Today's Rootsweb Review has an excellent article about Genealogical Treasures (by Dean DeBolt <[email protected]>) and what should be done with them -- the author suggests, "donate these items to an archives or historical society -- first making sure that the archives or historical society fully catalogs such items. A key point is whether their materials are cataloged into OCLC or RLIN. These are national online card catalogs that make it possible to find out where information is. I know quite a few historical societies that do good work but no one outside of their building knows what they have. But when an organization catalogs on a national online card catalog or database, thousands can discover family papers and research records throughout the country." "The RLIN catalog is online at <http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/>. Select the RLIN AMC search -- you can search a family name and other terms." On a search of NUCMUC, I got this interesting reference: Author: Basinger, William Starr, 1827-1910. Title: William Starr Basinger reminiscences, 1889-1910. Description: 5 v. 2 microfilm reels ; 35 mm. Notes: William Starr Basinger (1827-1910), lawyer, college president (North Georgia Agricultural College), officer in the Savannah Volunteer Guards, resident of Savannah, Dahlonega, and Athens, Georgia. The collection consists of the reminiscences of William Starr Basinger, which he began in 1889 and completed in 1896, he then made short diary-type entries from 1896-1910. The reminiscences contain information on the genealogy of the Basinger and Starr families; the involvement of his uncle William Elon Basinger in Dade's Battle of the 2nd Seminole War in Florida with pasted newsclippings; growing up in Savannah (Ga.); going to college at the University of Georgia; the law profession; his involvement in the Savannah Volunteer Guards (later the 8th Georgia Battalion) in the Civil War stationed in Savannah (Ft. Screven), then Charleston (Ft. Boggs and Ft. Wagoner), then near Richmond (Va.) where he was captured and sent to prison on Johnson's Island (Ohio); and after the war, he discusses the move to Dahlonega (Ga.) and his presidency at the North Georgia Agricultural College. The collection also contain a typescript volume on the history of the Savannah Volunteer Guards, 1858-1882, taken in part from the reminiscences. Finding aid available in repository. From our resource page, near the bottom, you will find links (the colored puzzle pieces) to every one of our GenConnect boards. Query, Biography, Wills, Pensions, Bible records, Deeds, Obituaries. Rootsweb has provided us with the very finest and most cutting-edge tools to use for both posting and searching/retrieving queries and research data. It is a bit time consuming to key in these documents in the first place, but I am going to assume that many of you have, as do I, obituaries, wills and so forth that you have typed in to use in your personal genealogy records, and for easy reference and sharing. You can just copy and paste that text in the text-entry window on the appropriate board. Please consult with me if you have questions about where to post certain information <mailto:[email protected]>. Once you post, for instance, a Will, anyone searching anywhere in the GenConnect system, or even all of Rootsweb, will pop up that Will. I have been so busy setting all of these resources up for us, I haven't had time to post my research to the boards yet. But you can be assured I *will*! I want very much to connect with all my 'cousins', where ever in the world they are, and share information with them! All the best, Valorie

Lynda, I do not have the actual newspaper account on Peter Baysingers death. The Warren co, historian was connected by our Byers line so always just sent me tidbits on Baysingers when she found them. Since she put the date of the paper, probably would not be hard to get an actual copy. I found some of my Baysingers (Elias of Peter) at this URL if anyone wants to check it out. Interesting! After asking ya'll to update Rootslink at our resource page, I decided to check it out. I hadn't done so since it first came back up, months ago. Rootslink had T W E N T Y - F O U R links! I was wowed! Sampubco had the above listing for James V. Baysinger from Pittsburg, as a Crawford County, Kansas Will Testator. As you may or may not know, Sampubco finds wills, which they will copy and send you for $8. <http://www.wasatch.com/~dsam/sampubco/order.htm>. Anyway, back to Rootslink! This was only link #4! Just wanted to add my two cents to the discussion. I have researched their son, Elias who is ancestor of my husband. In looking over my notes: I see a glaring error of some sort. I was given note of Elizabeth in the 1880 census of Elmendosa twp, Lyon Co, Kansas with parents born in Wales but I have her death date of 2-8-1874. Can anyone help me with what census this might have come from. Another question was asked about Peter's death date. I have the following note on that. Warren county (Iowa) Advocate Tribune 9-30-1886 reports death of pioneer Peter Baysinger in Weede Co, colorado. on Sept 9, 1886 Now lets see what else I may have of interest. Claims of the Citizens of Territory of Kansas, Vol 1859, p 558, 559, 560 #302 "To the Honorable Commissioner of Claims: The petition of Peter Baysinger, under the act of the legislative assembly, and an act supplementary thereto, approved 23d of February, 1857, providing for the auditing and certifying of claims for damage suffered during the late troubles in Kansas Territory. The above named petitioner respectfully shows to this commissioner, that on or about the 30th of November, 1854, this petitioner resided at Black Jack Point, on the Santa Fe road, in Kansas Territory; that while this petitioner was absent from home a large band of armed men, as this petitioner is informed and believes, entered the house of this petitioner and drove his family from therein and stole and carried away five hundred and sixty-five dollars in gold, broke and destroyed one gun, of the value of fifteen dollars; that he was the legal owner of the said money and of the said gun; that those persons claimed to be Missourians, and declared that this petitioner should not live in Kansas Territory; that on or about the 30th of March, 1855, a party of armed men, as the petitioner is informed and believes, came to the house of this petitioner, while he was absent, and tore the room off from the house and threw the sides of it nearly down; also tearing down the chimney; put fire into the beds and lard can, with the honest intention of burning the house; broke to pieces one bedstead, one double-barrel shot-gun, one clock, and divers dishes and household furniture, of the damage to this petitioner of five hundred dollars; that this petitioner was the legal owner of said house and prooperty destroyed; that the house was one story and a half high and 18 by 20 feet on the ground; that he now resides in Douglas county, Kansas Territory, and that said property and money has not been returned to this petitioner, or any part been returned to him, nor has any remuneration been made therefor. Therefore this petitioner prays that the sum of ten hundred and sixty dollars may be allowed him for his damage in the premises." Signed Peter Baysinger, his mark, in Lawrence, November 16, 1857. There are two statements from neighbors about this incident, and a statement by Elizabeth E. Baysinger (Peter's daughter). The result was he was awarded $800. Fellow Researchers, I have just come across a very important essay, at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/cook.htm>, titled INTERNET GENEALOGY - WHAT'S GOOD! WHAT'S NOT! . . . AND WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?! by Bettie Cummings Cook, CG. If you are a beginning researcher, it is important that you read this article. If you are an experienced researcher, for the sake of good genealogical information on the Internet, it is *crucial* that you read this article. And consider linking to it from your own webpages, if you have them. All the best, Valorie Zimmerman Black Diamond, Washington USA Proud sponsor of Rootsweb Listmom/GCC -- too many to list!

Jason, According to my records the parents of Elizabeth Rice were Elias Rice and Jane Rogers. This information came from a Marilyn Knight many years ago. She was a descendant of Peter and Elizabeth through Oregon's brother William Harrison. As you know Peter and Elizabeth moved a lot and could have been missed in some of the censuses. I believe that in the 1840 census they were either in Breckinridge County, Kentucky or in Edgar County, Illinois. Elizabeth died in childbirth in Iowa in 1848, and from the story I was given some of the children remained in Iowa and Peter went almost immediately possibly with some of his children to either Lyons County or Mitchell County, Kansas. I suspect then that he was in Kansas for the 1850 census although some of his children may have been in Iowa. Peter was living in the Kansas territory when a big struggle was going on to decide whether Kansas should be a slave or free state. Proslavery people from Missouri caused him a lot of property damage, and it is believed that they set up his son Peter Washington, claimed he was a horse thief, and lynched him. Descendants were told that Peter Washington Basinger died in the Civil War. Your ancestor Oregon was in the Civil War, and you can write for his records if you don't have them. I have been in touch with another descendant of Oregon, a Bernice Stephens. Have you ever run across her? I have Peter traced back several generations also. What I am trying to find is where his family was during the census years. Also if there is any further info on Elizabeth Rice. At least she was married to Asa Ruby before she was married to Elias Rice, and had several children with him. Some of her Ruby children m Baysinger children. It is possible Elias' first wife was Catherine although that has not been proven. An Elias and Catherine purchased and sold property in VA and KY. I don't have date of death for Elizabeth, but Peter died 9 Sep 1886 in Colorado and is buried in Sedalia, Colorado, (Bear Canyon Cem).

I am trying to find Oregon Baysinger and his father Peter Baysinger in the Census records. Oregon married Elizabeth Smith and Peter married Elizabeth Rice.
