Hi Bill, I believe you're the administrator of the Beara list and since I've had difficulty in getting to the list I thought I'd pass this info on to you. Hope you don't mind. In Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, Mass. there's a headstone with the following inscription: Hannah wife of Maurice Lowney died January 8, 1877, aged 63 years born in Bearehaven, parish of Kilmanna Co. Cork, Ireland Since the headstone is so old the elements have done a job on it. In time the inscription will disappear. I would just like to know that, if someone is interested in Hannah, they would know where to find her or at least her final resting place. Thank you. Dear Elan and Bryan, I don't have any leads in Brighton for you, but thought you might like to know a bit about the City's background and where the records are housed. Most of the streets in Brighton still exist and are within 2 miles of my house. St. John the Baptist R.C. Church is still surviving and very well used, with an Irish priest in charge, and is still the principal Roman Catholic Church in Brighton. King George IV's Wife Maria Fitzherbert is buried there. It was the 4th Catholic Church to be built after the Reformation, in Classical Greek style with pillars at the front and a triangular bit on top. Myself and siblings were also christened there. Egremont is only a few hundred yards from the Church, and the seafront. Hove is the adjoining Town to Brighton, to the west, forming the City of Brighton and Hove (only a City since 2000 when the Queen made it so), with approximately 300,000 residents (about half of that when your relatives were there). Steyning was the old County Record Keeping Office for births, marraiges and deaths and is a few miles to the west of Brighton. East Sussex Records Office is in Lewes, in an ancient tithe barn (the County Town of administration for East Sussex, being about 8 miles north of Brighton), and West Sussex County Records Office is situated in Chichester, 33 miles west of Brighton. These are the modern records offices. Also, for people locally, there are records of rate books and street directories in the main Hove Library and in the Brighton Local History Centre at the Museum (part of King George IV's Palace, the Royal Pavillion), covering those residing in the Town. Sussex used to be one County, but is now divided into two Counties: East and West Sussex since approximately the early 1970s, with different administration. Steyning sits in West and Brighton and Hove in the East. Each County has its own law courts. Trams and horse buses had limited usage in Brighton, being built on 7 hills like Rome, so they were phased out and trolley buses replaced them, followed by motor buses in quick succession. The old Brighton Workhouse is still standing proudly at the top of a hill in Elm Grove near to the Racecourse. It transformed from a Workhouse into Brighton General Hospital, and the census records for inmates are available, during its time as the Workhouse. (I was actually born there after it became a hospital). I have never heard of Arnold Street, so it could have been knocked down and rebuilt upon over time. There is an Albert Road though. St. Philip's Church, I think, is still existing, but would need to check this. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck with your treehunting! PS. Coincidentally, I also had an Uncle who was at the Somme and Passchendaele (Ypres) and luckily survived until a grand old age (on the English side of my family). This in from my brother A TRUE IRISH GHOST STORY This story happened a while ago in Dublin , and even though it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock , it's true. Honest. John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a storm. The night was rolling in and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stop. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door.... only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on!! The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand repeatedly came through the window, but never touched or harmed him. Shortly thereafter John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road. So, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to the pub. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had. A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying and....wasn't drunk. Suddenly the door opened and two other people walked in from the stormy night . They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other...'Look Paddy...there's the idiot that got in the car while we were pushin' it.'
Hallo I am new to this list- am searching for any information on a Goodwin or related family who according to family story lived in the area of Bantry Bay.At this point there is very little information just that a Philip Goodwin b. 1821- 1833 emigrated to US first to Nebraska (occupation baker)and died in Butte Montana in 1895. There is information on his descendants but nothing on his Irish connections. I have checked Griffiths ( even though the date is later) and note there are about 5 Goodwin entries in Cork with 4 in the Bantry or Castletownbere area. Would welcome any suggestions or information. Well, Jessie I figured I would search my blocked list and see if I had the same problem. And there was Riobard. How very strange! Not quite sure how he ended up there, but if anyone else is having this problem I would check your blocked list as well. Hello Jessie, and all, If Riobard's messages are not being caught in your spamtraps, I'm not sure what's going on. I know they do appear in the message queue. The one thing you can do to keep track of everything posted to the Beara mailing list is check the archive regularly. It can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=beara I hope that helps. I'll take the matter up with Rootsweb to see if they can identify anything. Thanks Bill. I checked my spam blocker and he was not in there, so I don't know what is the problem. I seem to be having the same trouble that some others have had as I am not getting any of the email posts that Riobard O'Dwyer is making. Can someone tell me how I can fix this problem? Jessie O'Donnell
