I just came across this message through an internet search. I was asking my mom today about an ancestor of ours who was a Rough Rider, and who died on the battle of San Juan Hill. Ol' Teddy himself, as the story goes, came to the funeral of Clay Green. After talking with my mom, I was interested in the Umphleet name, since my great-grandmother Lovey had that as a last name. But what was really odd as I read this post, was seeing my grandfather, Ken Baysinger, referred to as a possible uncle for someone (he died of brain cancer). Apparently there are many family members out there I have never known existed. If it is possible to get any information on my family lineage, I would appreciate the help. I and many others, have only been able to trace as far back as him. I was wondering if your mother-in-law would have any additional information that may help? Hattie Baysinger married Louis Lefler and they had my grandfather, Ralph Lefler. My grandfather used to have a picture of Swan hanging in his office when I was a child, but a relative asked to borrow it and never returned it. As far as I know, that was the only picture of him, and all other information has been removed from the Utah records. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My email is sueoberlin@msn.com. Thank you! She was not (to my understanding) from NY, and I suspect she may have been from OH. Both Marilyns were RNs to confuse the matter more. Sounds like you've done a lot on the Baysinger line. Author: terrimal Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baysinger/362.4.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have little information on the parents of Elisabetrh Rice Baysinger. Her father, Elias Rice, apparently came to America from Wales. The first recorded mention of his location was Harrison County, VA in 1796. It appears he was married to a Catherine ______, who presumably was the mother of Elisabeth since Elisabeth was born in 1814. In 1800, records show Elias and Catherine selling 100 acres near Simpson's Creek in Harrison County, VA (now West Virginia). In 1802, Elias and Catherine again sold some land in the same area. By 1810, they had relocated to Kentucky. The 1810 census for Breckenridge County, KY shows Elias with a wife, aged 26-45, presumably Catherine. By the 1820 census, Elias is living in Hardin County, KY with six children, but lists no wife. He has one male 10-16, two females under 10 and three females 10-16. He apparently married Jane Rogers sometime between 1820 and 1830. In the 1830 census for Hardin County, Elias Rice (male 60-70) is listed with a female (50-60) , one male 20-30 and one female 15-20 (Probably Elisabeth). I am a gr-gr-granddaughter of Peter Baysinger and Elisabeth Rice. Their oldest son, Elias Henry, was my gr-grandfather. I have been trying for several years to determine the date and place of death for Elisabeth Rice Baysinger. She and Peter were living in Elmandaro, Lyon County, Kan. up through the 1880 federal census. Then they vanished. Peter died in 1886 in Weld County, Colo., which was near the Longmont, Colo. home of their daughter, Nancy Frances Longan. He is buried in Sedalia, Douglas County, Colo., south of Denver. I have visited the gravesite several times and had a stone placed there two years ago because there was none. I included her name on the stone as his wife with a blank for the date of death. But I cannot locate anything on Elisabeth. I am wondering about the information you furnished that she died in Hardin County, Ky? Valerie, For some who may not be aware of Rockingham County, Virginia church records you can find online at <http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/FriedensRecords/AA-FriedensChurchRecords.htm> the records of the Friedens church where the Baysingers and Plechers worshipped. Both names were spelled in various ways in the records. In fact the Baysingers are indexed under the letter P. In old records one sometimes sees our ancestors names spelled Pasinger. Larry Payne
Interesting story -- in the church records -- you can find ARGABRIGHT/Erganbright families. The Baysingers are my husband's family. The Argabrights are my family. They moved from Rockingham Co., VA to Montgomery Co., VA to Breckenridge Co., KY where John Argabright died and Baysingers bought goods. No more family connections -- other than both my Argabrights and one branch of Baysingers ended up in Clark Co., Oh. Then in 1957 -- I met Ray and the Baysinger lines and Argabrights lines became one -- over 150 years after attending church together. Small world. Take care.
