Hi all I got a blank email too. I was on the Sheepshead on Friday evening and Saturday but was unable to make my planned visit to Beara. Hopefully I can manage it shortly. Hi Riobard, all, I saw the same note, and my guess is Bernie just hit the send button on his phone early. A lot of people do that when they're first learning how to use a touch screen phone. My guess is that there's no ill intent behind Bernie's message. Just a case of "fat fingers" as we engineers call it. Ed, What wonderful information. Is that information only available in person or can I write or phone the Massachusetts Archives? Thank you so much for your hard work. Quin Shea For those of you with Beara roots whose ancestors came to live in Fall River, Massachusetts, I say you have plenty of company. I spent a day at the Massachusetts archives in Boston last week and discovered a trove of Beara men. The archive has microfilmed the naturalization applications for the latter part of the 1800’s. The applications were only from men. The applicants listed their birthday, current address, day and place they came to the US, their age and the age they were when they immigrated. I spent a day going through the first films available from the 2nd District Court of Fall River. I covered only the years 1886 to 1890. The results were astounding to me. Although I did not keep track of the total number of applications I looked at during these four years I found 30 individuals who claimed the Beara as home. They noted their homes as Bearahaven, Bar Haven, Bear Haven, Castletownbere, Airies Cork, and many other variations, but from the Beara in any case. I did keep track of the number of some surnames in total and found for instance that 88% of the Sullivan applicants for those 4 years (17 total) were from the Beara. 80% (5 total) of all the Harringtons were from the Beara. All of the Leary’s (4) and all of the Shays/Sheas (4). There was also a Sheehan, Toomey and a Foley from the Beara. If you consider the percentages of surnames etc in the naturalization records represent a good sampling of the families in the city at this time, you have many Beara familes there. There were 574 Sullivans listed in the 1890 Fall River City Directory. We can estimate 505 of them were from the Beara. Harringtons, Sheas, Learys, Murphys, Toomey and more area living side by side in these old records, working in this center of the industrial revolution in textile manufacturing. I have been working with the census and immigration manifests to assemble these family groups. Next step will be to match them to their homes using Riobard’s work. Although tedious, with the records now available you can project that someday we will be able to make many connections from this popular center of 1800’s employment in Massachusetts back to the Beara in Ireland. As previously posted, legislation was enacted in 2014 authorizing Irish records of historic births (over 100 years), marriages (over 75 years), and deaths (over 50 years) to be published online. However, when the indexes were made available last July by the General Register Office, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner removed the database as it included information on living people. The website, http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/, run by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht (Department) this week restored access to the historical recordsbirths more than 100 years, marriages more than 75 years and deaths more than 25 years. The government insisted no laws were broken as all indexes can be viewed offline at the General Register Offices (GRO) research room. A revised memo of understanding was signed between the GRO and the Department. Mary - I've come across an Annie (Anna) Sheehan who was the daughter of William and Bridget Sheehan. She was on a ship manifest in May 1904 with her sister Mary and cousin David going to Fall River. Although her Mom and 3 of her siblings (Patrick, Mary and Michael) went to the US first in 1894 to Fall River. According to the ship manifest in 1904 she was 22 at the time. Barbara - thanks for the info, quite a few years ago I contacted Riobard and got info about Denis Sheehan, his wife Mary Downing and their descendants including my great grandmother Georgina Sheehan. In my recent research I found a John Patrick Sheehan, born Jan 3, 1894 and arrived in the US in 1915 and was joining his cousins (children of Patrick Sheehan (son of Denis Sheehan and Mary Downing) and Julia O'Sullivan Sheehan. Just home after Beara defeated the Cork City Divisional team Seandun by four goals in the first round of the Cork County Senior GAA Football Championship. It was the greatest display given by a Beara team in years. It would lift your heart. Riobard.
Hello Nancy Do you have a Mary Sheehan as a daughter of Denis Sheehan and Mary Downing? I have DNA matches with the Downing and Sheehan families from Beara. However, my Mary Sheehan was at Liosrobin, Newmarket (probably working) and she married Florence McGillicuddy in Boherbue in 1839. I am beginning to believe that the story I got regarding Mary Sheehan's birthplace was garbled in three generations of telling. Florence and Mary had a daughter named Maria McGillicuddy who was born in Cork City, and she was my great grandmother. Have you tested your autosomal DNA with 23andme or with Ancestry or FTDNA?
