My gggggg grandfather was Nathaniel Baxter, d. 1684 in Albemarle Co., N.C.. Oral tradition in the family (which no one has been able to document) was that his father was named Roger Baxter, and came to this country as an indentured servant. One of Nathaniel's grandsons, Israel (b.1762-d. 1835), moved to the Mississippi Territory in 1817. From him come the lines of Baxters in Mississippi, about which I have considerable information. I am looking for any information about Nathaniel's parentage. Janet B. Peltz 51-A Summit Ave. Albany, NY 12209 (518) 436-0442 <jbpeltz@capital.net>

Dear Mary, I don't seen anything which connects your Baxters to the descendants of Thomas Baxter and Nancy Stanford. There was another group of Baxter in southern Mississippi, which has many similar names, also from SC but no known connection to Thomas and Nancy. There is a book about these Baxters, whose name I have forgotten, which is in the genealogy section of the New Orleans Public Libary. Are you sure your Nathaniel Baxter died in NC and not VA? I've just never heard of that county in NC but have other lines that do come from Albemarle Co., VA. If that is the case it could be one of the reasons you can't locate anything on him, your looking in the wrong state. Dear Janet, Your grandfather, Rev. James A. Baxter, was the brother of my grandfather, Joseph Eggleston Baxter. As far as I know from my Dad's and Uncle Joe's research, the parents of the Thomas Baxter who married Nancy Stanford are still unknown, although there is much speculation about how he attached to the brothers, Theophilus and Israel, who migrated from George to Mississippi. More is known about Israel's descendants, many of whom settled in Alabama, than about Theophilus's, whose Georgia passport mentions eight children, but does not name them. If and when I retire, I plan to get with Joe's daughters, and try to do a new edtion of his and his wife Virginia's book, "John Warren and Related Families." Regards, Bob Robert S.
