Author: cdbaysinger Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baysinger/379/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Well, in regards to the Jewish connection, I recently discover the German town of Baisingen, in the 16th century it was called Bösingen (Basinger or Bösinger in German means from the town of Bösingen) in the year 1596 the town became a refuge for Jews expelled Western Austria. As mentioned above, Basinger means from Bösingen. The process of assigning permanent surnames to Jewish families (most of which are still used to this day) began in Austria. On 23 July 1787, five years after the Edict of Tolerance, the Austrian emperor Joseph II issued a decree called Das Patent über die Judennamen which compelled the Jews to adopt German surnames.[3][4][5] Prussia did so soon after, beginning with Silesia: the city of Breslau in 1790, the Breslau administrative region in 1791, the Liegnitz region in 1794. In 1812, when Napoleon had occupied much of Prussia, surname adoption was mandated for the unoccupied parts; and Jews in the rest of Prussia adopted surnames in 1845.[2][6] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_surname plus this http://www.avotaynu.com/books/MenkNames.html YouŽll see Baisinger, Basinger, Bassinger Bösing, Boesing Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandfather was George W. Baysinger, Myrtle's brother. I'm pretty sure your ggrandmother was born in Williamson County, Il. 3. No, sorry. That's another branch of the original immigrant brothers. Johann's descendants began in Lancaster, PA, moved the Blue Ridge area of Virginia, then to Kentucky. My branch then came to Indianola, IA. Thanks for asking. These Baysingers were a nomadic sort.
