I dont want to rain on anyones party but............ If for example you see a baptism in ...lets sat Castletownbere...... so and so son of Patrick and Mary Harrington. Im not too sure you can assume it's yours. You have to take into consideration the surname....do you realise how many with this name there were? Find them in the census.......obtain the birth or marriage cert and add to parish record. There were so many with the same name ....for example you could have Patrick, Paudie, Pa, Pat, Patch, Pádraig/h , Podsie Harrington. All of course baptised Patrick but to differentiate from each other. Good luck. PS yes the names of mother and father can be the same too easily. > From: bjmahon31@verizon.net > To: beara@rootsweb.com > Date: Sat, 28 Nov 2009 09:38:35 -0500 > Subject: Re: [BEARA] Kerry records to be online > > I went on line yesterday and found great uncles and aunts I didn't know I > had. Dear listers. >From what I can see, this site www.irishgenealogy.ie leads to the Central Signposting Index which was, I think, the forerunner of the Irish Family History Foundation IFHF (County Heritage Centres). Currently the irishgenealogy.ie site covers 10 counties and in some cases has a little more information on the search results than the IFHF search provides (eg spouse name for marriages). However if you have a 'match' you are directed to the relevant IFHF website for further information (or in some cases, what appears to be a private business). The IFHF sites now cover the majority of Irish counties, including those on the above site, and certainly hold many records. They are 'free' to search after you register. However there is a charge to download any records and at present this is five euro per record. You can check coverage and/or register here: http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/ If/when the Kerry records come online on whichever site, this will be a great addition to the existing resources. The Department's news release is confusing in that it points to irishgenealogy.ie and yet refers to the 'Kerry Heritage Centre' - I cannot find any reference to an existing Kerry Heritage Centre online although there seem to be centres in various towns. I would like to see this clarified to avoid confusion and disappointment. If any lister has more detailed information I would be grateful to have it posted on the list. I saw this article mentioned in Dick Eastman's newsletter, and wanted to share. I know there are Beara listers who do have some overlap into the Kerry area, so maybe this may be a good source for you! If you click on the link, you will also get to read some user comments which may answer your questions. They are not online today, but might be appearing Nov 24. http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2009/11/kerry-church-records-to-appear-online.html Kerry Church Records to Appear Online The Clerical Whispers web site has an article of interest to anyone with Kerry ancestry. The site states: Almost 600,000 Kerry church records have been handed over to the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism as part of a major genealogy project. They include documents relating to baptism, marriage and death, some of which date back to the 1750s. The records will now appear free of charge on the irish-genealogy.ie website and will allow people to trace their Kerry roots more easily. You can read the full article at http://clericalwhispers.blogspot.com/2009/11/kerry-church-records-handed-over-to.html . My thanks to Judith Wight for telling me about this story.
