Quite a number had gone to Butte, Montana. But, when I got to his mother, he almost broke down with emotion. She is still alive, but is now aging. He told me of how much my research would mean to her, and he must have shaken my hand about six times. When he was leaving, he shook it twice more, and left the driving to the other person who was with him, as he said he was too emotional to drive to the airport. This is the sort of happiness and appreciation that makes one battle on. Hello to all, This weekend I attended the ICONS festival in Canton MA with my grandson - he enjoyed it for the carnival rides, I the music and the Irish wolf hounds. The festival is at the Irish Cultural Centre of New England, a beautiful spot just south of Boston. well attended and always a good time. Before we left there on Saturday, we stopped in at the Irish Tea House for a spot of tea and some brown bread. Finding no empty tables we asked a white-haired gentleman sitting alone if we could share his table with him. We spoke a bit about our Irish roots and while he never told me his name he did mention he was born in Waterville Kerry and lived for a time in Castletownbere. He certainly knew Riobard and his brothers, mentioning Riobard's brother Richie whom he described as a fine singer. I told him of Riobard's great help in finding my Beara roots, and he mentioned that he plays Irish music online including Richard Riobard's. I looked up his website - www.soundoferin.com - today and discovered - much to my delight - that he was none other than John Curran who is the founder of the Irish Cultural Centre! What a nice, unassuming gentleman! The ICONS festival has a tent devoted to genealogy = it was familiar ground - I feel triple blessed for this list serve, especially for all the folks sharing information and doubly for our own Riobard O'Dwyer - without you, Riobard, I would have never been able to fill in my family's Irish branches. I learned a version different in several ways from the words provided by Danny Harrington on 12 September, words I learned as a poem, not as a song: 'Twas one night in last October when I was far from sober and holding up a jag with manly pride when my knees began to flutter and I fell down in the gutter and a pig came and lay down by my side .... (missing words).... .... a passerby was heard to say "you can tell the one that boozes by the company he chooses" and the pig got up and slowly walked away. Sorry about the forgotten words but I learned this some sixty or so years ago. In the same book was the poem about "A Chilly Day for Willy". Jack Harrington
Thanks to Dan Harrington for providing us with that poem "'Twas a pig fair in September, a day I well remember ", etc. Several people had being looking for it for years, but could get only bits and scraps of it. On his recent visit from the States to us, Dan promised he would send us the whole lot on his return. Thanks again, Dan. Laurie, Joseph is listed the 1912 Billerica city directory at the Pollard St address (same as the 1910 census), but then Catherine appears in Lowell in 1913 listed as a widow. So that gives you a time frame for death. I would suggest emailing the town clerk of Billerica to see if they have a record. If not, then try the city clerk in Lowell. It cost a few dollars to get a copy of the record, but they should be able to provide you the information via email. You can find Catherine and family in 1920 by searching for Sullivan, not Battersby. They were living on Newhall St., which matches up with a 1922 Lowell directory listing for Catherine Battersby. (And the census indicates that she was born in MA, so you have to take Census records as useful but not always fully ccurate.) I'll connect with you off-list over the weekend. I can get you some additional info from NEHGS which might help you a bit.
