Lorri : could not but agree with you, this is what I like about writing for the Beara site, the women seem to be so intellegent and perceptive ! See page 23 of the Post also for other activity by Whitehouse poets and newly published book to help in the 'Save The Shannon' campaign. Slan is beannacht, Donal. Friends of Beara : since this is my last ' medical bulletin ' week I thought it a shame to sign off without giving all of you ladies out there of a certain vintage the opportunity to see how good looking I am in real life ! I cannot quite get the ' Our Beara Bill hat look' however, must be something to do with Marine Core 'devil may care' attitude and all the experience with strange women in exotic places that remains on after active service to give that hint of rakish elegance for old vets in hats like himself ? http://www.limerickpost.ie/digital/2012/2012-08-04/ The piece concerning myself and cancer awareness is on page 88, the back page so a click on the double right arrow will take any of you that may be interested directly there. The wonders of the Digital age : I had an electronic copy on my computer before the paper was delivered. For Kerry and Munster readers and I suspect quite a few abroad also some very sad news; the great Con Houlihan of Castleisland passed away this morning. He was one of the finest sports journalists in these Islands but first and always an accomplished essayist of the old school as much at home in Gaelic and Latin or Greek as he was a renowned master of the English language. His polished prose was a thing of joy and if a subject engaged him, he had the rare ability equally have his readers engaged with and engrossed in the same subject. Thanks, Riobard. I would just like to follow up on the music and mention something to readers unfamiliar with [or have a craving for] trad music. Over the next few days, I hope to post various Dwyer & O’Dwyer trad pieces from YouTube onto a Facebook site called Celtic Music Festival—a small group I started about 2 years ago. I’ve just posted a few Finbarr Dwyer reels and would love to turn the site into Ceol na Duibhir ó Bhéarra for a few days. If you are not familiar with the music, this is a chance to see & listen to a few videos of some great great trad music. Regards/ Le gach deá ghuí/ Saludos Terrance O'Dwyer
Thanks Donal....it is always lovely to read such kind words regarding a writer that you admired. She will be missed by many. Dan and friends : as a believing Christian in the Celtic and Western Tradition I will alway have hope while in this world and I believe that I will have these hopes justified when I cross over to Spiritual realms. What I have accepted is that conventional medical treatment has done as much as it can ( see poem). I will now quickly explore unconventional options and I am open to anything that can be undertaken within the 'low risk' type. I did not forgo Chemo and opt for a quality of remaining life just to screw over my system with some other such corrosive treatment. I have had a number of what could be called extremely lucky breaks in the discovery of this cancer so far and as result instead of dying before Christmas I should have half of next year also. I would look on these things as miracles and no reason why there cannot be some more. I am certainly open to any that may be coming my way. Slan is beannacht, Donal O' *Closed File* *( for Professor Gupta )* A slight man with a big presence, Ancestral skin browned by Indian sun, Firmly, yet radiating kindly compassion He quietly did all that had to be done. My mind flew to Con Murphy in Cork Jail, To Mountjoy morning call on Rory, Dick and Joe, When they too were told this terrible finality Death awaited, earth life over, time to go. Hi Terrance, Finbarr, Richie, and Michael are brothers. I am a 1st cousin of theirs. Ellen (or Ella Mae) was my mother. She (R.I.P) used play the fiddle/violin and the concertina. My father (R.I.P), Liam O'Dwyer, used play the accordeon. My sisters Norelene and Maura played the piano. My brother Liam played the piano accordeon and the drums, and my brother Sean plays the concertina. I suppose you could call it all a form of musical madness !! My young granddaughter in Cork, 9 years old Shona O'Dwyer, plays the violin, the flute, and now the piano. She was playing the flute and the violin when she was only 6 years old. ---- Riobard On 31 July 2012 21:02, Terrance O'Dwyer <tsodwyer@verizon.net> wrote: > > Firstly, thank you Riobard for your suggestions. Dear friends of Beara : this is the last 'medical' that I will be posting and from now on it will be 'business as usual' with my condition relegated to the relevant passing, mention. As someone with a public political and cultural profile I was requested to go public to help raise awareness of 'silent killer' bowel cancer and I have done so here as elsewhere. As the situation stands the problem is that while I am organically clear of cancer, my lymphatic system in infected, the cancer is currently confined to this system, it will break out of that confinment and infect elsewhere, probably on a massive scale. The top of the 'bell curve' average survival rate is thirteen months with a two month lead in and the same taper off. My 'count down started in mid-June, so Mid-July next year should be my 'time to go', but it could be as early as May or I may survive to September. As my Islamic friends would say Ishna Allah, as God wills ! My thanks to Bill for allowing this digression and once again, our sincere thanks for all your private and public expressions of prayer, sympathy and support. I am delighted to end 'the medical final' with some good news for a change : Patricia and myself had intended to slip away to Iona, get quietly married over there, throw a surprise party when we got back and make the big announcement. However Fr JJ our Redemptorist friend who has been a pillar of strength and good counsel to us since Good Friday and who is from my home village, is also in poor health and travel would be an ordeal. We decided at noon on last Sat. to have a home wedding in mid-September, as getting married without Fr JJ was unthinkable for all three of us. We had all arranged by late evening ( helps if distant cousins own a hotel!) and on Monday we cut through all the Church and State 'red tape' to make it happen. So on the 15th of Sept after 25 year plus of our own pre-marrige course, the Church were prepared to waive their mandatory one, and we will be getting married. Fr JJ of course having finally ended our 'living in sin' status is in line for some big 'brownie points' with 'The Crowd Upstairs'! Thanking you yet again one and all, slan is beannacht, Donal and Patricia.
Dear Donal: Please don't give up hope, and DO NOT stop seeking help for this condition. Obviously I don't know anything about your condition or prognosis, but amazing things are occurring in medicine. The power of prayer and meditation is well documented, as well as the power of the human spirit. You are in touch with some amazing people in this group, all of whom will undoubtedly keep you in their thoughts and prayers. Above all, the human body responds well to a positive attitude, which I know from your posts that you have an abundance of this ingredient. Exercise will help your other treatments (walking is great), keeping your mind in the present, and thinking positive thoughts are all helpful. But I'm sure you know all this -- I thought I'd try to reinforce the concept. All the best, and feel free to contact me off list if you so desire. Dan Harrington (By the way, I'm not a medical doctor - the DR is a Ph.D, so I'm not trying to give you medical advice, but you will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers) Dan On Wed, Aug 1, 2012 at 3:31 AM, donal O'Siodhachain <dospoet@gmail.com>wrote: > Dear friends of Beara : this is the last 'medical' that I will be posting > and from now on it will be 'business as usual' with my condition relegated > to the relevant passing, mention. Thank you Donal for the article about Maeve Binchey....like many, I loved her books and have each one of them. She will be greatly missed by many. The article was a great tribute to her and worth keeping...as I did. Hope you are adjusting and enjoying you time as best you can. My prayers are still with you and will be. God Speed. Recently, there was an email to Beara@rootsweb.net from Terrance O'Dwyer telling us that his dad was Tim. Terrance was wondering about a Eugene Sullivan, his grandfather. I'm not quite sure if he said that he didn't know where his Eugene was born, but that he thought Eugene was from the Castletown area. You know that, to people searching from America, Sullivan/O'Sullivan from "Castletownbere" (known also as Castletown to Beara people) could really mean Sullivan/O'Sullivan from any part of Beara. Anyhow, I think there was a Eugene/O'Sullivan, known as Owen, born around the end of 1906 who came from fairly near the Church Gate (as it was in the old days) in the eastern end of the town of Castletownbere. He was a brother of Helen who was a Music Teacher in the town. He became a Bank Official, and lived in Dublin. Now, it might be worth following that line. Eugene's (and of course Helen's) mother was Ellen McCarthy. I might be "away out", in what (in my old age) I can remember about this Eugene. Terrance said that his mother was from Butte, Montana; that his maternal grandmother was from Ballycrovane [That, by the way, is a Townland in the Eyeries Parish]. The first step that Timothy should take so, is: to go on from his own Mom's maiden name; and after that to find out the Christian name of her father and the maiden name of her mother; and, then, take it from there. Genealogy if very easy ---- or so they say. Whoever said that should try it out for themselves !!. I'm afraid that they wouldn't get very far. Terrance also said that "if only we had an album of Riobard playing his accordeon". Well, I always said that, before I died, I would get a tape done with my accordeon of Traditional Irish Music called "Traditional Music from the Heart" (by Riobard O'Dwyer). I did ---- and in it are Polkas, Jigs, Reels, Hornpipes, Slow Airs (Laments), Marches, Set Dances, Slides, and Waltzes (the Waltes are composed by myself -- two of the Waltzes are called "Beara my Home", and the "Boston Beara Waltz" ). It is the only tape I ever made, and, like all my years of research, it is now done, and over with. ---- Riobard.
Firstly, thank you Riobard for your suggestions. However, I must mention that I erred with respect to the birthplace of my grandmother, Margaret Powers. She came Cahiravart in the Eyeries area, and the reason for the error relates to my grand aunt Kitty McCarthy, who married Jerry "the weaver" McCarthy. Margaret & Kitty were sisters I believe Jerry hailed from Ballycrovane, but I had reversed the villages where they came from. They settled in New York, and were really my grandparents since New York is 2000+ miles [or, should I say 3000+ km] from either Butte or Castletownbere. There is a bit more to mention, and I will do so later. But, I want to mention Riobard & ceol na Beara. Some ten miles from my house is an old pub/café called “an Beal Bocht.” Every Sunday, there is a seisiún with three very talented musicians, John Redmond [Wxfd] [I believe he won the AI button accordion on four occasions]; Donal Ryan (Tip) playing the Irish banjo; and Shane Sullivan [Klk] on either guitar or percussions of various types. The music is simply fantastic. On Friday’s Kerrywoman Mary Courtney performs---you can see her & John on YouTube. ABB occasionally hosts some well known players, and one evening, Donna & I went to hear the fiddler Kevin Burke. Now, as it turns out, he mentioned the Beara Dwyers as being one of Ireland’s great music families, and I must tell you that this is still another facet of the Beara tradition about which I am woefully ignorant. I’ve picked up music by Finbar and by Richie Dwyer; and, there are a few YouTube pieces featuring Riobard on the accordion. I’ve read about the late Michael O’Dwyer, but have not encountered his music. And, I have seen a few pieces by Ellen O’Dwyer, but know nothing about her. Sunday afternoons have simply whetted the appetite. Regards/ Le gach deá ghuí/ Saludos Terrance O'Dwyer
Hi Donal: Thank you for your time searching and finding the RTE guide. Have now read it twice and am a bit weepy.
