Thanks Susan. I pretty quickly found my 4 grandparents. It's funny seeing their ages (20, 17, 9 and 3 years old) and picturing them so young. My grandmother and her sisters all had nicknames. We always thought my aunt "Nony" was really Nora. The census has Honoria. I believe that the practice at that time, which is not usually the case any longer, was for the calves to be separated from their mothers shortly after birth. As they would need protection for awhile till they had grown a bit, the calf house would probably have been where they were kept. This would be as opposed to the cow house, which would have housed only the cows. In the 1970s and 80s, I know that the calves were separated from their mothers later than in 1911, but they were still separated after they were a few months old and kept in separate fields by my family. A cow house (and presumably a calf house) would have had room for several cows (or calves). In case city dwellers don't realize this, a cow can't give milk unless she's had a calf recently. So, this would also be a way of controlling how much milk the calf received, probably sparing more additional milk to make butter from. As I understand it, butter was the primary product of Beara farms well into the 20th century. Do is abbreviation for ditto Church of England (a.k.a. Anglican church) was the established (state recognised) church in Ireland until the late 1860's I think. Can't help with the other queries except that cow or calf houses would have held a number of cattle (depending how affluent the family was). There are boiling houses for different purposes, 1 of which is for llinen... http://www.irishlinenmills.com/Production/18c_production/18century09.htm Calves were separated from their mothers soon after birth to shorten the time when the mothers milk could be used by the farmer. Thanks for posting the links. Even though I have yet to find my Beara connection I really enjoyed looking at the various pages of Timothy Sullivan families and how they lived and worshiped and so on. I do have a few questions. What does DO stand for? I know it means duplicate above entry but wondered the exact meaning. What is a boiling house? Why is it that so many children listed as scholors still are listed as not able to read when aged 9 or 7 and so on? It seems quite a few families had more cow houses than rooms in their houses. What is a cow house vs a calf house and did they hold more than 1 animal each? What is/was the Church of Ireland? I did kind of crack up at the employment listing of "farmer's daughter" now we know who all those jokes were referring to. ~~C Sullivan

Susan - thanks for posting this to the list. Saw it on another list yesterday and have already found my great grandmother living in Ardgroom with other family members, fantastic. Nine counties online now for 1911 and more to come later this year, according to the website. Great resource, and I understand the 1901 should not be too far away either. I just went to the Achives website and found my Grandparents , my mother Mary Downing Croughan and her Sister Nora and Brothers Tim and John , in the 1911 Census . The Children were all under seven at the time . It was a moving experience ! I recommend using it if the dates are applicable to your " roots " ! When they complete the 1911 census, then they will work on adding the 1901 census. On their web site, they say they hope to finish it by the end of this year (2009). So please just keep checking back every month. I'm glad it has been useful. I looked at it for the first time in months to look for someone in Dublin, and was surprised when I got results back showing Cork! Thanks so much for the heads up. I had looked a few months ago when it was only Dublin. Found my family. It really brought tears to see my mother, age 2, and her brothers listed, along with my grandparents, my great-grandparents and two great uncles who died in the influenza epidemic. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Daily" <cullivans@gmail.com> To: <beara@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 30, 2009 10:27 PM Subject: [BEARA] 1911 Census online for Cork > Has anyone looked at this census yet for Beara relatives? Hi Jack, Sorry your not having much luck tracking Bridgett. I am such a beginner at this, I am no help at all. Just curious, do you have any O'Sullivans (Suonish) living in county Cork around the 1850's. My gggrandfather Holland married a Mary O'Sullivan-they lived in Kilmacowen. I only know her fathers name was John O'Sullivan (Suonish), of Eskavaude, Reentrisk, Allihies Parish. She may have died in Ballineen, County Cork. Do you have any Sullivans from there? This is so frustrating sometimes. A lot like golf, then you get that one hit that hooks you. Hi Ron, I recieved the marrige certificate, what a bummer. Looks like the CIA classified it as TOP SECRET. No Parents names, no birth dates, only the date of the marrige and the priest name + witnesses. That is it, nothing else. I guess I can now check the newspapers in as much as I have A marrige date. Really hoping to tie these two down with at least birth dates, oh well, the hunt goes on. Thank again for all your help Jack ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald Barnes" <barnes149@comcast.net> To: <beara@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 05, 2009 5:47 PM Subject: Re: [BEARA] Sullivans Birth & Baptism Certificate Glengarriff > Hi Jack, > Looks like you are in luck! > After 1881 a couple wanting to marry purchased a marriage license from the > county clerk.
