I happened across a passport application yesterday, for a Daniel Murphy from County Cork. The application was dated in the1890's, but it swore to the fact that he arrived in NY from Queenstown in 1859. Hi Lurene, My best guess would be Cobh, used to be called Queenstown. In the 1850s and living in the Glengariff area, what would be the most likely port of departure to the USA? Thanks, Lurene
Thank you Teresa, I did not find that I was looking for O'Sullivan and I keep forgetting several times I found that on my fathers side the spelling had letters dropped. It could be Peter, I went to the genweb site, but found nothing, and even went to san fransisco, I have the 1920 census which shows, peter, nora and their sons. We know from family history there were only 3 sons no daughters, and Kevin went by sullivan not O'Sullivan. Nora sullivan was born in 1878 in Ireland what paperwork we have it was bere island ireland, I cant read some on the old paper so I dont know what part of bere island, and then came to america in 1888. Perter O'sullivan and honora ( nora) son were John b. 1903, James A.( my grandfather) b.Jul 21 1905 and Kevin b. 1907 all in San Fransisco Ca. I live in the bay area so going to San Fransisco is not hard, it is that many records were distroyed, including the baptismal records. Dear Margaret Mary, Thanks for email received. Your O'Sullivan Seers, etc., are covered in my "Who were my Ancestors ? Bere Island Parish)" book, which costs $60 (including postage), paid by Bank Check (not Credit Union ---- which will not be cashed by a Bank here). Now as regards a Honora O'Sullivan, there were a number of them born in 1888, but I have penned them down to two. One was Hanora Mary born in Castletownbere to Cornelius O'Sullivan & Mary O'Sullivan. There were 9 children in the family. But they seemed to have emigrated. If this was the family, do you know to where they emigrated, or if they married, or to whom. If this was the family, do you know anything about the Peter P. O'Sullivan or where he came from ? (It may have been Bere Island, Castletownbere, or some part of the Beara Peninsula)). In that case, you would need to know his father's name and his mother's maiden name, and if he had any brothers or sisters (to check out). The other Honora was daughter of Jeremiah Sullivan O'Sullivan(Croumhane) & Ellen O'Sullivan, Teernahilan, Castletownbere Parish. She went to California. She was one of 11 children. The same questions apply to her. Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards, Riobard (= Gaelic for Robert) O'Dwyer. But I still can research far more details than were in the books. Though I won't be doing any books on the Adrigole and Glengarriff/Bonane Parishes, I still have the researching done on those Parishes. I't would only be a matter of putting it together and connecting up the various townlands through marriages and children, etc. If you wish to write to me, my address is:- Riobard O'Dwyer (Genealogist), Eyeries Village, Beara Peninsula, Co. Cork, Ireland. But, I suppose it is alot quicker to work via the internet nowadays. Your full home address would be appreciated for any correspondence. ----- Riobard.
Riobard, It is wonderful to see that you are still at it. As your friend I sincerely think that your work will keep you happy and healthy. As an O'Sullivan I recognize the enormous and unique value of your work. I am historically and genealogically petrified by the thought of you not finishing your research. We both know how close we came to losing the entire genealogical foundation of the Beara people. As with most geniuses, you may not be fully appreciated until you are long gone. But the name Riobard O'Dwyer will be forever honored by many generations to come. If you would ever consider bestowing upon me the great honor of sponsoring the publication of all of your research in one great "magnum opus" volume I would be forever indebted. I have absolutely no financial interest in the endeavor at all. My ulterior motive is very transparent: to link my name somehow with yours and claim some small place of honor in the shadow of your efforts and accomplishments. I am certain that such a volume, 'The Archives of Beara' would rise in esteem to the level of the Annals of the Four Masters for future historians of Gaelic Ireland. I know you had a bad experience with a similar project in the past. I would legally relinquish any financial claims from the outset to protect your legacy for your family's benefit. As I said, my reward would be to have my name associated forever with such an important work. We're not getting any younger. Give it a thought. I hope all is well with Joan and the rest of your clan. Maybe you can visit us at the castle this summer. We are presently having furniture made in Indonesia with the various O'Sullivan insignias carved into the design (the battle flag, the stag shield, the robin and the crown, the Blackthorn rose, Celtic knot work, etc.) The final products should be arriving this summer. The entire project will take many years to complete but eventually we should have an appropriate international home for the clan that I have come to honor and respect so much. I have two Harrington women who I believe are related and not sure how and believe they are from Beara - Mary Harrington and Hannah Harrington. Mary Harrington, born in Ireland who married Cornelius Sullivan, of Lawrence and Mary Sullivan on February 12, 1857 in New Bedford, MA in the presence of Eugene Sullivan and Ellen O’Neil at St. Lawrence Church, County Street, New Bedford, MA. Mary Harrington’s parents were Cornelius and Bridget. The moved to Fall River between 1857 and 1860, and then moved to Newport, RI between 1863 and 1865 and lived in the same house as Richard Nash and Hannah (Harrington). Hannah Harrington married Richard Nash on September 28,1861 Vol. 144 Page 99. in New Bedford, MA, they were married in the presence of John Harrington and Julia Murphy by the Reverend Joseph Gallon, St. Lawrence Church, County Street, New Bedford. Richard Nash 28, born in Ireland, Parents: John and Margaret, married Hannah Harrington, 26, Born in Ireland, Parents: Michael and Margaret. They had a child(stillborn) on July 17, 1862 in Fall River, MA, address - 2 William Street, moved to Newport, R.I. as evidenced by 1870 census and lived on Washington Street in the point section with Cornelius Sullivan and Mary (Harrington). I haven't been able to find any other Harrington relatives related to these two women? Patrick Sullivan In a message dated 1/24/2009 10:19:38 A.M. The 1911 census is hosted by Findmypast - not sure if Ancestry will get it eventually. http://www.1911census.co.uk/ I understand that Findmypast hope to offer it as part of their subscription package later in the year. At present it does cost to view the images individually but I guess you get lots of information for less than the cost of one certificate. Best wishes, Patsy - New Zealand Subject: Re: [BEARA] British Census 1911 Thanks Joan, All these little bits of information really help. My Cousin sent my info. to me. I think he actually accessed it from being a member of Ancestry UK (or at least he is linked in with that website). Yes, we don't get many £s for our euros or dollars these days in Britain! Best wishes Mary
