    1. [BEARA] Michael and Honora (Hannah) O'Sullivan Lynch Family
    2. Mike Saunders
    3. In response to Riobard's plea to get things rolling again on the Beara list I am posting what I know of my Lynch family family from Kilkatherine, Eyeries parish. I will post more information later about known family members from Beara. My great great grandparents were Michael (b. ca 1809 d. 22 Sep 1871 Iowa Co., WI) and Honora (Hannah) O'Sullivan (b. ca 1819 d.20 FXeb 1875 Iowa Co., WI) Lynch from Kilcatherine Eyeries Parish in Beara. They married on 31 Jan 1833 in the then newly-built Eyeries Village Church, which Riobard told me is the top part of the present church. They were married by Fr. Morty O'Sullivan PP and the witnesses were Eugene Sullivan and Johanna Sullivan. Michael and Hannah had six children while residing in Eyeries Parish. They are: Mary Lynch Gilbert b. 15 May 1836 d. 2 Jul 1918 Arena, WI; Timothy b. 28 Aug 1837 d. 6 Nov 1924 Ridgeway, WI; Margaret Lynch Tobin b. abt Sep 1841 d. 22 May 1930 Dodgeville, WI; Julia Lynch Sullivan b. abt Dec 1844; Matthew b. 17 Mar 1845 d. 19 Apr 1933 Mt. Horeb, WI; and my great grandfather, Michael M. Lynch b. 25 Oct 1851 d. 13 Feb 1908 Darlington, WI (Michael's DOB is probably incorrect. One record shows he was baptized 30 Jun 1884 and another 1 Jan 1850.) Sadly, the church records for Eyeries parish for this entire period were lost in a church fire. Consequently, the DOBs are taken from U. S. obituary and census records. No additional information could be found on the Lynch family in the Annals of Beara, Vol. II, covering Bere Island and Eyeries Parishes. The Lynch family immigrated to the U.S. ca 1852-1853, settling initially ca 1854 in Blue Mounds, WI. They had another five children born in WI. They are: Catherine b. 1854 d. 18 Jun 1856 Iowa Co., WI; Ellen Lynch Flanagan b. 1855 d. 7 Dec 1905 WI;Hannah M. Lynch Moran b. 1857 WI d. 13 Aug 1952 Seattle, WA; John b.abt 1862 WI; and Katherine E. Lynch Troeger b. abt 1865 WI d. 6 Nov 1937 Los Angeles, CA. Mike Saunders

    3. Hope there will be some info about life on Dursey Island also. I recently found a letter in an old trunk written by my own mother that lamented the fact that her mother shared so little about her experiences before she emigrated. Thanks, Bill and Riobard! I'm sure that will be quite enjoyable, and of much greater interest to our Beara community than me telling stories of my boyhood in Detroit. Even though I was in my grandmother's home, surrounded by mementos of her family back in Beara, I just don't think it's quite the thing. (Although if memory doesn't fail me, Riobard was also born in Detroit, once upon a time.) Now, having just seen Riobard's follow-up note, I hope all goes well with the x-rays tomorrow and that Joan is entirely unhurt. Ankles can be funny things. -- Bill

    2. Hello Riobard and the Beara writers, I suspect it is just the after Christmas lull that has fewer people writing to the list. I know that is my problem; the decorations have still not come down, lots of other events to get back into, along with a few medical appointments. The flu is very rampant throughout the U.S. and many folks are down for the count with it. I doubt any of us will let the List fall by the wayside, though. It was good to see your name again on the list, Riobard, and I personally wish the best in 2013 to you and Joan. 1. [BEARA] More Lowney info
    2. Have a copy of the marriage record of my great uncle Mortimer Sullivan and Mary Lowney on June 15, 1865 in New Bedford Ma. Actually says Mertemor Sullivan and Mary Louney. Her parents listed as Cornelius Louney and Mary --------. She is listed as age 25 on the Houghton Co Michigan 1870 census. This would mean a birth date of 1845. She was 38 according to the 1880 census. or a birth date of 1842. On page 192 of Riobard's Allihies book there is a Cornelius Lowney and Mary O'Shea with children Catherine Nov 1837, Mary July 1840 and Peter June 1843. I am not actively doing research on this name, simply adding to the Lowney archives. Teresa Sullivan

    2. Bill Gawne
    3. Dear friends of Beara, As some of you already know, Beara lost one of its great chroniclers just before Christmas. Here's the text of a piece in the current Southern Star. http://www.southernstar.ie/Community/Beara/Regretted-death-of-The-Southern-Stars-Beara-correspondent-03012013.htm --- Begin cited text --- By Con Downing The death has taken place, in his 96th year, of The Southern Star?s long-serving Beara Notes writer, Gerard Harrington. Better known as Gerdie, he was one of the most senior newspaper correspondents in this country, perhaps indeed worldwide. He had been the local correspondent of The Southern Star for almost three decades since his return to his native town of Castletownbere, after spending most of his working life in England before that. --- End cited text --- (Much more at the link) To all who knew him, I offer my condolences. I can only imagine what a loss this must be for the Beara Historical Society. -- Bill
