FMMB (112) erroneously assigns to Ninian Beall of Thomas a majority of the information presented here for B-ALEX-22 Ninian Beall of Alexander, including ownership of Friendship Enlarged. FMMB in turn assigns to "Ninian the Elder," whom he erroneously believed to be son of Charles of Col. Ninian, the information presented in this database under Ninian of Thomas. Ninian of Alexander lived in area which became Montgomery County 1776, was Frederick Co unty 1749 and before that was Prince Georges County. Marriage. G1708 (age 21) m. Ruth, family name unknown. (Roberta Hull, Beall News:23) Acc to Thomas Beall (Beall News:12, Sept 1991) Ninian of Alexander m. Elizabeth Gordon however land transactions below indicate it is Ruth who waived dower. Acc to Heterick Elizabeth Gordon was Col. Ninian Beall's wife in Scotland, others deny he had a wife in Scotland. Acc to Heterick, the unknown Ruth was Ruth Beall, daughter of Thomas Hamilton and his wife Ann, named in the 1782 will (PGW T:194) of Thomas Hamilton [b. G1722], which was witnessed by Isaac Walker and Charles Duvall. However, this cannot be; Ruth Beall daughter of Thomas Hamilton would have been b. G1744, or conversely, if Ruth b. G1690 (age 18 at marriage G1708), then Thomas would be b. G1668 (age 22 when Ruth b., and aged over 100 at time of will 1782, an observation also noted by Russell (Charles Beall:100). Roberta Hull: Ruth married Roger Beall, son of Nathaniel, as proved by the wills of her grandfather and uncle, William Scott and Zachariah Scott, PG 1:44B and Tl:23. Ruth and Roger are in the 1776 census. 1749 was the last time Ruth waived dower (Major:218) Land Transactions: 9 Sep 1713 received upper part (Upper Tract) of Friendship Enlarged; 9 Nov 1719 Alexander Beall of P G Co for love and affection gift-deeded to his son Ninian Beall 430 acres of Friendship Enlarged (PGLO F:256-257). Friendship Enlarged (920 acres) had been patented by Alexander Beall in 1716; land was on north side of SW branch of Patuxent River in present Montgomery County. (Russell, Charles Beall, 100). By will of father 1743-1744 inherited parts of Largo (formerly Menella's Quarter, with balance to Ninian's brother William. 17 May 1745 William Beall (B-ALEX-21/G1683) & Ninian Beall of PG Co. convey to John Contee 696 acres of Largo patented to Alexander Beall and William Offutt 7 Dec 1703, now the property of William and Ninian as heirs of Alexander Beall. Elizabeth, wife of William, and Ruth, wife of Ninian, waived dower. 10 Nov 1749 Ninian Beall of Frederick Co, Planter..sells to John Eversfield, Rector of St. Pauls Parish for 71, 204 acres Friendship Enlarged now called Upper Part and the other Enlargement, being the plantation on which William Beall, son of said Ninian Beall now lives lying and being in Fred Co.; wife Ruth waived dower. (PGLO BB1 :306; FCLO B:118; Russell-Charles Beall:100). FMMB attributes this transaction to Ninian of Thomas, and misquotes record to show William as Ninian's nephew, not son. (FMMB:112) FMMB also shows final settlement of estate 1793 of this Ninian and William, sons of Thomas (MCAA C:271, FMMB:112), however it is the sons of Alexander who inherited Friendship Enlarged. 14 Dec 1754 and 25 Mar 1756 Ninian as executor of father Alexander's estate filed accounts (PGAA 36:528, 39:93; Russell- Charles Beall:100) 1755-1756 Ninian Beall, Sr, listed in Frederick County Debt Books for pt Friendship Enlarged (Upper Tract) 322a. 11 Nov 1761 Ninian Beall Sr of Frederick Co, to son Benjamin of Frederick Co. half part of Friendship Enlarged, once in Prince Georges Co but now in Fred Co. (FCLO, C, 309) 22 Jun 1766 Ninian Beall of Fred Co...sells 163 acres of Upper Part, part of Friendship Enlarged (FCLO K:614) After 1766, Friendship Enlarged, also known as Upper Tract, transferred to sons Benjamin & John; resurveyed & renamed Hard Struggle. (Russell, Charles Beall:99) 10 May 1773 James Beall, son of Ninian of Frederick Co, and William Beall, son of Ninian, sign mortgage release. (FCLO S:220, Heterick I:10) 1787 deed lists 5 of the seven sons but not Ninian or Joseph (RH) Military. Furnished beef for Army in French & Indian War of 1757-8. (FMMB:112) Death: Acc to Russell, d. after 1761, however last transaction of Ninian was June 22 1766 (FC Deed Book K:614). Ninian Beall of Thomas went by Ninian Jr until 1772 to distinguish himself from Ninian of Alexander, who was Ninian Sr until his death, & died somewhere between 18 Dec 1771 and 18 Mar 1772. (Roberta Hull, Virginia Beall Kurtz). Final settlement of estate Rockville, 1793 (MCAA C:271; FMMB:112) (Thomas E Beall Jr, 1942; Beall News:5) Children: Roberta Hull (BGN:23) and Mrs. Alfred Kurtz (AK) list 7 children, in the following order: 1. Ninian of Ninian, b. G1714, whose name appears either as Ninian of Ninian, or Ninian, innkeeper, m. Mary (daughter of Charles Beall and Mary) and had 2 sons and daughters. d. Mo Co 1790, leaving will. Had the 200a of Dispute that Charles willed to Mary Beall, acc to 1750 rent rolls (RH) FMMB has Ninian of Ninian of Thomas b. 1724, m. Ruth Hamilton (+B-ALEX-227/G1714). 2. Robert, b. 1715 d. testate 1788; 9 ch? Hannah survived. Records indicate Hannah was daughter of John Beall and Verlinda Magruder; names of children also suggest this was so. (RH) (+B-ALEX-228/1715). 3. Benjamin, b. 1710, m. B-NIN-124 Mary Edmonston, dau of James and Mary Beall Edmonston, b. G1733 (+B-ALEX-223/1710) FMMB has Benjamin of Thomas b. 1704, m. Mary (FMMB has Sarah Magruder as Benjamin's second wife; for Benjamin who m. Sarah Magruder, daug of Samuel Magruder III, see B-SR-14/1729) Wrote will F Co 1764, d. before 1 Jul 1765. 4 children, all minors in 1778. 4. James, of Bennetts Creek, b. 1713, m. Ann Pottenger; no children. (+B-ALEX-226/1713). (FMMB has James of Ninian of Thomas b. 1709, m. Elizabeth Pooly) Will, 1778, Montg Co, prov 1780, names wife, children of Benjamin & John, also Robert. 5. John, of Bennetts Creek, b. 1728 (Hull/Census 1776; FMMB & Heterick = 1712), m. Mary. (+B-ALEX-225/1712). Do not confuse with B- ALEX-237/1728, John Beall of John, who also m. Mary. D. after census of 1776 and before brother wrote will in 1778. 6. William, b. ca 1710, m. Sarah Magruder, dau of Ninian Magruder and Elizabeth Brewer. (Roberta Hull, BGN:23; FMMB has Mary) Referred to himself as "William Beall of Ninian" and lived on Friendship Enlarged in 1749. FMMB confuses with William of Ninian of Thomas b. 1720. Also confused with William of Thomas, who refers to himself as "William, Jr." (+B-ALEX-221/1710). 7. Joseph, b. 1717, m (1) Elizabeth Hawkins, (2) Rachel. widow of Joseph Howard. FMMB has Joseph of Ninian of Thomas b. 1715, m. Henrietta, however, the Joseph who married Henrietta was the son of the James of the will probated 1795 (RH) (+B-ALEX-229/1717). Other sources list additional children without documentation. 8. Andrew Beall. Heterick (I:10) lists the 7 sons above plus Andrew Beall, b. 1721. There is in fact an Andrew, but no documentation that he is son of Ninian. (+B-ALEX-22a/1721) FMMB (112) names 10 children for Ninian of Thomas, however this appears to be a different family FMMB also names 2 daughters, Mary Ann (b. 1706) and Margery (b. 1711) . These, however, are daughters of Ninian of Thomas, whose will lists Mary Price, wife of Benoni, and Margery Brown, wife of Zachariah. FMMB also adds a Basil to the children of Ninian of Alexander. Since FMMB also shows a Basil of Ninian of Thomas b. 1717, I have consolidated Basil at B-THOMAS-57). RH notes however that Ninian of Thomas' 1780 will doesn't list a son Basil. Thomas Beall names 6 sons (TB above), plus Andrew and mentions 7 unnamed daughters. Donna Russell (Charles Beall:100) lists the 7 sons above plus Richard , to whom John Adamson gave land. RH believes Russell misread Jr as Sr in order to make such an assignment. It was Richard, son of B-SR-1 Ninian Jr/Sr (1696-1780) who was son-in-law of John Adamson. (+B-SR- 16/1735)
