Or, if you are in the New Haven area, go to the museum. We did in the fall and were very moved - and impressed. A great exhibit, telling an amazing story. It is a nice building in a very accessible location. Sue On 2/13/2015 7:43 AM, Jane Harrington via wrote: > Thanks for sharing the mining accident database, Bill. Thanks for sharing the mining accident database, Bill. Very interesting to study. I want to also share something that I just became aware of (for those who might be slow in the discovery, too), and that is the digital image archive at Quinnipiac's Great Hunger Museum. I've never seen images pulled together like this. In trying to imagine what my Beara ancestors' lives were like during the Great Hunger, I have found newspaper/periodical drawings by J Mahoney to be most helpful. But to find more than a few of the most famous images, I've had to scour the archive at NLI in Dublin, which is not very convenient for me! This database has them all, plus those of all other artists of the time. Though Mahoney didn't get all the way to our parts, his West Cork images are probably very telling of what things looked like on the Beara. This link should get you there: https://repository.quinnipiac.edu/collections/access/home.do Jane Harrington
Dear friends of Beara, In today's Irish Genealogy News, Claire Santy looks at the UK Coal Mining Accidents and Deaths Index, 1700-1950. The article can be found at http://www.irishgenealogynews.com/2015/02/irish-ancestors-who-worked-in-mine s-or.html Of particular interest to Beara researchers are the records from Allihies. Even though it was a copper mine, its incidents still are included in the database. Perhaps this will prove useful to some of you. Bill Gawne
Jane, I enjoyed reading the article that you wrote. Very interesting and makes me want to subscribe, perhaps, to that magazine. I have Harrington relatives from Bere Island myself and an uncle who once worked those copper mines so it was very interesting to me. Thank you. Was 't there a regular boat service for at least some time between Castletownbere and Bantry? My mother used to talk about the Princess Beara which was the mane of the ship. Carola. What a surprise that you are looking for the Conroy's from Furhir. My husband was William Conroy born in Furhir. William passed away a few weeks ago. He was ill for a long time. There are no more Conroy's living in Ireland they all emigrated to the USA. They settled in California and my family live in Chicago. My husband has only one sibling left alive and she lives in Chicago as well. Would love to know your connection to them. Wendy. {Conroy}
Hello again One suggestion is to start a Facebook page for Beara DNA. There is a similar page for Cork DNA which focuses on the city. There are other groups in the USA who have West Cork connections but they focus on one family who are descendants of one man (the Aomos Collins page springs to mind). At present there is an Allihies FB page and an Allihies - the Copper Road page. Either of these pages could consider hosting the Beara DNA information exchange or a separate Beara DNA page could be launched.Both of the pages mentioned could explain the spread of sporadic matches that people have from Beara to Waterford. There are other explanations but that is one where those experience in mining and transportation followed that route (and some followed the brewing apparently). If interested in finding family links through DNA testing , then you should opt for aautosomal DNA test. These are the Family Finder Test from FTDNA, the 23andme test is an autosomal test and there is the Ancestry Test. here is a link for information purposes only. I have tested with all three but am just a user of these tests and not representative of any company. http://www.myheritage.com/all-dna-tests To share the information those interested could (a) test their autosomal DNA (generally just requires you to spit into a tube) (b) load your results to gedmatch (c) share genealogical information. A spreadsheet of Beara connections/ matches will help and there are free genealogical spreadsheets or tools available for this purpose . Consider setting up a Beara specific DNA project at FTDNA. There is a facility for doing this at Family Tree DNA....just look at there projects page at www.ftdna.org I bought the three volumes of Riobard's Annals of Beara so that is a great help. This will help pool all the work massive done by Riobard O Dwyer, by Bill Gawne and others over the years. It might even help me (and others) to find out the basis of links to the Sullivans, the Downings/Downeys/ Sheehans / Murphys ....and I have matches to all of them. It is a great way to honour our "lost" connections. So, test :-) I hope to get down to the Sheepshead and Beara in April and will have some 23andme and FTDNA kits with me so as to test a few unsuspecting volunteers.
