Author: zannemar Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baysinger/360.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is a family of Bessingers/Baysingers (spelled Bossinger with the umlaut O pronounced ay) who settled on the Volga river in Russia when Catherine the Great offered them land, freedom from military service and no taxes. They maintained their own government and were considered Germans. They were in Stahl am Tarlyk and Kukkus and came from Florstadt, Germany (to the best of my knowledge but let's face it, we're dealing with Russian archives here). Prior to the revolution, some resettled to Siberia in search of land as their villages were getting overcrowded. After the revolution, many were deported to Siberia and places like Kazakhstan. From 1900 on, they fled to the U.S., settling primarily in the Midwest and grain belt but also in the South, Northeast, CA and the Northwest. In other words, it's possible you have ancestors from Siberia, but not definite. My ancestors are from there but none went to Siberia and they all came to the U.S. before the deportations. See if your ancestors were ever there. Many of them lied about where they from when they came here to avoid being stigmatized. Thanks, Larry: I consider you the accurate source on all Baysinger info because of your extensive research. I wish I could pin down a death date for Elizabeth Rice Baysinger.
