituality for Bill in the sister site, it was for things such as this that the page was conceived for! 3. Hi Susan, my thanks to you and again to all. The first thing to appreciate in any studies into this area is that the character of the Celtic Church as displayed by John Scotus in the courts of Charles The Bald and the other such learned greats as Colmcille and Columbanus, up to 1111 ad and the Synod Of Rathbrazil ( when The Celtic Church and over a dozen other churches who had found refuge here) were reconciled with the Continental Roman Church, was in some respects different to the RC religious theological beliefs of our own times. The Druidic system often dismissed as 'pagan' and by implication of no consequences, was a highly evolved philosophical system with a complex developed sense of the Sacral. Colmcille had in fact first trained as a Druid and the relatively rapid and successful Christianization of Ireland owed much to the fact that the Druidic system adopted Christianity to the extent that early Irish texts from the Christian period frequently refer to Jesus as 'The Arch Druid'. For any serious study in these areas if you or any others who do not already know and may be interested, start with Wisdom Books of the Jerusalem bible. this is a reference to a free on line source.... http://www.catholic.org/bible/books_bible.php These in turn are a list of the wisdom books of the above... http://www.cathtruth.com/catholicbible/wisdom.htm ........ and this particular reference also has a good outline explanation of the Wisdom Books. Of these, Solomon's Canticle of Canticles is a good starting point for your area of interest in the Old Testament. For a good Celtic overview Alexander Caramichael's collected works are available and a good starting point for the Celtic mindset and approach to the 'God Force'. Here you will see that the same spirit of the Old Testament Wisdom Books is reflected time and again in Carmichael's collection. Some Celtic Sacral scholars would argue that the Celtic Sacral lore is in fact from a parallel and equally ancient native source rather than Old Testament cross fertilization and influence. http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cg1/ Happy study Susan, I have been delving in these areas for over fifty years and I am still surprised and delighted at what I find and I pray that I always will be. 3. Donal - I, too, have been holding you in my heart in prayer. I am very grateful for all you share with us...enriching my understanding of my roots... Perhaps both you and Bill and others can help me with something I am beginning to research more, but need some help to know where to look... Some years ago I read a prayer that is attributed to the Navajo people (American Indian) that is addressed to Beauty. Then I heard somewhere that an ancient Irish name for God was Beauty. Then I visited the Middle East where I found that the Moslem Rosary recites 99 names of God...or attributes of God. I would very much like to know where to find more about the ancient Irish names for God...or attributes of God. Bill - your reference to "The Dear" reminded me of this... 3. Hi to all Beara friends, good news, very good news in fact, but a heartfelt thanks to all of you who responded here and in private to my em. Your prayers and best wishes were most welcome. I was at peace TG even before my anointing last Sunday and that good feeling has increased and it certainly helped. I took a dramatic exit from my Sauniere Soc English and Scottish friends on last Sunday morning and interrupted a lecture to gave a provisional goodbye to all, leaving some very shocked people behind. Messages and calls have been pouring in from those also in addition to here at home. Again my sincere thanks to one and all. Every test I have had post of have been positive. I came through and recovered much better than expected, the stoma needed to be done as a first step anyway so this done following the emergency, I was in the system and it could have taken three to five months to be where I am now. The CAT scans have shown that the cancer is localized to the one bowel site, and whit this out my system, TG will be cancer free. The 'pump' aspect of the heart too proved better than anticipated by the specialist in the echo tests so in Mid-May the tumor removal after the current recovery was allowed home yesterday afternoon and feeling fine, had a walk to the local shops this evening and now it is a matter of being as well as possible for the next serious op without overdoing it. For those out there over fifty, men especially any who have not had a bowel / stomach internal check should do so, as my story illustrates, blood screenings are not enough. My tumor would have shown up five years earlier in such a test. Once again my sincere thanks to all and it is back to cultural matters on the next post. I learned an awful lot of history from reading your posts!..They showed a 'spirit' the way they were written and i'm sure that same quality will make you well again soon!
