"Big Patrick" Harrington, a Businessman in Castletownbere many years ago, was a bit of a "character" who loved playing tricks on people. This particular day, a woman from Bere Island met him in the town. She wanted a dozen eggs to give to a neighbouring woman in the island who wanted them to put under a hatching hen. Before she arrived back from shopping up the town, "Big Patrick", for "devilment", had boiled the eggs in a pot, parcelled them up, and gave them to the woman to give to her neighbour in the island to put under the hatching hen !!. I assure you that no matter how long the hatching hen spent trying to hatch the eggs, no chickens arrived from under the hen. One time, "Big Patrick" got the job of putting dead bodies into the coffins over beside the Castletownbere Hospital. A particular evening, he was putting a man's body into a coffin. He then placed an umbrella on top of the body. Just then a Nun happened to be passing by. When she saw "Big Patrick", she said in a shocked voice: "Good God, Patrick, why are you putting an umbrella over the poor man's body in the coffin ?". "Well, Sister", said "Big Patrick": "It could be raining on the Other Side when he arrives" !!. I forget whether or not I have told people about the time "Big Patrick's" wife have birth to twins. On the morning of the Baptism, "Big Patrick" walked up the isle of the Church with the two children. After the Baptismal ceremony had concluded, "Big Patrick" handed the Priest a brown envelope with a donation of money. When "Big Patrick" was about half-way down the isle with the twins, the Priest opened the envelope, and found there was a donation for only one child. "Come back here to me, Patrick", said the Priest. "Didn't I Baptise two children ? You paid me for only one". "That's right, Father", said "Big Patrick". Two arrived ----- but there was only ONE ordered ----- and I'm only paying for what I ordered !!". ------ Riobard.
Thank you Riobard for a few good laughs. The list has been so quiet lately . I am one of the newer members of this group. In one of my first postings, I mentioned that I had seen a few of Donal readings on YouTube, that he was a man you don't meet every day, Donal responded with a very interesting story. I’ve tried to put snippets of that story into a paraphrasing of an old ballad, Jock Stewart, the refrain of which is ‘a man you don't meet every day.’ [If you do not know the song, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m3MLEnAEUk ] This is simply my attempt at a tribute. Donal O'Siodhachain Donal O'Siodhachain, a Republican man What an activist and poet he’s been Twasn’t easy or free to love his country, But he was a man you don't meet every day. He had stories to tell of the state and the hell It had forced the poor to pay. For once there was a time, When it seemed like a crime To air grievances at all Twasn’t easy or free to love his country, But he was a man you don't meet every day. One day did he report some abusers to court But the judge would pay him no mind And our story unfolds as Harry Whelan is told The chief of Court will he be Twasn’t easy or free to love his country, But he was a man you don't meet every day. So off did Donal go with reporters in tow Aired them this travesty And as Harry stepped down said he with a frown Your life will be a misery’ Twasn’t easy or free to love his country, But he was a man you don't meet every day. To his home Garda came to drive him insane, But they, they did not succeed. So Dún na nGall he went And six months he spent Uncovering another fraud Twasn’t easy or free to love his country, But he was a man you don't meet every day. For the State twas bent On crushing dissent, Dismembering the IRA. False bombs they did plant To find and then rant Their lies, they would not stop. Des Morris, when heard Of Gardai deed and word, deemed Fitz to be gravely at fault. Twasn’t easy or free to love his country, But he was a man you don't meet every day. Now Donal is gone; may memory live on For he was a man you don't meet every day. -----Original Message----- From: beara-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 11:27 AM To: beara@rootsweb.com Subject: BEARA Digest, Vol 7, Issue 204 Today's Topics: 1. It seems the lamp that burns brightest sometimes goes dark all too soon. ----- Begin Forwarded Message ----- Dear friends, I have to tell you the sad news that Donal passed away at 7 pm yesterday evening. He had a peaceful death and was anointed just minutes before he died, in my arms. The funeral arrangements are as follows: he will repose at the mortuary in Milford Hospice, Limerick, from 5.30 ? 7 pm today (Wednesday) to allow his many Limerick friends to pay their respects. Then he will be transferred to our home at Carraganes, Ballydesmond, Co. Cork (Sliabh Luachra) to be waked. He will leave there on Friday and be taken to the church at Kiskeam, Co. Cork for 2 pm funeral mass. Burial in the nearby cemetery immediately afterwards. Family flowers only please. Donations in lieu, if wished, to Milford Hospice, Limerick. May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your prayers and good wishes throughout the past few months. You have no idea how much they helped us and sustained us. Patricia. ----- End forwarded message ----- A sad loss indeed. For Pat, just weeks after her wedding, and for the many who knew and loved Donal. For us, his friends in this community, and for God alone knows how many others. I'm reminded of these words I've often heard sung by the late Liam Clancy at the end of an evening of music: "And since it falls Unto my lot That I should rise And you should not... I'll gently rise And softly call Good night And joy be with you all." -- Bill Dear friends, I have to tell you the sad news that Donal passed away at 7 pm yesterday evening. Dear Family and Friends of Donal, I hold you in my heart with gratitude for the man whose loss has seemed to come so much sooner than expected. It is only this past summer that I feel I "met" Donal...via this Beara mail list. His response to my questions about Celtic Spirituality revealed to me someone who felt very much like a "kindred spirit". During the month of July especially, just as he was receiving news about his illness, he sent numerous emails to me about Celtic Sacral Lore and information about my Twomey ancestral line of poets...answering questions and providing insight into things I have been searching for and wondering about for most of my life...and so we "met" for just a brief moment...a wealth of wisdom and insight into a way of life and approach to the Mysteries that seem to be at the root of the Celtic soul. I am so very grateful to have "met" Donal in this way, if only for a little time. He has been a blessing to us all...and will continue to be so, I am sure. I have a sense that his was a life well-lived. And so there is now a deep sense of loss...and gratitude.
