    1. [BEALL-L] Re: BEALL-D Digest V98 #89
    2. MR JACKSON H DAY
    3. -- [ From: Jackson H. Day * EMC.Ver #3.1a INTERNATIONAL ] -- Jean, I looked at the information you sent regarding Andrew J, orphan of a William Beall, and decided that if he was the youngest son, his father was probably married in 1808 and born about 1787, and if he was the oldest son, his father was probably married in 1814 and born about 1793. Then I looked in the 1780-1800 portion of my database of Maryland Bealls. I discovered that I already had an entry about this William, sent by a Virginia C. Tuttle in Marietta, Georgia. You may already know her: UPSONGA William Beall, b. G1787, m. G1808, d. ca 1818-1820, leaving son Andrew J. an orphan. Great-great-great granddaughter of William: Virginia C. Tuttle, 761 Prince Ave, Marietta, GA 30062 1. William, b. G1809 2. James, b. G1811 3. Elijah, b. G1813 4. Andrew J., b. 13 Apr 1815 (+) Doing a search on Williams in the same time period, I also found the following. This is a later entry, but is still possible. I have no other information, but if he was a General he should have left some tracks somewhere. The code tells me that he is in the mainstream of descendants of Alexander Beall, Immigrant, (B-ALEX-2), son of Alexander of Scotland (B-ALEX). There were also other Williams who were contemporary: William of Nathan went to Kentucky, William of Philip to Jefferson Co, Ohio, General William of Thaddeus to Guilford Co, NC, William of Evan to Carolina. B-ALEX-232-112 General William Beall, b. 20 Feb 1793/5, of General Frederick [1768] d. 22 Aug 1851. Lived Georgia. Do let me know how the research turns out!

    3. Abstract of Deed, Book H, Upson County, Georgia, recorded March 28, 1857, and dated January 2, 1855, shows Andrew J. Beall/Bell was a resident of Chambers County, Alabama. He was born in North Carolina on April 13, 1815. According to Jackson County, Georgia, early court records, "Minutes of Court of Ordinary, 1800-1822; he was orphaned by the age of seven. The minutes, dated November 1821, read "ordered that Andrew Bell orphan son of William Bell deceased be bound to Aaron Tillman until he shall arrive to the age of twenty one years, he being of the age of seven years on the 13th of April next - the said A. Tillman to have said orphan taught to read and write and the common rules of arithmetic. Ex'd. Andrew had three brothers: William, James and Elijah. These orphans drew land in Georgia's 1832 Gold Lottery. The Tax Digest of Upson County, Georgia, dated 1834 and 1836/37 show A. J. Bell paid taxes on forty acres in Sec 4, Dist 16, Lot 378. According to Harris County records this land was sold on March 1, 1849, by William Bell, James Bell and Elijah Bell to William Powell. Andrew married Luraney/Lurana/Lorena DeLoach b. about 1820, in Upson County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Joseph and Louisa "Leacy"(nee Johnson) DeLoach. The marriage occurred on January 17, 1837, in Upson County, Georgia. Does anyone know anything about this family? I don't know which William Beall was the father nor do I know the mother's name. Thank you, Jean Bell Martin

    3. I'm checking to see if anyone knows of any relatives for Robert S. Beall b. cir. 1885 somewhere Texas. I have searched all the 1900 Texas census and can't find his parents. He show's up on the Colorado 1910 census, and it states that he was born in Texas and his parents came from England. Distant relatives believe that he had two brothers. 3. Oops, should mention that there are few, if any, Web Links in my database. The format is set up for Sims researchers who can access Descendant reports and GEDCOMs from my Sims page. The only Beall GEDCOM available is my zipped Beall GEDCOM...which isn't too far out of date. The only reason the file is so large is that I've got a James and a Basil and Ninian in my family. Had to go the full Beall route to figure out where these men fit in.

    3. Hi All, I've been pretty quiet lately...because one of my primary Beall sources, Jack Day, is now on the list. I'm letting him field the answers in which I would cite him and his execellent work. Truth is, once Jack entered the list, I refocused on the Simms, so I haven't been paying much attention. I collect info on the Sims/Simms family and compiled a fairly comprehensive database which I've now published on the Web. For grins, I added the Beall info which I've aggregated from the Beall Genealogical News, Jack's database, the Broderbund Census CD-ROMs and other wanderings about the Web over the past few years. (Note: don't even bother with the Brod. Beall families unless it's pretty clear that they've logged their families in the mid-1800's because it's likely that they've misidentified their older Beall links.) The database is pretty neat, if I do say so myself, because it's "global" view of the Bealls. A global view is less pertinent to the Bealls because of the similar naming conventions as we all know, but it's worth a look. As to accuracy, you can email me about any info. While I must take responsibility for publishing my data on the Web, I also must admit I'm just an aggregator and not much of a researcher....even in my own Beall family whose origins remain unproven. For this wacky family, I need outside expertise upon which I rely. I'm in the process of moving all my pages to another site, but you can reach the Beall search page at http://people.ne.mediaone.net/lsimms/beall0.html Hope it helps, Lisa Simms Surnames of Greatest Interest--Simms, Beall, Horrocks, Clark, Wright For now.... 2. Beverly Bates
    3. >From "To Maryland from Overseas," by Harry Wright Newman, Baltimore, 1986 Page 21 BEALL. Members of the Beall family, that is, Ninian, Thomas, Alexander, James and Robert, were natives of St. Andrew's Parish, Fifeshire, Scotland, where their births or baptisms are registered in the parish archives. The naming of their Maryland plantations also attested to their Scottish heritage. The Scottish spelling was "Bell" and was so used in early Maryland records. Why "a" was inserted is unknown, but after the first generation Beall was consistently used by all members of the family. The Scottish research was conducted by the late Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone and phonograph, although he was not a scion of the Fifeshire. (REF. Research by Alexander Graham Bell at the Library of Congress; Parish Register of St. Andrew's, Fifeshire, Registration House, Edinburgh.)

COMBS was b ca1662, ten years earlier than the 1672 est. by Fannie COMBS Gough (See Combs Manuscripts), and "technically" too early to have been son of Enoch and Barbary COMBS I... (another subject entirely <g>) Dear Carole, I received that transcribed deposition from a different person, and and assumed it to be correct. After your remarkes I thought the best thing to do was to find the book "Abstracts of CHANCERY COURT RECORDS of Maryland 1669-1782 by Debbie Hooper and check every word to see if there were any transcription errors. Well, I guess I should have done that long ago, because since the age of 59 years of William Combs is what I thought it had said, until I checked. Here is exactly how it is written: Abstracts of CHANCERY COURT RECORDS of Maryland, 1669-1782,by Debbie Hooper, Family Line Publications, Westminster, Maryland 21157, 1996: Page 39: 3 Aug 1717. Depositions taken regarding the birth and lineage of Edmund Plowden and Brent Nuthall of St. Mary's Co. (1) Rev. Mr. Nicholas Gulick, age ca. 70, that some 24 years ago he married John Nuthall, Jr. of St. Mary's Co. and Miss Mary Brent of Stafford Co., Virginia. (Liber CL, p. 362). 3 Aug 1717. Deposition of Susan Evans, age. ca. 65, that 20 years ago this October, she was sent for as a midwife to Mrs. Mary Brent, sister to Margarett Brent and wife to John Nutthall, Jr., at the house of said Nuthall. She delivered a male child who is now known by the name of Brent Nuthall. The deponent always understood that Mary Brent was the wife of John Nuthall, and that Margaret Brent was the wife of George Plowden, late of St. Mary's Co. Both of them were sisters of William Brent of Stafford Co., Virginia, who lately died in Great Britain. The deponent further states that Brent Nuthall is the only surviving son of Mrs. Mary Brent. (Liber CL, p. 363). Page 49 and 50: 8 Oct 1721. Deposition taken regarding the right of Brent Nuthall to title of a tract in St. Mary's Co. called Crop Mannor. (1) Robert Clarke of St. Mary's Co., age ca. 71, that he very well knew John Nuthall the elder, the grandfather of Brent Nuthall, and that he and the deponent were the same age, except that said John was as much older than the deponent as March til November. The deponent would be 71 on the fifth of November next. (2) Levina Twisden of St. Mary's Co., age ca. 71, that she knew John Nuthall, the great-grandfather of Brent Nuthall and father of John Nuthall, the grandfather of said Brent Nuthall. John the great-grandfather lived on land called Crop Mannor about 54 years ago, when she came to this country, and where he died about 53 years ago last July. (3) William Combs of St. Mary's Co., ca. 50. (4) Charles Calvert of St. Mary's Co., Gent., age ca. 59, who was son of William Calvert. (Liber CL, p. 748-750). William Combs date of Birth is 50 years old from 1721 meaning Fanny Gough's research is correct and there is no other William Combs born 1662. the date of 59 years old was a transcription error. William Combs mentioned above was most definitely the son of Enoch Combs Sr. and Barbara______, Not only does my research prove that as fact, but so does Fanny Gough's research, and she used Bible records, Land records, and wills, not to mentioned personal testomonies from those who were direct decendants. I find very few errors with Fanny Gough's research if any. Those that I may not as yet agree with are not errors yet, until proven as such. It is not hearsay. William Combs recieved the land that his father Enoch Combs Sr. earlier recieved from Richard Banks. William Combs also named his eldest son Enoch Combs after his Father and his older brother Enoch Combs Jr. That certainly was not just by chance, it was for a reason. You'll be waisting your time to try to proove otherwise. Sorry my original Transcription contained that error, which has caused all this confusion in the first place. I might also mention Carole that the discussion of why and how we know Enoch Combs Jr. was married before his marriage to Sarah Sprigg, I have already discussed with you and showed you documented reasons for that. Perhaps you should refer back to that discussion as it was explained to you before. Sarah Sprigg(Combs) was not the mother of Barbara Combs who married James Magruder. The Magruder history gives a circa date of birth of James Magruder as 1685. Look back in the previous Postings by Carolyn Wimp. If Barbara Combs was born in 1704 as someone posted recently that would mean someone has the wrong information. If James Magruder was born abt 1685 he would be age 20 by 1705, just about the right age to be married, but if Barbara Combs was born 1704, then he would have to wait until she was old enough to marry. Even at age 15 years old that means the earliest a marriage might have been consumated would be abt 1720. I think you will discover they were already married before that. Sarah Sprigg married 1st to John Pearce(Peerce) and was still a widow of 1st husband in 1704. Refer to her fathers will which mentions his daughter Sarah Peerce dated 1704. That means Enoch Combs Jr. married her after 1704, but before 1726/27 when he is known to have died. As far as other children none are documented. Enoch Combs Jr. and his Father Enoch Combs Sr. left very few records in order to document who all their children were. But if Barbara Combs was a daughter of Enoch Combs Jr. then her mother was someone we know nothing yet about and Enoch Combs Jr. had to have been married before, at least once before to have a daughter Barbara Combs(Magruder). Barbara Combs that married James Magruder was born too late to be a daughter of Enoch Combs Sr. All of these land records Below are that of Enoch Combs Jr. not Sr. Land Records of Prince George's County, 1726-1730 Folio 51/583 Indenture, 22 Jan 1717 From: Daniel Danielson, Planter, and Thomas Sprigg, Gent., both of Prince George's County To: Enoch Coombs of Prince George's County 29 May 1710 Daniel Danielson sold Thomas Sprigg a parcel of land called Norway, part of a larger tract called Largo; bounded by land belonging to Robert Wells called Westphalia and land of Thomas Sprigg; containing 250 acres /s/ Daniel Danielson (seal) Thomas Sprigg(seal) wit: Thomas Claggett, Jos. It is obvious that the clerk recording this did not know how to Spell, because John Peere and John Poores was the same individual as John Pearce Or Peerce son of Sarah Sprigg Pearce(Combs). Sarah Sprigg married 1st to John Pearce. It is well documented that Sarah Sprigg was the daughter of Thomas Sprigg and 1st wife Katheryn Graves, and That Sarah Sprigg (Pearce) had a son named John Pearce named after his Father John Pearce, and she also had a daughter Sarah Pearce named after her mother Sarah Sprigg (Pearce). Sarah Pearce the daughter was born abt 1677, Calvert County, Maryland she died before 28 Nov 1761, Prince George's County, Maryland. The Daughter (Sarah Pearce) married about 1693(Beall), op. cit., p. 149, James Be(a)ll, Sr. , son of Alexander and Margret Ramsey (Bell)(Beall), of St. Andrews Scotland. FMMB (112) erroneously assigns to Ninian Beall of Thomas a majority of the information presented here for B-ALEX-22 Ninian Beall of Alexander, including ownership of Friendship Enlarged. FMMB in turn assigns to "Ninian the Elder," whom he erroneously believed to be son of Charles of Col. Ninian, the information presented in this database under Ninian of Thomas. Ninian of Alexander lived in area which became Montgomery County 1776, was Frederick Co unty 1749 and before that was Prince Georges County. Marriage. G1708 (age 21) m. Ruth, family name unknown. (Roberta Hull, Beall News:23) Acc to Thomas Beall (Beall News:12, Sept 1991) Ninian of Alexander m. Elizabeth Gordon however land transactions below indicate it is Ruth who waived dower. Acc to Heterick Elizabeth Gordon was Col. Ninian Beall's wife in Scotland, others deny he had a wife in Scotland. Acc to Heterick, the unknown Ruth was Ruth Beall, daughter of Thomas Hamilton and his wife Ann, named in the 1782 will (PGW T:194) of Thomas Hamilton [b. G1722], which was witnessed by Isaac Walker and Charles Duvall. However, this cannot be; Ruth Beall daughter of Thomas Hamilton would have been b. G1744, or conversely, if Ruth b. G1690 (age 18 at marriage G1708), then Thomas would be b. G1668 (age 22 when Ruth b., and aged over 100 at time of will 1782, an observation also noted by Russell (Charles Beall:100). Roberta Hull: Ruth married Roger Beall, son of Nathaniel, as proved by the wills of her grandfather and uncle, William Scott and Zachariah Scott, PG 1:44B and Tl:23. Ruth and Roger are in the 1776 census. 1749 was the last time Ruth waived dower (Major:218) Land Transactions: 9 Sep 1713 received upper part (Upper Tract) of Friendship Enlarged; 9 Nov 1719 Alexander Beall of P G Co for love and affection gift-deeded to his son Ninian Beall 430 acres of Friendship Enlarged (PGLO F:256-257). Friendship Enlarged (920 acres) had been patented by Alexander Beall in 1716; land was on north side of SW branch of Patuxent River in present Montgomery County. (Russell, Charles Beall, 100). By will of father 1743-1744 inherited parts of Largo (formerly Menella's Quarter, with balance to Ninian's brother William. 17 May 1745 William Beall (B-ALEX-21/G1683) & Ninian Beall of PG Co. convey to John Contee 696 acres of Largo patented to Alexander Beall and William Offutt 7 Dec 1703, now the property of William and Ninian as heirs of Alexander Beall. Elizabeth, wife of William, and Ruth, wife of Ninian, waived dower. 10 Nov 1749 Ninian Beall of Frederick Co, Planter..sells to John Eversfield, Rector of St. Pauls Parish for 71, 204 acres Friendship Enlarged now called Upper Part and the other Enlargement, being the plantation on which William Beall, son of said Ninian Beall now lives lying and being in Fred Co.; wife Ruth waived dower. (PGLO BB1 :306; FCLO B:118; Russell-Charles Beall:100). FMMB attributes this transaction to Ninian of Thomas, and misquotes record to show William as Ninian's nephew, not son. (FMMB:112) FMMB also shows final settlement of estate 1793 of this Ninian and William, sons of Thomas (MCAA C:271, FMMB:112), however it is the sons of Alexander who inherited Friendship Enlarged. 14 Dec 1754 and 25 Mar 1756 Ninian as executor of father Alexander's estate filed accounts (PGAA 36:528, 39:93; Russell- Charles Beall:100) 1755-1756 Ninian Beall, Sr, listed in Frederick County Debt Books for pt Friendship Enlarged (Upper Tract) 322a. 11 Nov 1761 Ninian Beall Sr of Frederick Co, to son Benjamin of Frederick Co. half part of Friendship Enlarged, once in Prince Georges Co but now in Fred Co. (FCLO, C, 309) 22 Jun 1766 Ninian Beall of Fred Co...sells 163 acres of Upper Part, part of Friendship Enlarged (FCLO K:614) After 1766, Friendship Enlarged, also known as Upper Tract, transferred to sons Benjamin & John; resurveyed & renamed Hard Struggle. (Russell, Charles Beall:99) 10 May 1773 James Beall, son of Ninian of Frederick Co, and William Beall, son of Ninian, sign mortgage release. (FCLO S:220, Heterick I:10) 1787 deed lists 5 of the seven sons but not Ninian or Joseph (RH) Military. Furnished beef for Army in French & Indian War of 1757-8. (FMMB:112) Death: Acc to Russell, d. after 1761, however last transaction of Ninian was June 22 1766 (FC Deed Book K:614). Ninian Beall of Thomas went by Ninian Jr until 1772 to distinguish himself from Ninian of Alexander, who was Ninian Sr until his death, & died somewhere between 18 Dec 1771 and 18 Mar 1772. (Roberta Hull, Virginia Beall Kurtz). Final settlement of estate Rockville, 1793 (MCAA C:271; FMMB:112) (Thomas E Beall Jr, 1942; Beall News:5) Children: Roberta Hull (BGN:23) and Mrs. Alfred Kurtz (AK) list 7 children, in the following order: 1. Ninian of Ninian, b. G1714, whose name appears either as Ninian of Ninian, or Ninian, innkeeper, m. Mary (daughter of Charles Beall and Mary) and had 2 sons and daughters. d. Mo Co 1790, leaving will. Had the 200a of Dispute that Charles willed to Mary Beall, acc to 1750 rent rolls (RH) FMMB has Ninian of Ninian of Thomas b. 1724, m. Ruth Hamilton (+B-ALEX-227/G1714). 2. Robert, b. 1715 d. testate 1788; 9 ch? Hannah survived. Records indicate Hannah was daughter of John Beall and Verlinda Magruder; names of children also suggest this was so. (RH) (+B-ALEX-228/1715). 3. Benjamin, b. 1710, m. B-NIN-124 Mary Edmonston, dau of James and Mary Beall Edmonston, b. G1733 (+B-ALEX-223/1710) FMMB has Benjamin of Thomas b. 1704, m. Sarah Magruder, daug of Samuel Magruder III, see B-SR-14/1729) Wrote will F Co 1764, d. before 1 Jul 1765. 4 children, all minors in 1778. 4. James, of Bennetts Creek, b. 1713, m. Ann Pottenger; no children. (+B-ALEX-226/1713). (FMMB has James of Ninian of Thomas b. 1709, m. Elizabeth Pooly) Will, 1778, Montg Co, prov 1780, names wife, children of Benjamin & John, also Robert. 5. John, of Bennetts Creek, b. 1728 (Hull/Census 1776; FMMB & Heterick = 1712), m. Mary. (+B-ALEX-225/1712). Do not confuse with B- ALEX-237/1728, John Beall of John, who also m. Mary. D. after census of 1776 and before brother wrote will in 1778. 6. William, b. ca 1710, m. Sarah Magruder, dau of Ninian Magruder and Elizabeth Brewer. (Roberta Hull, BGN:23; FMMB has Mary) Referred to himself as "William Beall of Ninian" and lived on Friendship Enlarged in 1749. FMMB confuses with William of Ninian of Thomas b. 1720. Also confused with William of Thomas, who refers to himself as "William, Jr." (+B-ALEX-221/1710). 7. Joseph, b. 1717, m (1) Elizabeth Hawkins, (2) Rachel. widow of Joseph Howard. FMMB has Joseph of Ninian of Thomas b. 1715, m. Henrietta, however, the Joseph who married Henrietta was the son of the James of the will probated 1795 (RH) (+B-ALEX-229/1717). Other sources list additional children without documentation. 8. Andrew Beall. Heterick (I:10) lists the 7 sons above plus Andrew Beall, b. 1721. There is in fact an Andrew, but no documentation that he is son of Ninian. (+B-ALEX-22a/1721) FMMB (112) names 10 children for Ninian of Thomas, however this appears to be a different family FMMB also names 2 daughters, Mary Ann (b. 1706) and Margery (b. 1711) . These, however, are daughters of Ninian of Thomas, whose will lists Mary Price, wife of Benoni, and Margery Brown, wife of Zachariah. FMMB also adds a Basil to the children of Ninian of Alexander. Since FMMB also shows a Basil of Ninian of Thomas b. 1717, I have consolidated Basil at B-THOMAS-57). RH notes however that Ninian of Thomas' 1780 will doesn't list a son Basil. Thomas Beall names 6 sons (TB above), plus Andrew and mentions 7 unnamed daughters. Donna Russell (Charles Beall:100) lists the 7 sons above plus Richard , to whom John Adamson gave land. RH believes Russell misread Jr as Sr in order to make such an assignment. It was Richard, son of B-SR-1 Ninian Jr/Sr (1696-1780) who was son-in-law of John Adamson. (+B-SR- 16/1735)

1749 was the last time Ruth waived dower (Major:218) Land Transactions: 9 Sep 1713 received upper part (Upper Tract) of Friendship Enlarged; 9 Nov 1719 Alexander Beall of P G Co for love and affection gift-deeded t@ _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
