In a message dated 99-06-08 23:18:27 EDT, you write: << how many times have you come across it in your research? >> Valorie, I have really not done much original research on the Baysinger line except in Iowa and have never seen it listed as Persinger. West Virginia had Paysinger for a couple of entries but that is the only time I have found it listed starting with a P. Take care Marilyn
Hi, Cousins, I just requested from Rootsweb the 'keys' to our cluster site, <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/a/BAYSINGER/>. At the same time, I have requested the Persinger cluster, list and GC boards, which are newly created, and have no volunteer admin. I'm curious....Lola Wagner listed Persinger as one of the Baysinger variant spellings, but how many times have you come across it in your research? It is one of the top 10,000 names in the RSL, which was a bit surprising to me. I envision the Persinger list funneling to our Baysinger list, while the GC boards get that variant spelling. Feedback, anyone? Valorie

>From the latest Rootsweb Review: SEARCH THE ROOTSWEB SURNAME LIST (RSL) BY E-MAIL. Want to search the RSL's more than 600,000 surnames submitted by more than 100,000 researchers, but you don't have Web access and so you can not go to <http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi>? Now you do not need Web access. Just write an e-mail with the surnames you are researching in the body of the message, one surname per line, and send it to <rsl-search@rootsweb.com>.
-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [GENCONNECT-HELP-L] Helping others find your query through proper use of the Surnames Box Date: Mon, 7 Jun 1999 02:07:03 EDT From: JYoung6180@aol.com I spent some time today going over my query boards and fixing some errors I came across. One problem I encountered frequently was improper use of the surname box. We have dicussed before on this list which surnames should be included in the surname box but we haven't discussed the proper method of typing in the surnames as I recall. First of all a surname is just that--a surname. John Schultz is NOT a surname. Schultz of Roanoke is NOT a surname. A surname is Schultz and nothing more. The entries you show in the surnames box, and whether or not you show them properly, are the most important aspects of helping others find your query through a search. Surnames that are improperly shown in the surnames box (or surnames that are omitted all together) will not allow the search engines (Global Search and Surname Helper) to properly list your surnames so that others will find them in a search. In some cases the poster is not showing surnames in the surnames box at all. In others he is omitting any surnames he included in the subject line (i.e. the main surname). Only the surnames shown in the surname box will be indexed by the search engines. Therefore, including a surname in the subject line, while helping current board users to find you, will not accomplish the same thing in the future from a search. Also, the instructions on the page say to list ONE surname per line--type the surname and then hit the enter key and type the next surname. Repeat that process for each surname you are recording. Hitting the enter key is what triggers the comma to be automatically added that separates the surname from the next one to be listed. You don't type in the comma or punctuation since hitting the enter key after typing each surname accomplishes this although you don't see if until the query is displayed on the board. Joan ==== GENCONNECT-HELP Mailing List ==== GenConnect HINTS can be found at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/HINTS/index.html ------- Valorie's note: GenConnect-Help-L@rootsweb.com can be subscribed to, just like any other Rootsweb list. I had a question on my McBee list about variant surname spellings. This list is for ALL variants of Baysinger, and some of them seem pretty far-fetched! However, Rootsweb's emerging new system of Clusters for each surname should help brand new researchers to find us, even if their surname NOW is spelled differently from the list name. The wonderful thing about GenConnect, is that someone searching for you WILL find you, no matter where you post! There are many Baysinger queries and records on various county boards......check 'em out! I wrote to many of those people (some of you listers), and suggested linking those posts back to our boards. Haven't gotten much response on that, yet. Even so, those posts show up on a GenConnect general search. The new cluster board makes it so SIMPLE to make all the different surname searches Rootsweb has to offer! Please visit our new Cluster site and check out our new tools and toys! <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/a/BAYSINGER/> All the best to all my relations, Valorie
This is such an exciting time to be doing genealogy. With the growth of the Internet, there is an explosion of new information sources available to us, and new, innovative ways of locating and organizing all that data. You've all heard of the official opening of the LDS site, and how it is getting so many hits it is already overloaded! In contrast, before Rootsweb's newest innovation, they put new, lightening fast servers online, and are well-equipped to handle the heavy traffic. If any of you do not receive Rootsweb Review, you can ask me for a copy. The improvements in Rootsweb's structure and ease-of-use are so well explained in RWR, that I don't want to try to restate, and it's unfair to the subscribers to quote it all! The Listowners and GenConnect coordinators knew about these big changes a couple of days ago, and I have just been bursting with the desire to spill the beans to my lists! Now RWR is out to the public. This is *so exciting*! Even if you think you have thoroughly researched your surnames at Rootsweb, plug into <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/> and prepare to be amazed! All the best, Valorie, IBSSG Ecstatic newbie listowner/GCC for Baysinger and McBee Prouder than ever sponsor of Rootsweb

CART, JOHN HENR 1851 IN 137.000 DB KK1 1 1869 ? If these are your Baysingers, go to the Yates site and click on the submitter (the little 3-letter code). I found one person with an email address, sent her an invitation to join the list, and the email bounced back. So there are no guarantees! If there is no code, like the second Jacob listed, it will be an old typed or hand-written group sheet submitted to Yates, which you will have to buy. But the Internet submissions are searchable. Anyway, there were 10 references to Baysinger in the GeneaNet database. I didn't check alternate spellings. It was interesting! Valorie
Until I saw it referred to on another list, I had forgotten what a *superb* page of links <http://www.familychronicle.com> has. The link page is <http://www.familychronicle.com/worthsurf.htm>. One of the listed sites: GeneaNet <http://www.geneanet.org/>, which is a really useful surname search site. This is Family Chronicle's review of the site: "Yet another site with extremely lofty aspirations, GeneaNet's goal is nothing short of constructing "a database indexing all the genealogical resources over the world, on-line as well as off-line." GeneaNet's database consists of a list of surnames dating before 1850 which connect to pointers toward further information. One simply enters a surname into GeneaNet's search program and up comes a list of addresses where one can find further information about people of that surname. These addresses could be websites, e-mail addresses or postal addresses. Searches can be limited geographically if one wishes. "Among the resources stored in the collection are families studied by genealogists, genealogical publications (including both books and periodicals), manuscripts from libraries and archives and official sources such as church registers and deeds. "One of GeneaNet's nicest features is the ability to sign up with its SearchList to receive periodic e-mail updates on the names one is researching. Registering with the SearchList utility is a simple matter of filling in an online form with the surnames (and regions) in which one is interested and one's e-mail address. There is presently no limit on the number of names one can register. "GeneaNet is free of advertising, and a note at the bottom of its main page proclaims "GeneaNet is free, and will remain free forever."" GeneaNet has an interface which allows you to submit your own files, site or even just a contact address. I found ftp sites, websites....too much to search in one evening! Valorie

Take care. Guess this works in all > situations. > >Marilyn Thanks to Marilyn for sharing this AOL hint, which will work for all AOL users. I personally use Netscape, so it doesn't work *exactly* that way for me. I always "cut and paste" addresses. First, you always want to check out the address first, before sending it on. *Especially* to a list! (Ask me privately how embarrassing it can be to skip this step!) If it shows up in blue, you can just click on it. Secondly, once you're there, remember to bookmark it. With Netscape, you can file the bookmark in the categories you have set up, or just add it to the end of your list, and categorize later. Then select the URL (I just have to put my 'pointer' anywhere in the address and click), and copy. You can use your menu, or just <control> C. Third, click back to your email program (you don't have to close the browser), open up a new message, and paste (menu, or <control> V). Viola! It won't show up clickable in Netscape mail; I don't know about other programs. But when sent, it will be clickable. Cutting and pasting from messages will work just as well, if you are 100% sure that it is a reliable address you are sending on! Oh, the key to having the URL clickable -- is to properly type the beginning of the addy. See.....http://www.fake address.com......oops, the space! See what that does? Put in an underline -- http://fake_address.com, and it works fine. Well, enough about cutting and pasting for tonight!!! Valorie
