Author: BryanHoggarth Surnames: Baylis Whitley Bailiss Classification: queries Message Board URL: Message Board Post: Probably need to wait for you to get the 1863 marriage certificate to move this search back into the past. Meanwhile I thought to try to add to what John found in the 1871 canadian census. 1871 census for Canada was recording the status as of 2nd April 1871. Not having world access I can't see the full record but, if I have the right one, James BAYLIS was said to be 3 months old. Therefore he was born 2nd January or up to a month earlier than that. Ergo the family would have travelled to Canada in Jan to March 1871. So if it was in England James' birth should be registered in last quarter of 1870 or first quarter of 1871. Births could be registered up to six weeks after the birth. However I don't see any obvious candidates for the bith of James using Freebmd. There are some possibles but it could be that the child was born during the crossing. This stuff below is just wild speculation. Needs the fathers of Thomas and Mary to be identified from the 1863 marriage certifictae or some other source. If we assume that Thomas may have been younger than he was saying then he could be the Thomas BAYLIS born c. 1844 in Han(d)borough.
