Terry, Wasn't O'Sullivan Beare's Castle west of Dunboy Castle? We were sent on west a bit and found ruins of an older castle and were told it had been O'Sullivan Beare's. I'd love to see Dunboy Castle now. Cows were tramping through the mud within its walls when we were there. Hi Terry, and all, Terry wrote: > Castle in West Cork's Castletownbere. Published in 1942, Du Maurier's family > saga, based on the Irish ancestors of her friend Christopher Puxley, Of course you're talking about _Hungry Hill_, Daphne DuMaurier's novel set in the old Puxley home and the region around it. My grandmother wore the covers off several copies and used to watch the film version of it every time it came on TV. Not so much because it's a great story (it really isn't) but because it was a story about the place she'd grown up. If you can find a used copy on line it's probably worth the price to get it and read it just for the history of the Beara region. Just keep in mind that Daphne DuMaurier never actually visited Beara while she was writing the novel, so she gets some of the detail wrong. -- Bill

Bill, I also found the article, could not find the next one, but if you type in History for your search word, I found this one-has a lot more Castle in West Cork's Castletownbere. Published in 1942, Du Maurier's family saga, based on the Irish ancestors of her friend Christopher Puxley, follows the lives of five generations of an Irish land-owning family, the Brodericks of Clonmore Castle from 1820 to 1920. But what many readers don't know is that Dunboy Castle is in fact the real 'Clonmore Castle', and Puxley residence. And if the walls of Dunboy Castle could talk, they would certainly have many a tale to tell of its turbulent history including being under siege during the Battle of Kinsale in 1601, or being burnt to the ground during the War of Independence. The castle is also famous as the location' of the Siege of Dunboy in 1602, which was the last armed resistance to the armies of Queen Elizabeth 1 at the end of the Nine Years War. During the siege the castle garrison of only 140 men held the castle for 11 days against an army of 4,000 men, before eventually being over-run. The castle, dating from the 16th century, was the original seat of the Beara branch of the O'Sullivans, known as the 'Sullivan Bere's, before the lands were acquired by the Puxley family around 1773. The Puxleys made a very lucrative living from smuggling, having formed an alliance with the O'Sullivans. But the smuggling soon came to an end when the English Revenue Commissioners appointed John Puxley as Surveyor of the Tides at Berehaven, in a clever effort to turn the poacher into a gamekeeper, so to speak. Puxley soon ran foul of the O'Sullivans in his new 'respectable' Terry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Gawne" <gawne@cesmail.net> To: "carrignua" <carrignua@comcast.net> Cc: "Beara" <Beara@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 09, 2009 8:34 PM Subject: Re: [BEARA] Evictions in Kilmacowen and Goulane (1907) > Hi Leesa, > > carrignua <carrignua@comcast.net> writes: > >> That was really interesting, Bill, >> I hope we can read the following week's lecture. > > I can't locate it online. Dear friends of Beara, I was snooping around online this afternoon, looking for references to my Beara ancestors, when I chanced across this article in Emara News. http://www.emara.org/news/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1033 It reads, in part: "THE latest lecture in the present series organised by the Beara Historical Society was given recently by Mr. Michael Murphy in Twomey?s Lounge Bar, Castletownbere. One of the largest attendances ever was given a most interesting talk which covered a period of evictions in Kilmacowen and Goulane in the Eyeries parish in 1907. What made the talk more interesting was that the speaker?s immediate family was one of those evicted." [There's an awful lot more, I recommend you go read it by clicking on that link if you're interested and have the time.] The part that I found especially interesting was this mention of the Holland family, my own ancestors: "The story of the Hollands in Kilmacowen is an interesting one. Around 1800 a Harrington man (O hUrdail) owned a major part of the land in Kilmacowen, (Harrington was and is the most common surname in the townland). Stephen Holland came to the area as a hedge school master from Coomhola near Bantry. He married Harrington?s daughter. Her wedding dress was said to have been made of 18 yards of velvet. For her dowry the daughter received 16 seanafachs ? in-calf heifers as a dowry. Harrington later gave them a 300 acre farm. One schoolmaster who did well for himself! The farm was later divided among their three sons. There were three Holland households in Kilmacowen until 1950s. None there now? The teaching gene was still in the family. Con Holland?s older stepbrother was first a teacher, then a schools? inspector and finally a Commissioner of Education." Stephen Holland was my g-g-g-grandfather, and I can say with confidence that the "teaching gene" still survives. -- Bill

Lisa, you don't know how your email traveled and really made the day for my cousin...i forwarded your email re your bere island trip with all the names in the cemetary to my cousin (Patrick) but he goes by the name Joseph O'Sullivan who is a retired policeman and currently resides in Dublin....he was born on the island and left when he was 12 or 13.....in fact i was lucky enough to travel the island with him through every nook and cranney and its a trip i'll never forget.........my dad was born in cloughland and my cousin michael still lives on the old homestead.......one time we stayed at murphy's and the other in a cottage where another cousin Jim Harrington let us stay........in any case, my cousin Joe wrote back with a written litany of the folks he remembered growing up there and i think it really brought back memories and he really appreciated it....so there you go, like a stone thrown in the middle of a pond, you never know how far the ripples go!!!...thanks for your ripples!!! you made a lot of people's day who have roots in Bere Island!!! Hi Lisa, I think your idea of creating a Memorial Headstone Photosite to the peoples of Beara a sheer stroke of genius, although the prospect of attempting to photograph most possibly in excess of 50,000 headstones across the graveyards of Beara somewhat daunting. (Perhaps Riobard could give us some idea of the actual number) Still an old saying used by the older people of Beara seems apt: - 'A Stone a Day builds a Castle' I set up a computer database nearly thirty years ago now for a local council in England to do very much the same, although without photos. Then it was collated by using the long term unemployed as a sort of work rehabilitation scheme. Maybe an idea would be to suggest it to local Schools as a long term project? There could be some problem with the more recent interments though as people may well have objections over having their recent grief publicised. Maybe a rule of thumb might be to photograph everything, but only display photos of gravestones over 20 years old. Beara Historical Society would be more than happy to contribute to this project by offering free web-space and creating a separate PhotoSite where everyone could upload their existing photos as a start. Anyone else out there have any thoughts on Lisa's brilliant idea? Best Wishes. Thank you all for your sage advice! Our trip to Bere Island was fabulous and my husband and I connected with Winnie Murphy, his dad's first cousin. We are sorry to have missed meeting Riobard. Hi Jack, Looks like you are in luck! After 1881 a couple wanting to marry purchased a marriage license from the county clerk. These applications include the bride and groom's age and birthdates, residence and parents names, previous marriages, divorce status, and names of witnesses. Unlike other Colorado vital records, which can be obtained from County Vital Records Offices, marriage records are maintained by county clerks. For official copies of Colorado marriage certificates, contact the county clerk where the license was issued. Early Colorado marriage records are public records. I am desperately trying to contact someone who used the sbroh name doing research on Michael Holland 1817 regarding his sons who came to America. They had a message posted in 2000 regarding letters in their possession. This person listed Michael,Jerry,John, Patrick,Stephen,Cain,Timothy,Denis,Con, O'Leary. They also mention spouses Harrington,Bensen. I have obits and proof connecting these brothers and would very much like to contact sbroh. If anyone knows how to contact this person today, would you please have them contact me. Terry
