I found a Baptismal record for an ancestor of mine in Kerry, a daughter named Jude - who was baptized about that time...evidently a common girl's name at the time. Hi. Barbara, It's not easy to find. Search the RTE website for it. I bought a copy from them several years ago. Paid a pretty penny too. The other day I was telling you about my visit to Butte [the time I was out there to help in the making of the film "From Beara to Butte", and in which I did the commentary as well ----- which was based on my research into the emigration of the Miners from Beara in the Allihies Copper Mines to the Mines in Butte, Montana]. Among the people I mentioned who helped in the making of the Film was Fr. Sars(field) O'Sullivan. His father was the well-known there, Sean "Irish" O'Sullivan, who had emigrated to Butte from Inisfernard, a little Island just off the Point of Kilcatherine, and across Coulagh Bay from Eyeries, here in Beara. Sean "Irish" was a native Gaelic/Irish speaker like everybody on the Island. Well. anyhow, Sean was a particulary good friend of the then President of Ireland, Eamonn De Valera, who at one time visited Butte, and after whom Sean called one his sons, Eamonn, who was later Fr. Eamonn O'Sullivan. Knowing of the hatred that a fairly old farmer here, Patsy Kelly, had for De Valera, another local farmer, for "devilment", let on to be praising Dev. "Do you know that De Valera was a very holy man", says he, "and that De Valera used receive Holy Communion every morning". With hatred of Dev in his eyes, and fire on his tongue, Patsy Kelly "blasted out": "Huh" says he ----- and the fellow who gave the Communion to him was worse" !! Riobard. Riobard, My father-in-law's sainted father was a Cavan man. After hearing Mr. McGinn's stories, I'm inclined to agree with Patsy Kelly! Yet another most excellent and delightful story! Always so impressed at Riobard's and Joan's kindness to visitors over these many years!! I was so fortunate myself to meet you in person, discuss the pronunciation of "Caobach" and get to hear a mini-concert! But he was born in Feb of 1880, much later than the man Eleanor is looking for. So I think our best lead is this church record that Mike Saunders found. I hope we've been some help to you, Eleanor, with your search. I greeted them, as all good and friendly Beara people do to visitors, and it turned out that they were from Butte. Montana, and that they were looking for a fellow by the name of Riobard O'Dwyer, who, it was said, was supposed to know everything that a person should know about Beara ancestry. When they found out that the person they had heard about was standing there by their side, they were delighted that I could tell them where O'Shea's was. Of course, the "Yank" came into our conversation. And I told them about the night we were in John " the Yank's" apartment in Butte with Tom Mulcahy and the "Yank". John, who must have been around 90 at the time, was playing his single-row button accordeon, and I was playing my own accordeon to join in. "Saint Joan" my wife, was there as well. We conversed about the copper miners who came from Beara to Butte, and about the people we met in Butte (who have a special place in my heart still). To make the Butte visitors so welcome, as they deserved to be, I took out my faithful accordeon and played for them some Irish traditional music, as well as a tape I had made at home on the kitched sideboard, playing the organ and singing with it one of my favourite songs: "Oh Danny Boy". Hello Eleanor, As you probably know, Harrington is the second most common surname found on the Beara peninsula. If you can provide us with your ancestor's given name, and if possible the names of his parents, siblings, and children, that could help us to narrow down the possibilities. Part of the Beara peninsula falls within county Kerry, so you might be on the right track asking here. Also, if you happen to remember the names of any places that he spoke of when he was reminiscing about home, that could help. Does anyone have a connection to Valentia Island Sullivans? I have Patrick and Mary (Shea) Sullivan married c. 1860 Children: * Eugene, ?25 Dec 1862? This is the date the family used to celebrate his birthday. * Barry and Timothy, b. before civil registration? - no civil or church records found yet * Michael, 8 Dec 1866 * Patrick, 5 Feb 1869 * Mary J., 25 May 1871 (my grandmother) * John, 3 May 1874 * Daniel, 14 Nov 1879 * Dennis, 10 June 1885 Eugene and Mary immigrated to Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. They had relatives in Norwich, CT also, but as far as we know the rest of the family stayed in Ireland. I would sure like to make contact with a descendant of one of the brothers who can tell me more about this family and what happened to them.
