One small correction here - I think the link you have posted is Riobard's e-address rather than a website link. There is a small amount of information at this site: http://odwyer.swiftsite.com/ which sets out a little of what he has researched over the years. However the links no longer work and it is necessary to physically contact Riobard at the address given, including the e-address below. It is certainly always worth contacting Riobard for queries in these localities. He has unlocked genealogy doors for many, many people. Just in from a a fabulous lecture given by Prof. Bill Mulligan at the Allihies Copper Mines Museum. It was mainly about life in the Michigan Copper Mines Country. There was a big crowd and Bill, who has done some great research, was given a warm reception. He goes back home to the States in a few days time. ---- Riobard.
Hello Terry, You are right about Smith, but lets not forget Jones, I think Sullivan ranks ahead of both! We may be on the right track with Brigid, I found the same Census listing in November but had no working birth dates. Since then with help from Riobard and Father Walsh, I now have birth and baptism dates of all my grandfather's siblings. Brigid was born 18 Aug 1886 and age 24 would be correct. I hope we are on to something. Do you know if Colorado required parents names as a license requirement? My grandparents Michael and Margaret immigrated to Boston (Dorchester) and then settled in Cambridge. Thanks for all your efforts, we may find Jerry and Brigid yet. Hi Jack, I guess we can be greatful are names aren't Smith. But it is almost as bad. I dont know if this will help. Colorado marriages shows Bridget M. Sullivan married Jerry Sullivan 23 Apr 1908, license # 43121 in Denver,Colorado I looked at 1910 census and found Jeremiah J. Sullivan age 34 immigrated in 1896 Mary B. Sullivan wife age 24 immigrated 1907(but may be 1904),son John J. age 1 1/2 born in Colorado. Both are from Free-Irish. With no dates I am not sure if this is who we are looking for. Also depending what year they were married, the earlier years, Catholic marriages are not on this list. Have you looked at the web site Colorado Historical newspapers.org. It is very time consuming, but I was able to link all of my great uncles through it. I haven't tried in the city papers, as I was lucky and my family lived in the small mountain towns where they talk about who visited whom, who received word of deaths, ect. I'll keep an eye open for any more, browse the old papers Were your grandparents in Colorado also? Hi Terry, I am trying to locate a Denis O'Sullivan/Sullivan and a Brigid O'Sullivan, brother and sister, from Glengarriff to Denver. Story goes that Denis married in Denver and had a son, John Joseph Sullivan. Brigid married a Jeremiah Sullivan from Glengarriff, and settled in Denver. They had three children, one a daughter, Mary who married Thomas Supple and moved to Ca. All the above were living in Denver during the Twenties. Any info would be appreciated. Jack, Try Rev. Gerald Walsh P.P. The Presbytary, Sacred Heart Church, Glengarriffe, Co. Cork. I think they still hold the Bonane Parish records. Riobard O'Dwyer may be able to help you too. He has his own website at _beararesearchodwyer@eircom.net_ (mailto:beararesearchodwyer@eircom.net) FYI it's the Parish of Bonane, not Bonare. I've been there a couple of times looking up my Sullivans and O'Learys. There are so many Sullivans and you have to know what name they used to differentiate from each other, ie; Sullivan the Shoemaker, which I found in Tousist/Bonane Parish, who was actually the g.grf. of my mom's sister-in-law Mary Sullivan, who married into my mom's German side of the family. Good luck. Don In a message dated 5/2/2009 11:18:42 A.M. Thank you for mentioning this. THe records go back even further. Here is a description: Collection: Death Records, 1897-1920 This Library of Michigan collection of Michigan death certificates features nearly 1 million records. Hi Irishdancer. Glad to see you are still in the hunt. In St. Illtyds church in Merthyr there is a marriage between Timothy Harrington and Margaret Donovan Feb. 21 1855. Could this be them? Timothy was born circa 1840 in Cork. Based on the children I'm guessing they were married about 1855, with first known child born 1856 in Merthyr Tidfil, Wales. Back to John - he married my GGM's sister, Margaret Parker 1889 in Fulham, MDX outside London. John was a Grenadier Guard, and had been in the Welsh Boarder Guard. By 1898 the family immigraded to Pennsylvania, where I am still in touch with John's GGdaughter. Should any of this sound familiar, I have more to share. BTW, Harrington is the second most common name in Beara area, so could be a needle in the haystack. Bonnie Your question is very familiar to me. I have 3 southwest Cork families who moved to the coal/ Iron towns of south Wales and later to Pittsburgh. They were entirely independent and joined in Pittsburgh. There were a large number of west Corkers who came to South Wales 1845- 1880. A bunch more went to the Wilkes Barre- Scranton and Mercer County areas of Pa and Youngstown Ohio area. Most of these 2nd migrations happened between 1865-1885. The reason for the second migration was the growing steel and coal industries at this time. The south wales iron works were losing market share to the US. The first ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil/ Dowlais closed in 1859. In addition to closures/mass layoffs there was labor strife etc. Although my prime Buckley family was married and had most of their children in Merthyr Tydfil they had one child in London area in 1863 and another in Bedford England in 1869. They returned to Merthyr shortly after each birth. I chalk each of these trips and the ultimate to Pittsburgh as a search for work to feed the family. My pieces of my family came to Pittsburgh from south Wales between 1871 and 1880. The reason they went to Wales during or slightly after Famine was a) familiarity and b) very low cost on coal ships returning from Kinsale, Skibbereen, Clonakilty and a few other small ports as well as the obvious Cobh. I hope that gives you something to consider on the bid picture.
