Hi Ann, all, I did notice the bare feet. Couldn't help but think my grandmother may have looked just like that when she was a young girl in Castletownbere, before she left for America in 1912. Dear friends of Beara, I just saw this and had to share it with you. --- Begin quoted text --- In May 1913, Marguerite Mespoulet and Madeleine Mignon, two French women in their early 30s, arrived in Co. Galway, armed with heavy cameras and, more importantly the Autochrome Lumière plates, which enabled them to produce the first colour images of Ireland. Their assignment to photograph the people of Galway was part of a massive project entitled ?The Archives of the Planet? sponsored by a wealthy French banker and philanthropist called Albert Kahn. These photographs show that old Ireland was by no means as austere as traditional black and white photographs imply. As well as the brown bogs, yellowing gorse and grey skies, the two French ladies captured the people of Claddagh and Spiddal wearing costumes so colourful they would not be out of place in the Himalayas. In her journal, Mespoulet wrote: ?The young men leave for North America, the young women too and when the old die the house is abandoned and falls into ruin. There is hardly a village where one doesn't find forlorn skeletons of small grey houses invaded by nettles.? Kahn went on to lose his fortune with the Wall Street Crash of 1929, but his immense Archive amassed some 72,000 color photographs between 1909-1931, including 73 of Ireland by Mespoulet and Mignon. You can see a slide show of these early Irish photographs here at http://albert-kahn.hauts-de-seine.net/archives-de-la-planete/mappemonde/europe/irlande/ The photographs, recognized as one of the finest collections in the world, now reside at the site of Kahn?s garden in the Musee Albert Kahn at 14, Rue du Port, Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris. Columbia's Rare Book and Manuscript Library holds a collection of Mespoulet's papers. As far as I can tell, there's still masses to learn from Kahn's exceptional project, so if anyone out there is seeking a new line of hobby ... --- End quoted text --- I'm going to put a link to this on the Children of Beara blog too, and perhaps I'll be able to figure out how to embed the images there. But do take a moment and look at them. The website is in French, so it's a bit hard to read if you don't read Francais, but even so, the images are beautiful. -- Bill
One final record. I believe this is Dennis' brother who was the informant on Dennis' death record. Again, mother's maiden name listed as O'brien. http://genealogy.az.gov/azdeath/029/10290046.pdf On Sun, Dec 2, 2012 at 5:02 PM, Susan Twomey <[email protected]> wrote: > Michael, > > Although my DNA results say that our common ancestor may be a Murphy, I am > thinking that perhaps we may be related through the Harringtons. In 1910 Dennis is residing with his sister Mary Gill. You can find her death information here: http://genealogy.az.gov/azdeath/055/10550049.pdf This poses a conundrum for you since she lists her mother's maiden name as O'brien. Timothy and Cornelius known to be brothers in County Cork. This Cornelius born 1821 married to Honora Lowney of Beara, probably died there. The others going to America for now listed by me as siblings per DNA match, may actually be cousins. Riobard may recall our correspondence on this subject years ago before DNA was being used as a tool. On Sun, Dec 2, 2012 at 5:54 PM, Mike Saunders <[email protected]> wrote: > One final record. Michael, Although my DNA results say that our common ancestor may be a Murphy, I am thinking that perhaps we may be related through the Harringtons. This is a "long shot", but my great-grandmother Mary Harrington who married Dennis Twomey in Grass Valley, CA in 1870 was born c. 1850 in Ireland, but not sure where. Most records say Cork, but one church record says Kerry...so perhaps close to the border. I have a birth record for her first son Daniel that says he was born in Massachusetts...very possibly Charleston outside Boston. There was a Dennis and Mary Twomey listed as parents of Daniel born Aug. 1872...same date Dan lists on his WWI draft registration card...although that says he was born in California. Arizona 1882 census says he was born in Massachusetts. My greatgrandmother named her first daughter Mary, but her second daughter was Catherine/Katherine/Kate. Names of the boys were Daniel, Dennis, and John Francis. Do you have these names in your family? My greatgrandmother Mary Harrington Twomey had a brother Francis Joseph "Frank" Harrington in San Francisco c. 1894...who was a witness to her daughter's marriage. He lived for a time in Arizona not far from his sister. My greatgrandmother married in California in 1870, had 5 children born in California, Massachusetts and Nevada. Her husband Dennis who was a gold miner died in San Bernardino, CA 1878, and then she moved to Tombstone, Arizona and then Bisbee, and then back to Los Angeles, CA where she died in 1931. Anyway, Harringtons and Murphy's were so many, it's been hard knowing for sure sometimes if I'm on the right track...but it is possible we have a Harrington/Boston/Eyeries connection? Michael C. Murphy (1788-1890) of Clonglascan and Catherine Harrington (Caobach) of Goulane, Kilmacowan, Eyeries, parents of Timothy Murphy of Clonglascan, County Cork, Eire. Based on autosomal DNA match, trying to connect with family in Boston area and Charleston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts USA, some settling in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc.. Timothy Murphy (1825-1903) married Mary Murphy, daughter of Darby Rua Murphy and Maire Bhan O'Neill of County Cork, Eire. Possible siblings in America include Dennis, Mary, John Henry, Jeremiah, Cornelius, Patrick, Julia and Daniel (my mother's great-grandmother). Daniel married Johanna Crowley of Derrycriveen, Beera, County Cork in 1856 at St. Malachy's Church, Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wisconsin. The Irish Army Census of 1922 --the year the Irish National Army was formed- just celebrated its 90th anniversary. The Anglo-Irish Agreement stipulated that with regard to strength, that the force could not exceed the size of the military establishments maintained in Great Britain as that which the population of Ireland bears to the population of Great Britain. Without accurate information, headquarters staff could not adequately estimate pay bills, feed, clothe or procure weapons or even determine how many troops they had at their disposal. By October 1922 the Army Council had decided that a Census of the National Forces would be taken as at midnight 12/13th November. The census hasn't been transcribed, so you'll need to have some idea of where your relative might have been based in 1922 The census has been placed on the Irish Military Archives Website: click on: http://tinyurl.com/cb7fu8a original url: http://www.militaryarchives.ie/collections/online-collections/military-archi ves-irish-army-census-records
David, Could you tell me who your mothers parents/grandparents were? My Hollands were from Castletownbere and Kilmackowen And we can not give Riobard enough thanks for all that he has given us! Many thanks and blessings to all! Terry -----Original Message----- From: David Mcgrath Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2012 12:23 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [BEARA] Thank you Thank you, Riobard for your wonderful columns. They are always a pleasure. You're a treasure for all of us with our Beara roots. My mother, Mary Jane Holland, was born in Butte in 1899. but was sent back to live with her Grandparents in Castletownbere at Gauer House when she was one or two. The family story was that Butte was just too tough a place to raise a daughter. I think she stayed there 'til she was about 7 or 8 when her parents came to fetch her back to Butte. She was so upset about leaving sweet Cork, the story goes, that she asked the priest if he would marry her, so that she could stay on. He declined and so off she went to Montana, never to return but with a wealth of kind words and happy memories for Beara. Thanks again Riobard. So very true, what more can we say? Riobard thank you doesn't express my deep gratitude for assisting me in my quest to find where in Cork my Harrington and Lowney grandparents came from. What a surprise to have your work reveal generations of my family. I am still trying to comprehend the possibly of someday visiting their home place and finding cousins. You have opened up so many possibilities for so many of us for generations to come. I hope your heart is filled with joy as you devote time to other endeavors. Thank you again! That was wonderful, Terrance. What more can we say.... Carolyn -----Original Message----- From: Terrance O'Dwyer <[email protected]> To: beara <[email protected]>; Beara <[email protected]> Sent: Sat, Nov 24, 2012 11:25 pm Subject: Re: [BEARA] BEARA Digest, Vol 7, Issue 235 With some trepidation, I attach the following: le haghaidh ár gcara agus múinteoir A Corkman from Michigan came To Beara, his real home. And the master of the classroom Became the source of great renown-- For the Yanks and all the others He could not turn away; Giving comfort with his answers Of where our ancestors lay. This son of Ballycrovane Whose father led the raid Surprising British soldiers And hastening the day Of Irish independence Tis something to behold A story true of bravery That never will grow old. This Dwyer from Ardgroom >From one very gifted clan Preserved they our music-- And now we think it grand Dwyers of Cailroe Of Toormore and Ardigole Indeed, everyone derived from Beara Is saddened to the soul To know that Riobard O’Dwyer Wants some time for this own To while away a day or two With his beloved Joan No. Lucky are we that have met him; Whose paths crossed in some way; And I think it true, we must agree He’s a man we don’t meet every day.
Being still within a "thanksgiving"mode, thank you to Riobard and to Bill for all that they have given to the community of researchers. I am thankful for them and the gift of their time & knowledge. Wishing them and all the Beara brethren a blessed Christmas season. As a genealogist, I know the hard work and dedication it takes to work on your own family. Doing this work for others, often not getting paid for it, demonstrates a powerful love of Ireland, Beara, and the history of an oft tortured people. My congratulations to you, for finally taking the time to be yourself and giving more of your time to your lovely wife, Joan, and the rest of your family. Thank you for everything you have done. In 2008, my mother was in the early stages of dementia. Her brother gave her a substantial gift and suggested she use it on a big trip. She asked me to take her to Ireland to see her relatives although she had no idea who they were. During my search I came across this list. A very kind person responded to my question, gave me the exact pages in Riobard's book re: our Allihies relatives, and topped it off with the phone number of the Allihies priest with a suggestion to call him. Our cousin still lived next door to the parsonage and the priest gave me her phone number. Mom couldn't remember much about the trip afterwards, but knew that she (from Spokane) got to see her Irish relatives with her daughter and granddaughter from Virginia and told everyone she met whether they knew her or not... : ) We're heading to Spokane for Christmas to probably say our final goodbyes to Mom, but until 6 months ago, she would look at her photo album of the trip and smile... Oh Terrance, This is a fine poem. I'm going to be saving a copy of this. Thank you so very much for writing it, and for adding your own bit of glory to your fine family name. With some trepidation, I attach the following: le haghaidh ár gcara agus múinteoir A Corkman from Michigan came To Beara, his real home. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2012 6:40 PM To: [email protected] Subject: BEARA Digest, Vol 7, Issue 235 Today's Topics: 1. To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" As someone who has learned a lot about the ancestry of my children through Riobard's amazing work, I, too, want to say "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your tireless dedication and loving work." As a genealogist, I know the hard work and dedication it takes to work on your own family. To: <[4][email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" As someone who has learned a lot about the ancestry of my children through Riobard's amazing work, I, too, want to say "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your tireless dedication and loving work." As a genealogist, I know the hard work and dedication it takes to work on your own family. That trip would have never happened with you Riobard...thank you from the bottom of my heart!
