My understanding is that the candle in the window was to show a welcome to any traveller on Christmas night. It may also have become symbolic of keeping the Catholic faith alive during the time of the Penal Laws. My dad once told me that this symbol of welcome was put to the test when he, his brothers and sisters were at home with their mother, Julia Sullivan - by then a widow of the late Quinlan Sullivan. It was late on Christmas eve, everyone was inside the house, in quite a remote spot in Kilcatherine, when there was a loud knocking on the door. "Who's there?" asked my Grandmother "A traveller" came the reply. "Go away" (or something less polite) was here reply. I still keep a candle lighted in our front room window in England through Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but the story is a useful reminder that we usually honour these traditions until they actually challenge our behaviour. To be fair, she was a widow, was possibly a frightened and perhaps recognised the voice, knew the man had been to the pub etc. Most of us would probably do the same. I've asked around and none of my many cousins remembers hearing this story about our grandmother but, to me, it has the ring of truth. we have a wreath handed down from my grandmother it is not the orginalwreath that was replaced every year but the red center candle and dish is from her we light it on christmas eve Christmas in Ireland stretches from Christmas Eve to the Epiphany feast on '6th of January'. Epiphany is also known as 'Little Christmas' here. For Irish people, Christmas is much more a religious festival than the tome to have fun. People place lighted red candles on their windowsills that are mostly decorated with sprigs of holly so that Mary and Joseph looking for shelter may find the way to their homes. Irish wives bake a seed cake for each person in the household and make three puddings for Christmas day, New Year's Day and the Twelfth Night. On Christmas Eve, the door is left open for Mary and Joseph and bread and milk are left out for them. It is also considered as a symbol of hospitality. On 26th of December or St Stephen's Day, people indulge in football matches and conduct meetings. Children participate in the Wren Boys Procession, in which boys go from home to home carrying a fake wren on a stick, singing carols and playing musical instruments like violins, accordions, harmonicas and horns. They collect money 'for the starving wren', that of course they spend on themselves. Irish children put out sacks to receive presents from Santa rather than stockings and leave mince pies and a bottle of Guinness for him with the sack. I wonder if the candle in the wreath might be an echo of the Advent wreath. The Advent wteath has four candles in the wreath and one in the middle. The one in the middle is usually white as a symbol of Christ. A warm and Merry Holiday season to you, Joan and the rest of the Beara list. I was to go to Florida on Monday but I have a sick pet that needs to have sub-cutaneous fluids every day so I am cancelling. I just hope the airlines will, for a fee of course, let me change the ticket or if I will have to lose the ticket and all I spent. Should anyone have an idea of how to handle that let me know. ~~C Sullivan --- On Sat, 12/13/08, Riobard O'Dwyer <beararesearchodwyer@eircom.net> wrote: From: Riobard O'Dwyer <beararesearchodwyer@eircom.net> Subject: [BEARA] Seasonal greetings. Riobard and Joan.... Thank you for the kind sentiments.....Roger and I send our very best also for a very happy Christmas and a more prosperous New Year to you and yours. It is amazing how the entire world seems to be wrapped up with their economies....it is not fun that is for sure!! I think we have all hit bottom, so 2009 should be headed upwards!! Once the lads return, you will all have a great visit, especially with the wee ones. We are spending our holidays between our two children's homes which are luckily only minutes from our home. The three grandson will keep us entertained during these cold and possibly snowy holidays!! The excitement has been building around here for weeks with the boys! Santa can't come soon enough! And a very Merry/Happy Christmas to everyone on the Beara List too! I for one still put a candle in the window (even though it's a battery operated LED one on account of the potential fire hazard in a Manhattan apartment) and I celebrate January 6 (actually the Saturday that falls near it) by holding an Epiphany party for close friends. As for past traditions - My mother told me that on Christmas Eve the family had a special dinner with a fish called ling that they ate only on that day each year. She didn't continue that tradition here in the Staes, but she often reminisced about it, along with the candle in the window and greens brought in (but no tree) and the special treats like mince pies and oranges and how the shops in Castletown would give people a little extra something as a gift. A very, very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all those on the Beara List and to all their friends.Times may be a bit tough at the moment, but they won't always be like that. Keep the spirit up and battle on. This is the first time that Joan & myself will be all on our own for Christmas. Two of the lads will be on duty; one will be gone abroad for a few weeks; and the other and his family will be celebrating at home. But they will be back to us again shortly after Christmas D.V. At present I'm working on Glengarriff records. No rest for the wicked !! Have a lovely holiday. Best wishes, Riobard & Joan -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. Thank to the book I discovered that We all were wrong about about Margaret McCarthy parents, we know that her father was dennis McCarthy a fisherman, if not the dennis McCarthy that was married to cathrine, The book does not say who the wife was. We had partial records to mike O'Sullivan and Margaret McCarthy, but at that point it stops. I know Peter O'Sullivan came to San Fransico through Angel Island off of California that was a recent discovery, so he went to sea and came to california, He came here with his brother, we have that record. What I Like to know if anyone has information is who was Margaret McCarthy parents, and where is Dennis and Margaret layed to rest is it on Bere Island or off the main land, and when were they married and where. It's true that Mary doesn't ask for anything, but it seems reasonable to make a small "donation" to the church to avoid having the parish (or Mary herself) shell out the money for postage and/or photocopy. I don't think this is unreasonable and will help to insure continued good will. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stan & Shiela Etheridge" <seth5455@bellsouth.net> To: <beara@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 8:56 AM Subject: Re: [BEARA] Buckley >I also have had the pleasure of receiving help from Mary Burke. I also have had the pleasure of receiving help from Mary Burke. She sent a letter back after a while when I wrote her several years ago. The mail lady who delivered it had only one request, that when I was done with the envelope, that I let her have it. Our mail lady in this small Florida rural town (Mims, FL) takes unusual stamped letters to local elementary classes, and she had never seen one from Ireland. ----- Original Message ----- From: <DBJOLEARY@aol.com> To: <beara@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2008 10:14 PM Subject: Re: [BEARA] Buckley >I don't think Mary Burke ever uses a donation as an incentive to look up > parish records.
