I did a quick search and found some DNA info on this list. Curious if there is a place where people with ancestors from Beara can share Gedmatch info and possibly connect. My people are from the townland of Adrigole. Sullivan's. If there is no other place to share info, maybe we could use this thread? Kevin
The Civil Registration Bill of 2014 has passed in the Irish Legislature known as the Oireachtas Éireann. The bill authorizes Irish records of historic births (over 100 years), marriages (over 75 years), and deaths (over 50 years) to be published online. The bill was enacted and signed into law on December 4, 2014 (Act Number 34 of 2014) (See Bill Number 71 of 2014). To read the bill go to: http://www.oireachtas.ie/documents/bills28/acts/2014/a3414.pdf. It will take a while before the records are placed on the website. A notice on the www.irishgenealogy.ie has a link to the website of the on-line Indexes of the Civil Registers (GRO) of Births, Marriages, Civil Partnerships and Deaths and to Church Records of Baptism, Marriage and Burial from a number of counties. The website is part of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, A notice on the website says they hope to restore certain civil indices soon. History The Irish website www.irishgenealogy.ie posted indices of civil records. The online indices were launched on July 3, 2014-- the first time that the Indexes have been made available online by the General Register Office. However, on July 24 I reported that the Irish Data Protection Commissioner, Billy Hawks, and The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht removed the database of civil registration records from the website on July 18 as it included information on living people. That precipitated the amendment to the Civil Registration Act which would permit records to be published online of birth records over 100 years, marriages over 75 years and deaths over 50 years. Thanks so much, Riobard. Very interesting, but oh so confusing. Yet another way to confound my search for Hannah Sullivan McCarthy!! Still, my journey continues! Dear Betsy, I NEVER GIVE UP. ELLEN'S PARENTS, DANIEL KELLY & MARY POWER WERE MARRIED IN BALLINAKILLA CHURCH, BERE ISLAND, on Feb. 21st 1824 by Fr. G. Prevendeville who was a Curate. The Witnesses were Jer Kelly and Edmond Power. The Witnesses at the time used be two men. Mary was from Derrycreeveen, on the Western End of Bere Island, just inside the Atlantic Ocean), but there are no Powers left there now. DANIEL & MARY settled down in a small Townland in the Allihies Parish, and which was called KEALOGUE and had six children while they were in Kealogue :- 1) Jeremiah in Dec. 1825 (after there was a big gap. Many men in those days were miners in the Allihies copper mines, and at times went to copper mines in the States for a while before returning home. Then there was 2) Nora (Jan. 1834): 3) was your ELLEN, who was Baptised in June 1836, not as you thought in 1835: 4) was a Mary, Baptised in Apr. 1840; followed by a Catherine in Mar. 1843; and last of all was a Daniel in Oct. 1845 during the Famine in Ireland. During, and after, the Famine in Ireland, many, especially from the Beara Peninsula, emigrated to the States, especially to the copper mines around Calumet, Michigan, and Butte, Montana. Sorry, Betsy, I'll have to go, as somebody very, very dear to me is ---- well,I won't say any more for now. I may be back to you in a week or so. Anyhow, look, it depends on circumstances. Riobard. Looking for any information on Jeremiah Sullivan who married Ellen L Kelly (b. 1835) in Allihies. I believe her parents were Daniel Kelly & Mary Power. They moved to Fall River, Mass and had a son, Jeffrey E Sullivan (b. 1868). I'm not sure where Jeremiah came from. Any help would be appreciated! Betsy
Today, St. Stephen's Day, Dec. 26th, is what we call in Ireland: "The day of the Wren", or "Wren's Day", or as the old people used say: "The Day of the Wran". I was only after coming out of the Teachers' Training College/Qualifying to become a Teacher. There was a local/Ardgroom (Beara) football team, and we were looking for funds; so we decided to "Go in the Wran". There were 13 of us, all dressed up in various types of "contrary" costumes. I was leading the "music" Band with my accordion. Behind me was my younger brother Sean beating the drum. A big, tall Policeman, Tadhg/Tim Harrington (Uonhi) (now R.I.P) was carrying a long pole, with a pig's bladder attached to it; 6 feet 3 inches John (Uxside) Harrington (now also R.I.P.) carried a pike, like those used in the Insurrection of 1798; Tadhg's brother Jerome had a big bag for gathering the money; and we had our army of soldiers marching behind, singing for all they were worth. After "gathering some money/coins, we headed about a mile "east" the road, close to the Kerry border. Living in a particular house was a bachelor. Again, singing loudly: "Danny Mike Tade is a dacent (decent) man -- and to his house we brought this "Wran"; "Up with the kettle and down with the pot, and give us an answer, and lave (leave) us be off". We knocked on the door --- no answer. We knocked again --- no answer. We knew that Danny Mike Tade was inside the door, but he didn't want to give us any money. When we got no further answer from Danny, who was not known for his generosity, Tadhg hit the door with a wallop of the pig's bladder. Out came Danny. "Who struck the door ?" says he. There was a dead silence from our "army". "Who struck the door ?" again asked Danny. Once more --- silence from our men. "Spake (speak) up", says Danny. "The mouths was (were) big enough aby (by) ye awhile ago". We decided, there and then, that we weren't going to get any donation from this "Minister for Finance", so we headed over to Eyeries Village, about 4 and a half miles away. 'Twas night-time by then. The first house we came to was Joe (Quin) Murphy's Pub --- Joan's father's house. Joe happened to be filling a few pints of Guinness for his neighbours. We started off singing at the top of our voices: "Kelly, the boy from Killanne", "The boys of Wexford), and "Nell Flaherty's drake". Out the door came Joe. "Shut up", says he, "ye pack of fools. There's a corpse in a coffin across the road in the Church !!" So, having respect for the dead, who might finish up by haunting us, we decided to call it a day. And, so ended our football team's "Wran". Riobard.
Though today is Christmas Day, it is also a day when people visit the graves of their own people. Joan & myself are just home from visiting the grave of my parents in the fairly new graveyard in Gortnabulliga, close to Eyeries Village; to the grave of Joan's parents in the upper graveyard in Foildarrig, near the town of Castletownbere; and to the graves of my ancestors in the Lower Graveyard in Foildarrig. I was telling a man in Gortnabulliga Graveyard of a story I heard many years ago. There were these two Doctors, and, at the time, experiments were being carried out on dead bodies. Anyhow, the two Doctors visited the ancient Glebe graveyard, about a mile to the west of Castletownbere, and, in the middle of a dark night, began digging for the bones of one particular man who was buried down the field. A local man, who had heard that the two Doctors were to go digging that night, went to the graveyard before the two Doctors had arrived, and hid behind a clump of furze bushes close by. In case they would be seen, the two Doctors arrived in the middle of the night. The wind was howling. They began to dig, and had gotten down a few feet when the man behind the furze bushes left out a loud roar -- "waau-ah-uuu-ah". The two Doctors dropped their shovels and "took off" like as if they were being chased by a typhoon. The more they ran, the louder your man was roaring "wooooooo --- ah ah" after them. The two Doctors didn't wait to open the gate; they jumped headlong over the wall; got up like two March hares; and ran and ran until they reached the main road. "A ghost; a ghost" they cried. They never again "visited" the Glebe graveyard, and were glad to do their experimenting elsewhere. Riobard. -- Riobard (O'Dwyer)
