I will go back and read how he fits in. Please, tell me how I can locate the Story about William Davis and the Saltenhatchie River. I am very interested in hearing it. I don't remember Mr. Parker telling me this story when I was corresponding with him a few years ago. Do you know where I can find information about the Baxters traveling on Wagon Trains. Do you have a copy of Theo Baxter's passport into Alabama? I do if you need it. Sandra
Wasn't Stephen Baxter one of J. W. . William Noble and Able Baxter's brothers or was he a generation above him? I have tons of letters and information from Marjorie Baxter whose husband was related to William Noble Baxter. I also have several letters from Elmer Parker, a nicer man you couldn't meet anywhere. Who is William Davis?? I have never heard this story. What is the Saltchatcher River in Colleton County, S. C. July 2, 1771. I think I miss out on this story. Is there any was you could share this with me? I didn''t mean to say I didn't know what a Wagon Train was. All though I do relate to a Wagon Train I've seen in the Western movies. I meant, have you any stories or the Baxters traveling by Wagon Trains , if so, what direction did they travel and how would you find information about the Baxters and Wagon Trains. What line of the Baxters are you from. Mine settled in Washington County, Alabama. Abe Baxter that was killed in 1932 in Vinegar Bend , Alabama, Washington County. was related to William Noble Baxter. > Abe Baxter lived in Fruitdale, > Alabama. > > Thanks for your information. Couldn't possibly be the brother of Wm Noble Baxter, the event occurred in 1771. The Saltenhatchie River (Saltcatcher) is in South Carolina. It on the map. Regards, Bob
No it was a Stephen Baxter, probably as son of the first Israel, according to Elmer Parker, who was beaten by William Davis in the forks of the Saltcatcher River in present Colleton County, SC, on 2 July 1771. He survived and went back to NC. As far as the wagon train story, remember in the period, you could walk, ride a horse, or ride in a wagon. When a group of people(and these people generally travelled in groups for safety) moved great distance, some walked, some rode horses, and some rode in wagons, along with whatever goods and furniture they had together with horses, cattle, sheep, or goats, as fast as the slowest animal, and rounding up stragglers along the way. The strung out affair was a slow, tedious, and dangerous journey, over rough roads, thru many streams and rivers in generally wooded areas. What you call it is not really important. Wagon train is pretty close but I would not think in terms of covered wagons on the plains. I don't think these trail parties were nearly as large or as long as the ones that crossed the plains. There is a diary of just such a journey in the early nineteenth century which I have but can't but my hands on right now. Regards, Bob
I always had the impression that "wagon trains" had more to do with the Westward Ho migration. go to ' http://www.dreamartists.com/wagontrain1.htm " (ignore the blue it is all one address. ) or just go to search "wagon trains".

My ancestors came from North and South Carolina , in the early 1800s,traveling thru Georgia, crossing over to Alabama, one ancestor having a passport leaving Georgia into Alabama. They settled in Mississippi and some went on to Texas. In all my researching I have never heard mention of a Wagon Train. I really don't know how they traveled. I do know that some of the families that was with them in Georgia settled with them in Mississippi. My gr gr grandpapa J. W. Baxter and my gr gr grandmother Charity Elizabeth Williford were born 1808 in Georgia while traveling and settling in lower Alabama. My Woulards were from North Carolina and were one of the few white settlers that settled in Wayne County, Mississippi. (Eret and State Line) Benjamin F. Woulard born in 1804 and was on his way to Mississippi by1810. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help. Sandra maiden name Waldrop Georgia Dear Sandra, JW Baxter was the son of Israel Baxter and his second wife Delia. He ws the brother of Theophilus Baxter whose wife Mary had the spat the Baptist church with Israel's first wife Lucy. Theophilus and Mary left the church and went to Mississippi. He had a Georgia passport to cross Indian territory in 1810. There was a William Baxter on the passport with him. He also went with his unnamed children whose names I have been trying to find. One of the Baxters was nearly beaten to death while crossing the Saltcatcher River while on a wagon train south. Saltcatcher is a corrruption of the Indian name Saltenhatchie for the river which was handed down. Hatcha is a Choctaw? word for river and occurs in several places across the South, as in Atchafalaya and Pointe a la Hache in the New Orleans are. Regards, Bob

Does anyone have written or oral information about their ancestors who traveled with other families while moving towards Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi then on to Texas. Were there any family stories of Wagon Trains and families they traveled with. Waldrops left North Carolina/South Carolina came thru Georgia, crossed over to Alabama and in to Mississippi and settled in DeSoto, Mississippi. They were in Gwennette and Harris Counties Georgia 1820-1840s. Some of the Families were Waldrop, Thornton , Heards and Eavenson. It appears they traveled together and also married one another. Other family members I am researching that might have traveled in the same Wagon Trains. Waldrop, Williford, Woulard, Baxter, Deas, Dearman, Loper, McKenzie, McBride, Aldridge, Livermans, White, Higgingbotham, Heard, Thornton, Eavenson, Buckalew, Masters, Richardsons, Colsons, Grimes, McIIwains., Longs, Coopers, Platts, Chasons, Thomas, Alexanders. These families were in the same area about the same time and I am researching to see if they came to the same areas .These families married among themselves. Anyone have any information how their family traveled and arrived to where they settled down and who they might have traveled with. Thanks for any help. Sandra

The traditional story of my family is that in 1811 they walked over the mountains thru the Cumbeerland Gap to Kentucky. Then they came by boat in 1845 up the rivers to Platt Missouri....They did have a team of horses and a wagon (I think) on the boat...
