-- [ From: Jackson H. Day * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Genealogy 6 has found an interesting tidbit -- an Elisha Beall who was a "Commissioner" (of what?) in Frederick County in 1812 at the time William Purdy inherited Joseph's Advantage, part of William and Elizabeth. Was it County Commissioner? What kind of Commissiner witnessed land transfers by inheritance. If we knew that, we might know more about this Elisha, and the county records in which we could find his term of office. At this point we know he was alive in Frederick County, and presumably prominent. Here are the Elisha's I could find who might have been alive in 1812 in Frederick County. While my codes may not mean much to you, referring back to it in discussion may help me keep track of who we're talking about. The codes contain the individual's ancestry as I know it. B-ALEX-212-3 Elisha Beall b. 1745 of Nathaniel (1715) lived Urbana Area. 1775 Committee of Observation, collected fines. 1st Lieutenant. m. Jane Perry. Will 1831. Elisha Beall (B-ALEX-349??) in 1821 sells Manymaker One on s. edge of Bennetts Creek because he has moved to Kentucky. B-ALEX-221-56, Elisha Beall b. 1768 of Mordecai (1742) B-WILSIMP-112 Elisha Beall b. 1800 of William Simpson, b. 1776. Associated with Trouble Enough and Close Tract, resurveys on Long Lookt For, near Bennetts Creek. Too young to be commissioner in 1812. This Elisha Beall's granddaughter Survila Ann Beall married Jackson Day, b. 1831, my great-grandfather. An Elisha Beall was registered to vote in 1796. Could be any of these. Elisha Beall, b. G1804, of Eli, nephew of Nathaniel. B-WILSIMP-24 Elisha Beall b.G1793 of John (G1740-1743). This Elisha was a first cousin of William Simpson, above. B-NIN-111-6 Elisha, b. G1802 of Samuel (G1734) m. Elizabeth Perry. associated with Batchelors Forest -- located about 2/3 of way between Rockville and Olney) and James Gift. Fielder M M. Beall mixes this Elisha up with my ancestor Elisha, noted above. Wish it were true, the code tells you this Elisha is a great-grandson of Col. Ninian Beall. B-ALEX-274 Elisha Beall, b. G1740. Grandson of Alexander Beall, Immigrant, of Alexander of Scotland. Associated with Duvall's Forst in Ijamsville area. Built old stone mansion in 1810, had big family. If I had to bet, I'd guess the Elisha who was Commissioner was either B- ALEX-212-3/1745, or B-ALEX-274/G1740. Both were alive in 1812, wealthy, prominent, and at age 67 and 72 respectively, presumably had passed their active plantation duties on to a younger generation by the time. Jack Day
Dennis, When I saw your query Re: CALVERTS of Baltimore & Maryland I remember reading something in "THE ROYAL DESCENTS of 500 IMMIGRANTS to the American Colonies or the United States" by Gary Boyd Roberts (RD500) Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202 that might interest you! On pg. 9 shown as descent from 1. Charles 11, King of England, d. 1685=Catherineo Braganza; 2. Among the children of Benedict and Elizabeth, Eleanor CALVERT married 1st John Parke Custis, stepson of George Washington, 1st President of the United States and son of Daniel Parke Custis and Martha Dandridge. Benedict was according to NEHGR 104(1950):175, the son of Melusina de Schulenberg, Countess of Walsingham and wife of Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, man of letters, illegitimate daughter of George 1, King of Great Britain, d. 1727 and Ermengarde Melusina de Schulengerg, Duchess of Kendal. (the above is not & exact copy of the page & does not include the sources listed on that page. The emphasis on CALVERT was mine , not the author. I made a further check on Anne CALVERT in the NEHGS Register, Vol 112, pg 236 There is an Anne CALVERT of Maryland m. Thomas Rolt at Fleet St., London, 8 may 1731. Although some sources indicate she is illegimate (natural daughter) after Lord Baltimore separated from his wife in 1705. There are further references to Royal connections. I am sorry I don't have time to pursue this further, but I hope it may have given you sme leads or at least a little more on the CALVERTS of Baltimore. I am sure there is much more out there but I just had time for one quick dip into the references. Sorry I can't take time todo more. I am behind on my own research on my BEAL lines in New England. Hi folks: Wondering if anybody out there has devoted some time and effort to researching the connection between Col. Ninian Beall and the Calvert family of Lord Baltimore fame. I note with interest that Ninian was born in Fife, Scotland in 1625, the son of Dr. James Bell and Anne Maria (or Marie) Calvert. I haven't been able to find out anything so far about Anne Maria Calvert but I strongly suspect that she was a member of the same batch of Calverts who produced the Lords Baltimore. The earliest I've been able to find is one John Calvert of Yorkshire in the 1500s, found of the Calvert family as far as I cane make out. The family later scattered all over northern England (perhaps southern Scotland as well?) then south to London and into history. I'v e traced a few Anne Calverts, but none of them appear to be Ninian's mother. If Ninian's mom did come from the Lord Baltimore Calverts, it sure would explain how he rose like a rocket in Maryland affairs after arriving from Barbados as an indentured carpenter owned by a Quaker named Hall. Anybody out there have any further thoughts or leads? Thanks in advance, dennis bell (of the Largo, Fife Bells) burnaby, bc canada

-- [ From: Jackson H. Day * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Expanded recipient data: To: Sigtaba \ America On-Line: (sigtaba) Laura, I've wondered myself whether a list of the people who came over with Nathaniel Taylor existed, but haven't seen a reference to one--and don't have one myself. It would be quite a coup to get it! Unfortunately, It was only up through 1680 that you got 50 acres of land for everyone you transported over. Interestingly, I just looked in Skordas book of the early Maryland land grant recipients, and Coldham's series which follows that, and there is no Nathaniel Taylor listed. Perhaps as a clergyman he wasn't interested in property, but there were certainly many in those days who were! Just discovered that the RootsWeb Email Lists for 97 and 98 are now searchable by keyword. If you're new to the list, it's a good idea to start here for many of the "list-historical" queries like: *finding any one of the numerous Ninian Bealls *finding the relatives of the MA Beals *finding info about John Yates Beall, "Confederate Spy" *Pottengers? *Who publishes the Beall Genealogical News and lots of other good stuff on the Beall's, Beal's, Beale's, etc. If you've been on the list a while, it's a bonus as well. The URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/ and go from there. I've put a link in my Web site for the Sims List, but all you need to do is to change the name of the list to Beall to get you to the right place at http://www.world.std.com/~lsimms/links.html
Does anyone out there have any information on John Yates Beall's family line? I am looking for his parent's name and background and possibly his siblings. There is a wealth of information about what a colorful character he was, but I'm desperate to locate his family. Any info would be enormously appreciated. Thanks, Debbie RDavenp606@aol.com
I am trying to find more information on T. T. Beall, born in GA possibly between 1806 and 1810. I don't know when he moved to Mississippi. In the 1860 Copiah Co., MS census records there is a T. G. Bell, age 52, wife Martha, age 40, children: Victoria - 18, Martha - 12, Elizabeth - 10, Thomas - 9, Henry (my line) - 8, Otho - 3. In the 1870 Clairborn Co., MS census records there is a T. T. Beall - 64, wife Martha - 51, Children: Thomas - 16, Henry (my line) - 15, Otho - 13, Mary - 8. In the 1880 Copiah Co., MS census records there is a T. T. Beall - 70, H. O. (Henry O., my line) - 25 and M. R. (Mary R.) - 17. I do not know the parents of T. T. Beall, nor his wife's last name. Any help would be greatly appreciated. betty
Hi all - Would anyone out there have information about the Revultionary service of Jonathan Bales (son of Caleb and Mary) b. in York County, PA 3-22-1761. Search microfilm at our State Library and did not find a copy of a Pension record for him. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sue Houchin taffycat@aol.com
Dear Mr. Day (and all other Beall searchers), You mentioned 25 families that Rev Nathaniel Taylor brought with him to Maryland. Do you happen to have a list of those families, or know where I might find one? I'd love to know of it! I've also been trying to find a list of the 200 Scots that Ninian Beall brought over, but haven't found that one yet, either. Do you know if such a list exists? Thanks so much. Laura
-- [ From: Jackson H. Day * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Laurie Ann Kozelka Bieber asks the line connecting Mary Beall to Ninian. Alas, there probably is not any such line. My best authorities have Mary as someone who came over on a ship arranged by Ninian Beall for his 'kinfolk' . In this case we don't know the relationship, although they were contemporaries. Here's my database entry for Mary: B-SIS-2. Mary Beall, b. Scotland 1660 (or 1658), d. PGC 1720. m. ca 1685 or 1686 John Pottenger, b. 17 Jul 1662, d. 7 Apr 1735 (Robert Sherwood (TXFP92A) Silver Spring) in Collington Branch, Queen Anne's Parish, MD (Bieber). She apparently came to PG Co, MD from Scotland. John Pottenger was son of Henry Potynger, b. 1629 and Sarah Stanton. Henry in turn was son of Richard II, son of Richard Potynger, son of John Potynger, b. ca 1540. (H. Anne Whiteman (RVWN63A) Northridge, CA) (John Pottinger also m. Elizabeth Magruder, dau of Alexander, b. Jan 1676/7. (Carolyn Collins (NVXJ48A) Indiana) (10 children) John Pottinger was associated with Major's Lott, PGC, which is mentioned in his will. It is estimated that a Sarah Bell and a Mary Bell appeared about this time in now Prince Georges County, and that they came with these above mentioned 25 families that came with the Rev. Nathaniel Taylor" Apparently Col. Ninian Beall help to finance Rev. Taylor's building of a church, giving him land in Upper Marlboro, and ordering a silver service. "The Rev. Taylor was fully equipped to carry out Ninian's desire, expressed in the deed for the lot, to wit: "For ye propagation of ye Gospel of Jesus Christ". Suggest you contact the BEALL FAMILY ASSOC., P.O. Box 33918, Portland, Oregon for more information. They also have a very good detailed BEALL NEWSLETTER that covers BEALL, BEALE, BEALS, BEAL, BEEL, BELL, ETC. They also sell indices for the BEALL surname. I provide this because my mention of the BEALL Family Association in a recent reply generated some E-mail messages for this address. They also can provide some back copies of their newsletter. They do not have E-mail although I have suggested it. I suspect they prefer the method they are currently using. I believe their prices & membership is quite fair! I am a descendant of the York, ME Beal family & only track the other BEALL surname when I have some spare time, which isn't often! You may use my name as a reference if you wish to do so. Hi Folks, I'm just getting nicely started on this couple and I'm looking for the "quick hits" of people who know they are descendants. Ninian BEALL, died 1717 MD, married Ruth MOORE, daughter of Robert and Jane MOORE. Without trying, I've found 4 cousin-researchers this week. Either the stars are right or this is a really prolific family (with a bent toward genealogy!) I'd like to collect all the descendants and pool our information. Any takers? In a message dated 98-03-18 11:05:53 EST, you write: << dhettrick@earthlink.net >> Try back issues of BEALL-Digest V98 There is also plenty of data in the news letters from the BEALL Association. I would be pleased to furnish the address if you are interested Chuck,
HI all... I've gathered my Beall info (mostly) from other's on the web as I haven't had time to document them myself. But, I'd LOVE to know where to look for the correct info & WHO the parents are (and the line up to WHICH NINIAN) of my Mary Beall & John Pottenger/Pottinger. Here's what I have so far. Could someone please give me information on the family line of John Yates Beall? I am interested in finding out who his parents were and possibly who his siblings were. Mr Jackson Day, Thank you for the good information. I will save it. I am "on the trail" of a Warman(Welman) connection to Bealls. Mary Warman a decendent of Ninian Beall m. John Watkins 1715. Well after looking at your files I am interested in the name "Verlinda". It is such an unusual name so I don't see it much. However I have a Verlinda ROBY b. 25Sept1760-11Aug1847 who m. 1783 Stephen WARMAN d. 1789. I believe she was the dau. of Thomas ROBY who d. aft 1783 and Dorothy who also d. aft. 1783. Does any of the above have any meaning to you? In Logan's book "History of the Upper Country of South Carolina" in given the story of how the Captains mother, name not given so I have chosen to call her "Grandma Beal", was robbed and wounded by the Tory "Bloody Bill Cunningham". The Captain on hearing this set out after bloody Bill. When he caught up to bloody Bill, the Tory shot the Captains horse out from under him. In the South Carolina "Indents" the Captain put in for a request to be paid "for a horse lost in the service of his country".
