    1. [BEARA] John (Suonish) Sullivan and Abbey (Shearhig) Sullivan family
    2. Page 138 of Allihies bk lists this couple with children Patrick born 1862 and John born 1866. There is no mention of a daughter Ellen. I believe that they are in Huron Mi 1870 census with these two children, plus two more born in Mi in 1867 and 1869. This would indicate that they came to the US in about 1866/67. I believe that Abbey and the two children are listed as arriving in New York on July 3, 1866 aboard the ship Tripoli. The 1870 census also lists Ellen age 12 which would be a birth of abt 1858. The story in my family is that my g grandfather Eugene married a second time after his first wife died and then he died and the second wife sent the children of his first marriage to the US in 1859. Pg 166 of the Allihies book lists a marriage to Abbey Shearhig and the birth of a child Ellen on Oct 1858. I have concluded that after the death of my g grandfather Eugene, Abbey married John Sullivan, and that Ellen was John's stepdaughter and would have been my grandfathers half sister. Is anyone researching the John and Abbey Sullivan family that could verify that Ellen was not John's daughter?

    3. Thanks to Donal for the historical background on tenants' ability to purchase land in Ireland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 2. There is quite a lengthy story about Bridget Sullivan, daughter of Eugene and Sullivan and Margaret Leary, in the article about her in Wikipedia. As you might expect, there is a lot of material about this murder case still in the records in Fall River. If I was going to be in Fall River for a few days, I would try the Fall River room on the second floor of the main public library at 104 N. Main St. to see what they might have about her. 3. Hi Dianna, Bill and all. Just back from a lovely literary festival weekend and catching up! ' Bill..... "..... I am not sure about whether or not she could have bought land in her own name. The period was during the land reforms when tenants were buying land from the landlords......." Some brief historical information: the Windham Land Acts of 1903 began the large scale land purchases, over 16,000 in Munster alone. However the then Irish Nationalist Party and The Land League were very much the purchases as they believed that while the land issue was linked to the National Independence, agitation about the former could be channeled into the latter. The earlier purchases were very much localized events on an estate by estate basis, if Riobard knows who the local estate landlord was, then there may be records of the purchases. However if Bridget came back with enough money to buy a farm, unless she specifically intended to get married and stay or go into farming for herself, the likelihood is that she assisted a member of her family or relatives to purchase and legally own a farm, but the family ( and of course the few bregudgers that had their eye wiped in the transaction ) would have referred to 'Bridgit buying a farm' which she 'de facto' did with her money but 'de jura' her name would not have necessarly appeared in the deed documents of the period. In the sixties my partner's mother was helped by her cousin to buy a large boarding house in Glasgow, the cousin was paid off in full after a couple of years when the business was well established and these 'informal' but never the less very structured arrangements were in place as part of the extended family mutual help and support family experience. Unfortunately for researchers, while such transactions may have been commonplace, very often there are no formal records or indeed any records at all aside from oral family lore. 2. Dianna, How wonderful that you and your sister will be spending time in Fall River, Massachusetts! The people of Massachusetts are friendly, helpful, and down to earth and I'm sure you will make many memories while there... and hopefully, find out more information on Bridget Sullivan. My fingers are crossed! Have a safe and memorable trip! Kathleen~CT. Date: Sun, 20 May 2012 12:20:59 -0600 From: Dianna Porter <porterdianna@hotmail.com> Subject: [BEARA] Bridget Sullivan This is posed to Riobard and anyone else who can answer my questions about Bridget Sullivan. Bridget was the maid in the home of Andrew and Abby Borden who were killed with an axe in Fall River, MA in 1892. Daughter Lizzie Borden was tried for the murders and acquitted in 1893. Bridget eventually came to Montana and married my grandmother's brother, John Sullivan, in 1905 in Anaconda. According to Bridget's obituary in 1948, she lived in Anaconda for 45 years and six years in Butte before her death. That means that she came to Montana about 1897. But there is a gap in information about her whereabouts between 1893 and 1897. Family lore in our family and others here connected to Bridget says that after the trial she returned to Ireland with sufficient money to buy a farm for her parents. If she did return to Ireland for a few years, that raises these questions besides where did she get the money (from Lizzie?): Didn't her parents already own a farm? Riobard's records! seems to indicate that they did have the farm at Billerough. Was a woman in the late 1890s allowed to buy property in her own right? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. My sister and I will be in Fall River next month and staying in Bridget's room at the Lizzie Borden B&B. The question of her whereabouts 1893-1897 doesn't seem to be answered definitively. Thanks, Dianna Porter - Butte, Montana

    3. Oops. Sent the last before writing. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and encouragement thus far. The Bridget Marge found could be our Bridget, if "operative" means domestic. In Butte at the turn of the last century, Sullivan was the most common surname. One source says that in 1908, there were 1200 Sullivans from 77 different families in Cork. And that doesn't count the wives and children. Frequently, a Sullivan married another Sullivan and they were not related. Such was the case with my grandparents and with Bridget and John. As mentioned, Bridget Sullivan was a common name. There were several listed in the Butte city directory in the late 1890s, many were domestics. She was probably a domestic in Anaconda before marrying John as there were two in that directory prior to the marriage and one after. Bridget and John did not have children. Shortly after he died in 1939 in Anaconda, she came to Butte (25 miles away) and lived a few years with a niece. In the end, she died in the county hospital known locally as the "Poor Farm." 2. Household employees are not listed in the city directories. They usually list heads of households, widows, and those employed outside the home. There is only one Bridget Sullivan, a widow listed in 1894. There is this one in 1895: Sullivan Bridget, operative, boards 77 Eight Rod way, along with the listing for the widow. 3. Very interesting family history. In my work, both genealogical and academic, I have found obituaries not to be accurate on details all the time. People tend to round things off or estimate time in a community. You might check the 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses to see just where she was. Are there city directories for Fall River that might help fill in the gap? Worth investigating while you are there. Are you sure she left the Borden's employ after the trial? Hers is a common name--but does she show up on a ship passenger list when she would have returned? I am not sure about whether or not she could have bought land in her own name. The period was during the land reforms when tenants were buying land from the landlords. I assume there would be a record in Dublin. Good luck. 3. Hi Dianna, I found your posting on Bridget very interesting. I have always been interested in Bridget's story and her role with Lizzie Borden. Is Billerough in Allihies parish? I have visited the Borden B& B and it is very interesting. I saw the room that was Bridgets on the top floor. Hope you and your sister have a fun trip to Fall River. 3. Fascinating family history! I've often wondered about possible Beara connections for the Borden's maid because of her last name. I can't contribute to your inquiry but I wish you good luck in finding the answer to your questions. Who knows what you might uncover! Did Bridget and John have any children?
