According to Ancestry's publication, "THE RED BOOK: American State, County & Town Sources", pages 619 through page 635", the first county division took place in 1729, Chester County was divided, forming LANCASTER COUNTY. Between 1729, ad 1781, the counties were divided several times, forming several new counties and reducing the size of the originals. Those formed in the 1700's were: 1750 - LANCASTER from CHESTER; 1749 - YORK from LANCASTER; 1750 - CUMBERLAND from LANCASTER; 1752 - BERKS from CHESTER, LANCASTER & PHILIDELPHIA; 1752 - NORTHAMPTON** from BUCKS; 1771 - BEDFORD from CUMBERLAND; 1772 - NORTHUMBERLAND from BEDFORD, BERKS, CUMBERLAND, LANCASTER, & NORTHAMPTON; 1773 - WESTMORELAND fom BEDFORD; 1781 - WASHINGTON from NORTHUMBERLAND; 1784 - FRANKLIN from CUMBERLAND; 1784 - MONTGOMERY from PHILADELPHIA. One county, ONTARIO was formed in 1810, later renamed as BRADFORD in 1812. Often if a county or parish, even an entire community, was situated on the line between two or more states or territories, it could be absorbed by the other state or territory. As example: GREER COUNTY, OKLAHOMA. It was originally formed in 1860 as YOUNG COUNTY. TEXAS, and organized in 1886. In 1896, it was absorbed by the OKLAHOMA TERRITORY, and renamed as GREER COUNTY, it's county seat being MANGUM. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
