Another one from my great friend in the States:- A man suffered a serious heart attack, and had an open heart bypass surgery. He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at a Catholic Hospital. As he was recovering, a nun asked him questions regarding how he was going to pay for his treatment. She asked if he had health insurance. He replied "No, Sister, I have no health insurance". The nun asked if he had money in the bank, to which he replied "No money in the bank". The nun then asked "Do you have any relative who could help you ?" He replied "I only have a spinster sister who is a nun". The nun became agitated, and announced loudly: "Nuns are not spinsters ! Nuns are married to God". "Well, in that case so, sister", the patient replied, "you can send the bill to my brother-in-law !!". ----- Riobard. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. Dear Catherine, There were Driscolls/O'Driscolls all over the Beara Peninsula by the 1820s, but this John you mention would have been born before marriage records began here. I would be inclined to feel that he was originally from around the Baltimore area where people were involved very much in the sea trade, and where the family name was very popular. Hi Bill, Hope your T-Day was splendid. Here is an 'article' my sister-in-law transcribed from papers my father-in-law provided for a school project. I believe it was a newspaper cutout, but haven't been able to confirm, but the by-line showed Patrick Cahill, Detroit Correspondent. Titled: "Burial of Irish Patriot at Monroe, Michigan, here is the text: "With the passing of the late Captain Sean O'Sullivan, Executive Officer of the Irish Rifle Association, at Monroe, Michigan on sunday April 26, 1936, Ireland has lost one of its truest Patriots. Sean fought in the Irish Republican Army in the 1916 Easter Week Rebellion under Commandant E. Daly in the Four Courts. When taken prisoner, he was interned at Stafford and Frangock [Frongoch, Wales, known as the University of Revolution] prison. After months of prison torture, he was released from Frangock broken in health. He was refused reappointment to his old position in Dublin, owing to him refusing to sign an order swearing his allegiance to the British Empire. Sean, seeing that there was no chance of him making even an existence in Dublin, he went to Limrick and became connected to the 2nd Battalion, Mid-Limerick Brigade, he was later transferred to the Cork First Brigade with which he remained until after the "cease fire order". Because of the economic conditions brought about by the forcing of the Free State on the Irish people, and becase Sean's republican ideals conflicted with the British imposed Free State laws, he migrated to the United States to make this the country of his adoption. His funeral took place on Thursday, April 30, burial at Monroe, Michigan. The last salute was fired over his grave by a firing party of his former comrades in the IRA, composed of: Thomas Hanlon, Sean O'Brian, Jerry O'Toole, Lee Middleditch, James O'Sullivan, and Joseph O'Sullivan, under the command of Lieutentant Thomas Spillane, formerly of the Cork 2nd Brigade, IRA. The firing party marched with arms reversed behind the casket for a mile and a half, from the church to the burial place. This showed the esteem that his former comrades held for the late Capt. O'Sullivan as this honor is extended to only truly great Irishmen in the United States. It is the intention of his former comrades of the IRA at a later date to ship his body back to his Motherland, the land he suffered so much to try to make it a better place for Irishmen to live in. The example of the late Capt. Sean O'Sullivan will always remain with us a guiding light for the future generations of Irishmen to follow, and harken to the voice of the late Patrick Pearse at the grave of O'Donovan Roasa: "Ireland unfree shall never be at peace." The late Captain O'Sullivan is survived by his wife and five children, and his parents, who reside at Berehaven CO. Cork, Ireland" -----Original Message----- From: beara-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:beara-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bill Gawne Sent: Saturday, November 29, 2008 1:49 PM To: beara@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BEARA] Happy Thanksgiving Day. On Oct. 25, 2008 a message was posted by Riobard showing they above mentioned marriages. I was wondering what time period these covered. My line of interest is in the O'Driscoll or Driscolls This is my husband's maternal line. Driscolls of PEI, Canada. The earliest mention we find is John Driscoll dying in 1832 by falling off a ships mast while the ship was harboured in the Hillsborough River in Charlottetown. No earlier mention of him or his family prior to that. My husaband had a cousin who was a Professor of History at UPEI, Fred Driscoll who was doing research, and he only got as far as saying they were from the Baltimore area of Cork, never verified. It was like a stork dropped him onto PEI. Cannot find any reference to him emigrating. Thought maybe he was part of the Peterborough crowd of 1823, but unable to prove. There was an inquest into to his death by the court system, am in the process of writing to the courts in PEI to try and obtain the full record, maybe showing his place of origin or immigration and if they mentioned which children came from Ireland with him and his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown). Although according to the 1841 (childrens names not listd only age brackets) and how many came from Ireland. It state one male child under 16 and 3 females 16-45, and 2 females under age 16. I do not know John Sr.'s place of birth guestimating from the death record of 1832 that he was born around 1797. Would anyone know of any other ships from Cork to Canada around 1819 though 1830 that would actually give a list of passengers and maybe their place of origin. Any help apprecited. And a fine happy Thanksgiving Day to you too Riobard, and to all here in the Beara mailing list, wherever you are, whether you celebrate the holiday today or not. I was just sitting in the living room reminiscing with my mother about the old Irish men and women we both knew in other years. My great aunt Johanna Ware, a name I'm sure Riobard recognizes, and the many Thanksgiving dinners we had at her home along with her husband Charlie Ware and all my mother's cousins. The older generation, Johanna and her sisters (including my mother's mother Catherine Ryan nee Lowney) had all come over from Beara and made new lives for themselves in the Detroit area. Good times. Good memories. May you all be blessed with good memories today and for many years to come. -- Bill

Hi John: Like to echo Mary Ellen's reply. There are definitely Harringtons in Bantry area. You might try to see if you can access some of the tithe listings online. There was some material put up on the web a few years ago about Bantry. I downloaded the pages, and bookmarked them---but for some strange reason they were subsequently removed. I'm looking for Sullivan, Connor , Hurley/Healy. The Sullivans might be Sullivan Hurrig or Sullivan Ukerrie, I'm not sure which. The townlands I'm specifically interested in are called Reendisert, Ballylickey, Dromkeal, and Barnagearagh, all north of Bantry on the road to Glengarriff. If you find yourself interested in that neck of the woods, email me directly at hjmcs@optonline.net. I'd be happy to share what I've learned. Mary Thank you very much. I will give this a try. Do you know, is this the records for all of the Bantry Parish or just this particular Church? Again thank you for the information. Hi John, I'm also looking for ancestors in the Bantry area but have stayed with the Beara list because I enjoy reading Riobard's items and the material others contribute. I found baptismal and marriage records at St. Finbarr's Roman Catholic Church. The sacristan there is Mary Burke. The record book is kept in the sacristry amid the cleaning supplies! Mary has indicated that she has little time to look up records but a small contribution may provide more of an incentive. Good luck with your search...Mary Ellen> Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2008 15:21:45 -0500> From: john.steitz@gmail.com> To: BEARA@rootsweb.com> Subject: [BEARA] Buckley> > I have followed this list for a year now simply because so many in Wales> were from this area and I wanted to learn what was going on beyond the> obvious that would send folk to the mines and ironworks of that area.
