Bill -- Thank you for sharing. The account of the wedding was wonderful and the poem written by Donal himself speaks volumes. My sincere congratulations to the bride and groom on this wondrous occasion. Yet, Donal appeared, as all us men do on this momentous occasion, like a deer in headlights! Again, sincere congratulations to the bride and groom. I am looking for information on my great grandfather,Jeremiah Sullivan, who emigrated from Bearhaven in 1852. His parents were Patrick Sullivan and Mary Ryder Sullivan. He is buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Albany, New York Jeremiah McMahon

Just to continue the Ballykissangel – ooops—Ballycrovane thread, my grandmother was Margaret Power of Cahiravart & Butte. Her younger sister Katie married Jerry (the Weaver) McCarthy from Ballycrovane & New York, NY. Kitty & Jerry had three children: Denis (d. 2004), Kathleen & Jerry. Denis was my Godfather and certainly one of the smartest persons I have ever met. Until recently, I did not know of ‘the Weaver’ name, nor where they came from [somewhere in th Beara]. And as my Dad would say, there you have it Regards/ Le gach deá ghuí/ Saludos Terrance O'Dwyer
Denny "the Weaver" McCarthy of Ballycrovane was known as such because he was a weaver.. He and his wife had a big family of 12. About half of them went to Butte, Montana; two married in the home area; and the others went to New York. Weaving was a well-known industry in Beara in the olden days. I remember two old people in the industry in those days: Michael "the Weaver" and his wife known as Jude "the Weaver" who lived where the Ardgroom Post Office is now. ---- Riobard.
Maggie, That is near St. Ignatius Loyola where my grandparents were married! You have prompted me to contact them for a copy of the marriage record. One way to resolve whether this is two different people, might be to look at the original document that is available on the sites below. In this case there is a tenant house on each of these properties. One at 0.4.0 and one at O.5.0. I doubt that a poor tenant famer could manage/afford two houses ?? But, again, I would defer to Riobard's opinion on this. Ballycrovane and Faunkill are not two towns ---- they are townlands in the Parish of Eyeries which is in the Beara Peninsula. Anything is possible ---- answer to question two. Yes, Faunkill still exists ---- and so does Ballycrovane. ---- Riobard. And that brings up an interesting question about Griffiths, how do you know if there was more than one person with the same name or if they owned multiple properties. In my case, there are multiple Jeremiah Murphys listed. One is in Kilmacowan and the other is in Eyeries. Now fortunately, I know that the family farm was in Kilmacowan and there is a story about him having the Post Office and school and I don't know how accurately those stories are. Riobard's book are a lifeline for trying to figure it all out, but I still have some questions. Thank you for the responses so far! I have been following "Denny the Weaver" McCarthy. Riobard had taken me to their property back in 2001. I thought they lived in Ballycrovane. But now think it might have been Faunkill. Looking at the Griffiths, there are 2 Dennis McCarthy's - one in Ballycrovane and one in Faunkill I am trying to figure out which one to follow. So I am a little confused. (as always!) Cathy
These are geographical locations and, consequently, they most certainly still exist. Both are parts of Eyeries. The whole area is a pretty small area so they are VERY close together. You can probably walk from one to the other in under 10 minutes. No car needed. In American terms townlands are like a couple of blocks within a neighborhood. They are not large areas. Even Eyeries isn't a town in the American sense. To give you a sense of the geographic size I will give my own location within Manhattan (New York City) as a comparison. My "county" is Manhattan, my "town" is the Upper East Side, my "parish" is Yorkville (area within the Upper East Side) and my "townland" is the block I live on (East 82nd between First and Second Avenues). Hope that helps a bit.
