Be well, Riobard. It's past time you had a good rest. Thank you for everything you've done for us all. Blessings, Gail Dennehy, Sullivan Baum, Downing for the love of books www.mythnmagic.net
I also use Legacy and have for years and am happy with it. It is very user friendly. Helen In a message dated 10/26/2009 2:43:36 A.M. Thanks for the excellent technical advice. I've known so many people who've had difficulties trying to switch programs and systems. The gentleman who originally wrote Family Tree Maker and then sold it, has written Rootsmagic. I bought it and am loading information. I saw a demonstrated by a professional genealogist of it and Vista combined. I fell in love as it was so well integrated that I can link all the documents and photos associated with a person and can easily pull them up. It cost $29.95 plus shipping as I wanted the disk. The book was on sale for $10 and I picked it up. Very nice people and very willing to answer questions. Our genealogy group mas Macs in the majority. Every one seems reasonably happy with Reunion. But there has been some grumbling about the lack of choices with genealogy programs for Macs. As long as it works, I'm happy. There is another choice -- Gramps [Genealogical Research and Analysis Management Programming System]. It is free and open source. Go to http://www.gramps-project.org for more info. I had previously used Roots IV, transferred to Ultimate Family Tree when they took over Roots, but UFT seems not to be supported much any more. I was getting tired of companies coming and going and was concerned about future support so I decided to go the open source route -- that way I do not have to rely on any company to maintain proprietary software. The transfer from UFT to Gramps was easy -- just created a .GED file in UFT and Gramps read it in fine. Being open source Gramps is ideally run on a Linux system [which is what I use] but they do say they have a Windows installer for it. So you don't have to "bite the dust" (or bullet) and buy a Mac or any other new computer. You could install Linux on your PC [keep Windows if you like and dual boot]; you could also install Linux on your Mac. Dear Beara list members, This is a kindly intended reminder from your mailing list manager that requests for opinions about genealogy software should not be taken as license to engage in diatribes against this or that operating system. It's possible to find such things in many other places on the web. We're here to share our interest in our Beara ancestry. So if there's some genealogy software you like and want to recommend, that's fine. Please feel encouraged to do so. But let's keep our posts focused on the topic at hand, which is genealogy. -- Bill

I loved FTM as program to do family trees. But I have a Mac, & I was absolutely disheartened & discouraged & outraged when FTM stopped making it for the Mac when the Mac upgraded to its latest computer chip & OS. I have lost ALL my carefully documented family information & have not felt like going back over 5 years of paper work to redo it. I highly recommend RootsMagic. I have Family Tree Maker and Legacy, but much prefer RootsMagic. In addition to all of your text information, you can scan all of your documents into it and add photos of everyone. There is also and added feature called RootsMagic-to-Go. You put your info onto a flash drive and take it with you when you visit a library or relatives and just display it on their computers. This is a read only version of your data so you cannot add to it while using it. But it is better than dragging a laptop everywhere and the information is always portable. I have been using Family Tree Maker for years and really like the way it goes directly to Ancestry.com to suggest people and places to add to the tree and then integrates the results that you choose with citations and optional screen captures of the census pages. The answer depends on what you want to do and what type of computer you have. The most popular software for Windows is Family Tree Maker, which costs about $40. For that you get an easy interface to work with and the ability to both design reports and, if you wish, everything you need to prepare a book of your family tree. If all you are concerned about is keeping track of the tree, any of the softwares that were mentioned are good. Free software, however, is not necessarily the best for tracking such things as sources and media (document files, pictures, videos, and the like) of your family. If you have a Mac, Reunion is the best available software for that operating system. One other advantage of Family Tree Maker is that, since it is now distributed by Ancestry, it gives you the capability to download documents directly from your Ancestry.com account into the hard drive, allowing you to attach those document files to the individuals they apply to. This will make your filing chores easier. I have no financial interest in any software or company. I have used FTM since 1994 to keep track of my extended tree. What software you choose, make sure it is GED.com compatible. The LDS church has created this standard which enables files of the compatible softwares to be exchanged and merged without retyping Bob > To: Beara-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Sat, 24 Oct 2009 16:14:07 -0400 > From: pinkpagoda@aol.com > Subject: [BEARA] best family tree software > can anyone recommend one > > i created a simple family tree using a software at my workplace meant > for doing organizational charts. it's served me up to now but now i > want a real family tree program to help me maintain all the new family > information i am getting. can anyone recommend a software or should i > join something like ancestry.com? there are so many choices out there. > i don't want to make the wrong choice. thank you. > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BEARA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
I agree with Thomas. I have been using Legacy for about five years, and highly recommend it. It's thorough and easy to use. Hi, I use the Personal Ancestral File software that the Mormons developed. It's available for free at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/paf/ There are prettier packages available that you have to pay for, and online java based packages that start out free and then charge you money after you hit a certain threshold of usage. They all have their pros and cons. I've found the PAF software to be best for my uses.
