    3. Thank you Carrie, That is very interesting. I have some answers on my question about the Three Sarah BEALLS. Greg says that this is well known info: Samuel Magruder, who married Sarah BEALL, was b. in 1654 in Prince Geroges County, MD. He d. three on April 16, 1711. His wife Sarah was b. about 1658 in Scotland, and d. in Prince Georges County in 1734. She was the sister of Mary BEALL who m. John Pottenger. There was another Sarah BEALL who was b. in 1636 who was the sister of Ninian. she may have been the one who m. my Frances WATTS. Ninian did not have a dau. Sarah by his second marriage. In fact some prof. genealogists are certain that the Col. Ninian BEALL only was m. in America to Ruth MOORE and was not the same Ninian who m. Elizabeth GORDON. Bill BEALL of the BEALL Genealogical News was said to say that Col. Ninian was not the father of Sarah Beall Magruder. Greg has the marriage date of Alexander BEALL and Margaret RAMSEY as May 21, 1646. It is such a confusing family because there were so many people intermarring and using same first names while being born near the same times. Thanks again.

    3. Hi All and Laurie Ann, I've been lurking on the list for a little while after I signed off early this fall....I missed the controversy and challenge of the Bealls...and I'm still looking for the father of James d. 1795. Here's the lineage of James who married Ann Pottenger, dau. of Robert and Ann Evans as I have it-- 1 Alexander BEALL (abt 1621 - ) b. abt 1621, St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland & Margaret RAMSAY b. St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland m. 21 May 1646, St. Andrew's, Fifeshire, Scotland | 1a Alexander BEALL* (1649 - 1744) | b. 1649, St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland | d. 1744, Prince George's Co., MD | & UNKNOWN | m. abt 1684 | | 1 Ninian Of Alexander BEALL (1686 - abt 1771/1772) | | d. abt 1771/1772, Frederick County, MD | | & Ruth ( - aft 1749) | | | 1 James BEALL (abt 1713 - 1780) | | | d. 1780, Montgomery Co., MD | | | & Ann POTTENGER (1736 - 1787) Will of James Beall of Ninian (Liber A., folio 283), names wife Ann executrix. "I, James Beall of Ninian, planter, of Montgomery County, Maryland, give to my brother, Robert, my negro boy, John; to brother Benjamin's children, viz., Lloyd, Ninian, Cephus and Nancy, I50, after the death of wife, estate to be sold. One third to be paid to brother Robert, and two thirds to my nephews and nieces. Certified by: Made April 17,1778. Probated May 22,1780. Thomas TURNER, Register of Wills." from Albert S. Edwards book-- Albert S. Edwards, Historical Sketches of the Beall and Edwards Families, W.W. Rokker, Printer and Binder, 1910. Roberta Hull is a frequent contributor to the Beall Genealogical News and spends the spring in MD every year to research the early Bealls..the snarliest family going. I don't even attempt to understand just how she figures out who's who, but she's got a a pretty good grip on the Bealls. I believe she follows the land transactions in order to sort them all out 'tho she quotes all kinds of sources from the MD State Archives as well; she's quite convincing. Bill Beall, publisher of the Beall Genealogical News (available at a modest $12 per year) can be reached at: Beall Genealogical News PO Box 33918 Portland, OR 97292-3918 From your email: John Bowie, Jr. married Elizabeth Pottinger. She was born in 1717, and was the daughter of Dr. Robert Pottinger and Ann Evans, his wife. The latter couple were married in 1716. In 1737 Dr. Pottinger deeded to his son-in-law, John Bowie, "on account of my love and affection for him, " a large plantation in Queen Anne Parish. This added to the land given him by his father, and that received by his first wife, which she inherited from her father, and also located on Collington Branch, made John Bowie, Jr., an extensive land-owner.... Hmmm, Elizabeth Pottinger inherited land on Collington Branch, eh. Well the Big Cheese Colonel Ninian (1625-1717) owned land on Collington Branch which he willed to his grandson Samuel, so the Pottengers were neighbors to the Bealls... From Jack Day's database: Col Ninian's will, 1717 (PGW WB6:504) gave to George: Rock of Dunbarton, 480 acres; Andrew Hambleton [husband of dau. Mary], negro woman Alie; Mary, dau of son, Ninian, deceased, part of Bacon Hall; Samuel, son of Ninian, deceased, Mill on Collington Branch and rest of Bacon Hall; Joseph Belt, part of "Good Luck", 243 acres; Charles. Book of Bishop Cooper's works and 1000 acres lying on the south side of the Choptank River called Dunn Back (Danby?); Granddaughter Mary and Samuel, to be brought up according to their station. Another reference to Collington in Jack's database is: Samuel Beall, Sr, b. 1706 (age 70 in 1776) of Ninian, Jr [1669]. At father's death in 1710 awarded part of plantation Bacon Hall, also Water Mill with stones on Collington Branch in grandfather's and father's will; also iron works, houses and material on Collington Branch. Brought up by mother and stepfather William Beall. A Nov. 1996 iteration of Jack's database is available from my Simms Family page...daymega.zip, as I recall. I'm sure Jack's been updating his database now that it's a year later. Email him at Jackson H. Day <TDHM26A@prodigy.com> I don't have a Bowie in my database, but I'll bet Roberta Hull knows something about Mary Beall Bowie... Roberta Hull 4424 E. 3. Hello, Cheryl. This is the family I'm talking about. My question is who did Catherine, the daughter of James and Margaret Edmonston Beall marry--my ancestor, Charles Lovelace, or his brother Isaac? Thanks for any help you can give me. 3. Hi Karen McClendon & Cheryl Jackson, Thanks for the info on the Archibald Edmonston (1670-1734) and wife Jane Beall (born after 1675). I did have most of their children in my computer, but not connected as their children. With your data I was able to connect all their children that married a Beall. Upon connection the children, I find a little additional information that may help you in some way. Daughter Jane Edmonston (1715-1750) who married General Samuel Beall (1706-1777) had a son named Zachariah Beall (1743-1817), who married Rebecca Tyson in 1773. Gen. Samuel Beall was the son of Ninian Beall, Jr. (1674-1734), who married Elizabeth Magruder (1689-1764). Daughter, Mary Ann Edmonston (1703) married James Beall (1698-1733) who was the son of James Beall (1652-1725) who married Sarah Pierce. You show the father were Alexander Beall. I don't know where I got the info I show, as I have received data from many wonderful people and have not taken the care to post the source. Son, James Edmonston (1698-1753) married Mary Beall, the daughter of Ninian Beall, Jr. I show that this Mary Beall was the sister of General Samuel Beall (1706-1777) mentioned above as the husband of Jane Edmonston. I also show another brother, George Beall born 1729. I did show Margaret as the wife of James Beall (1698-1793), but I did not show a maiden name, and did not have her connected with her parents. Unfortuantely I do not show any children for James and Margaret Beall, which was the line you were researching, as I understand your message. You show James as the son of Robert Beall. I show that James was the son of Robert Beall born in County Perth, Scotland married to Margaret. Cheryl, I notice you show this James Beall was the son of James and Sarah Pierce Beall. Do you have any documentation for this relationship? Which is correct? Thanks again for helping me connect these Edmonston children. Tom Green TBGreen3@aol.com

    3. I have a James Beall b. 2-5-1651 in Scotland married to Sarah Pierce. they had a James Beall b. abt 1698 died 1783 and married a Margaret Edmonston ( daughter of Archibald and Jane Beall). Archibald Edmonston had (I Think) James Edmonston m. Mary Beall Mary Ann Edmonstron m. James Beall ( son of James b. 1672, Maryland and Sarah, grandson of John and Jeanat Oliphant) Archilbald Edmonston, Jr m. Dorothy Brooke Eleanor Edmonston m. Edward Offutt Jane Edmonston m. William Smith Ruth Edmonston m. John Orme Martha Edmonston m. John Allen Thomas Edmonston m. Ruth Offutt Margaret Edmonston m. James Beall ( son of James and Sarah Pierce, and grand son of Alexander and Margaret Ramsey Beall) This would make Archilbald have 2 sons in laws by the name of James Beall This is from the Edmonston section on the Colonial Families of America Book. I don't have the hard copy any more we moved 2000 miles and boxes disappeared. 3. Hi All.. I just joined the Beall list and am a member of many other lists including the Bowie's. I would love to have someone clarify some info I found on the web, so I know that I have the right Ninian Beall, as one list of Wills I have in MD reflects at least a dozen Ninian Beall's! Here's my info & the Elizabeth Pottinger dau of Robert Pottinger (gee....always spelled various ways, like many other surnames back then).... m. John Bowie, Jr. (my 5th g-gparents). I would like to know a couple great references for this info... Any help would sure be appreciated & I'd like to find out (if my info IS in fact correct) how far back this Beall line goes (and is documented), as I have the Bowie's > Mullikin > Prather/Prater to King Charlemagne b. 742 ad. Thanx bunches.... ! Happy New Year !!! Laurie Ann (Kozelka) Bieber Sarasota, FL

He died in 1765 and left a will in Granville Co, SC. They had a son, Hilary Thomas BUSSEY. I am descended from Rev Charles BUSSEY son of George BUSSEY III and his wife Mary COLLIER. In various legal documents, there are signatures and witnesses by Ninian BEALL, Alexander Magruder, and others, making it appear that the families might have known one another well. I am interested in finding out if Mary BEALL was related to Ninian BEALL, and if so, in what way. My question is: Who was the Mary BEALL who married George BUSSEY III, and came to SC. My main reason for needing this information is to prove without a doubt that George BUSSEY who married Mary COLLIER is the same George BUSSEY who married Mary BEALL. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 1. [BEALL-L] Beall, Catherine>Frederick Co, MD>1731+
    2. Karen McClendon
    3. Catherine Beall was the daughter of James Beall (1698-1793) and Margaret Edmonston. The records I've seen (DAR; DAC; Gaither book; various Beall books) indicate that she married my ancestor, Charles Lovelace. For some reason, Lovelace researchers say that Charles married Catherine Robey and his brother Isaac married Catherine Beall. Earlier this week, I found a Robey book and they had Isaac married to Catherine Robey. In other words, all sources but the Lovelaces seem to accept the Charles Lovelace/Catherine Beall marriage as fact. Do any of you have documentation on this? I need to know whether to research the Bealls or the Robeys! Thanks in advance. Karen

    1. [BEALL-L] Near Philadelphia?
    2. Beall, Thomas E. (MCI)
    3. Is anyone on this list in or near Philadelphia? Some years ago I was there to visit the Genealogical Society library, but was not sufficiently knowledgeable and failed to copy down information on some little known, and hardly proven Beall lore. I picked up a book that related the story about how the Beall clan became such as a result of the English attempts to destroy the Druids. The surviving priesthood and family's drew together, formed a larger family group and penned the surname Beall. Supposedly the surname was a purposeful misspelling of their God Bael. If anyone is near enough to the library to find this reference and publish to this list, I know I would appreciate it, and I presume others would find it very interesting indeed. Thanks, Tom Beall (family from Greene County, PA) Colorado Springs

    3. To Ed Beall and others interested, A Bell (Bell of the Borders) tartan is available from a Scottish mill in 1991. I obtained the address from the "Bell-A-Peal" newsletter. I do not know if this is exactly correct tartan for our Bells who became Bealls in Maryland. Perhaps someone else does. It is a beautiful blue (almost a twilight blue) with black, yellow, red, and turquoise accents in the lines forming the plaid. Prices below are 1991 when I ordered. Lochcarron of Scotland Peter Anderson Division Nether Mill Huddersfield Street Galashiels, SCOTLAND TD1 3BA Samples of Bell tartan are 23.10 pounds per yard (58" wide) for the lighter weight fabric (1991 prices) called "Reiver." There is a heavier one, which is more and has a slightly larger pattern to the plaid. Reiver scarves are L14.95 each. They also offer a number of skirt styles and will make to order. It seems expensive, but I did not save much money by having my skirt made here by a dressmaker who is reasonable. They have other products besides scarves and will send a brochure upon request. They take credit cards. (I ordered 2 yards of the Reiver for a skirt, which was plenty. Our newspaper prints the ratio of the pound to the dollar daily; of course, banks have that info. too.) The Jan-Feb-Mar 1996 issue of the "Bell-A-Peal" gives a U.S. company which can buy from the Lochcarron Mill: J. Higgins, Inc., P.O. Box 14341, Lenexa, KS 66285; Phone (800) 426-7268. By the way, when I was in Scotland in 1979, I got the same run-around from shops about McMillan being the plaid for Bells to buy and there being no Bell/Beall tartan. Cecilie Gaziano

    3. Happy New Year all you "BEALLS" wherever you are and whoever you are! I have been doing some checking into the various thoughts on who our ancestors really were, at least from my lines. I found one book who > makes Col. Ninian BEALL the husband of both Elizabeth GORDON and Ruth > MOORE, and another who says the husband of Elizabeth GORDON was "another > Ninian". I swear it is very hard to sort out all of the BEALLs, > especially where they are named Ninian and sometimes there is no dates. > > I found a rather good Col Ninian BEALL history online from Ruth Beall > Gelders which I can forward to you, IF you are interested. She gives > lists of wives, children etc for the Col. She gives both women as wives of > Col. Ninian also. I am really interested in history > of my family but to get the right history I have to pin down the people. some people which have sent me lists have all different children for the various Beall families. I found, also some really interesting items which you might like to "chew on". We were previously concerned about which Sarah BEALL is which. Seems there are as many differences of opinion are there are Sarah Bealls. Looks like we all need to stop and do some serious documenting. Since my WARMAN family was agreed that our Sarah ??? who married Frances WATTS was indeed, Sarah BEALL who was a descendent of Col. Ninian BEALL I pursued that idea. As much as I would love to be descended from such a fine Gentleman, I cannot be sure that is true. So please see the following. > The Warman family did extensive documented research on their lines. 1. [BEALL-L] Largo
    2. Ed Beall
    3. Hi, gang..happy new year! Thought you might be interested in a few tidbits about Largo, where it all began for most of us. When I visited Scotland several years ago, I looked up the name "Beall" in the Glasgow telephone directory and was amazed to find there was not a single one. Lots of "Bell's" but no "Beall's." In the Edinburgh book there were only about seven "Beall's". I wrote down the numbers but didn't have the nerve to call any of them. ("Hi..I'm an American named Beall. Are you my cousin?") They might have thought I was crackers. Apparently, the Beall's with that spelling are still concentrated in or near Largo. In the press of travel I had very little time, only a quick drive-through on the bus, to visit Largo, a pretty little town, an overgrown fishing village on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, east of Edinburgh. If you've ever watched the British Open being played at St. Andrews golf course nearby, you will get the picture. Sand dunes, rocky uplands, not many trees; combine this with the cold winds of winter, and brick and stone are the building materials of choice. There is much natural beauty in Scotland albeit of a kind of wild, rocky character, and you reach a point where you feel you will scream if you see any more heather or sheep, but I would say our ancestral home of Fife is among the prettiest in all Scotland. I was there in summer, and I'm sure it would be something to try anybody's conditioning when the big storms come rolling in from the North Sea in winter. The oil platforms out in the North Sea were a very visible eyesore. While watching a nightclub show in Edinburgh (Haggis, which is dreadful, piper playing "Amazing Grace") I struck up a conversation with a guy at the next table. I told him I was descended from the Beall's of Largo, and he said "Oh, yes the Beall's are in Largo; my mother was a Beall." In the small towns like Largo, you would see quite a few of the Scots wearing clothes made of their tartans; I can't think of a nicer custom. Two Scotsmen could be standing talking to each other, knowing by their tartans that the ancestors of one treacherously double-crossed and slaughtered the ancestors of the other. Scottish people I talked to referred to "The Kingdom of Fife" rather than "Fifeshire", but I don't know that history. My impression was that the industry of making Scotch whiskey (nectar from Heaven, only better) was not prevalent in Fifeshire. The reason why there were no "Beall's" in the Glasgow phone book relates to the Book of Clans in Scotland. Bell is a sub-clan of MacMillan, who inhabited the west marshes and islands northwest of Glasgow, clear across Scotland from Largo. The towns of Oban and Inveraray are in the area, if you want to see it on a map. "Millan" comes from a Celtic word meaning something like monk, as in a monastery. We have seen coats of arms for Bell, separate from MacMillan, but the clothing stores, and I tried several, insisted there was no separate tartan for Bell, that "Bell" was cross-referenced to "MacMillan," so I finally bought ties etc. in the MacMillan dress and hunting tartans. Anyway, apparently some of our distant ancestors came from the west of Scotland to Largo, and apparently introduced the new spelling there and it did not spread very far. I am writing this from memory, and I hope any of you who spot errors will be kind.

Please post more stories about our ancestors. I know you have many stories you can relate from the research you have done. A readed man 6 feet 7 inches tall who fought against Cromwell in 1650 and served his servitude as a badge of honor, and then sired no telling how many children, must have left hundreds of stories we would all love to hear.
