    1. [BAXTER] George V. BAXTER (b abt 1825 - PA, d bef 1870)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: waroper Surnames: Baxter, Crawford, Roper Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baxter/2784/mb.ashx Message Board Post: George V. BAXTER (b abt 1825 - PA) seems to have married Lethe A. (Crawford) ROPER, the widow of Frederick Augustine ROPER, just before 1850. They are shown to be residing in Hampshire, Virginia (now West Virginia) in the 1850 Census. George is shown to be age 25. Lethe is shown to be age 34. Lethe's son James ROPER is shown to be age 16 in this record. See: "United States Census, 1850," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M8D3-JLX : accessed 11 March 2015), George Baxter, Hampshire county, Hampshire, Virginia, United States; citing family 483, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.). * By 1860, George and Lethe BAXTER had relocated to Jefferson Township, Green County, Ohio. George is shown to be age 34. Lethe has shaved more than a decade of her age and is shown to be age 32. Their son John [H.] BAXTER, age 8, born Ohio, appears within the record. Immediately adjacent is Lethe BAXTER's son James H. ROPER and his wife Mary (Smith) ROPER. See: "United States Census, 1860," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MCLC-DXM : accessed 11 March 2015), George Baxter in household of William F Oxley, Jefferson Township, Greene, Ohio, United States; from "1860 U.S. Federal Census - Population," Fold3.com; citing p. 3, household ID 17, NARA microfilm publication M653, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.; FHL microfilm 803,968. * By 1870, Lethe is shown to be residing in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, within the household of her son James H. ROPER (erroneously Indexed as Letta RAXLIE at FamilySearch.org). Lethe is shown to be age 58 and born in Maryland. John H. BAXTER is shown to be age 15 and born in Virginia. See: "United States Census, 1870," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M62S-6MF : accessed 11 March 2015), Letta Raxlie in household of James H Roper, Ohio, United States; citing p. 46, family 304, NARA microfilm publication M593 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 552,700. * Lethe and John BAXTER seem to have moved to Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, between 1875 and 1880, and resided there for about a decade prior to returning to Columbus, Franklin County, OH. Apparently, while residing in Cleveland, Lethe CRAWFORD filed a Civil War Pension Application 15 Apr 1882 (291,710) in respect of the service of her husband George V. BAXTER. George is apparently shown therein to have been a soldier in B Co., 1 U.S. Inf. Lethe was granted a Pension with Certificate No. 237,838. Lethe is shown within Ohio death records to have died on 04 Sep 1894 in Columbus, Franklin, OH. See: "Ohio, County Death Records, 1840-2001," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F6ZC-RQH : accessed 11 March 2015), Lethe A Baxter, 04 Sep 1894; citing Death, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, United States, source ID p 308 & 309, County courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 2,026,909. * Lethe A. BAXTER (b 19 Oct 1813, d 04 Sep 1894 - Columbus, Franklin, OH) is shown to be interred at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus. See: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=51859915 * George and Lethe BAXTER's son John H. BAXTER (b 13 Apr 1852, d 24 Jul 1898 - Columbus, Franklin, OH) is also shown to have died in Columbus. See: "Ohio, County Death Records, 1840-2001," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/QVNS-TD54 : accessed 11 March 2015), John H. Baxter, 24 Jul 1898; citing Death, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, United States, source ID p 580, County courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 2,026,909. John is also interred at Green Lawn Cemetery. See: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=68486111 * * * I haven't seen Lethe BAXTER's pension application, which probably provides other valuable genealogical information about George V. BAXTER. * * * * * Does anyone know George BAXTER's precise date of death and place of death? Did he die during the Civil War? Does anyone know the identity of George V. BAXTER's parents? * * * * * NOTE: I have posted other information regarding Lethe A. CRAWFORD, Frederick ROPER and Lethe CRAWFORD's children from her marriage to Frederick at the RootsWeb ROPER Message Board. However, it was a poor copy and I would love to have a clear copy if possible. 1. [BAXTER] Baxter Family of Matagorda County, TX
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bethbow_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.baxter/2782/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am writing a paper on the following tragic event that took place in Matagorda during the 1870s. I am interested in locating Williams, Allen, Kilbride, and Eidlebach descendants of Wilhelmina Williams who might have knowledge of the story listed below. I would love to be able to locate photographs of Wilhelmina and her spouses to help illustrate my paper. My great-great grandmother was Ann Elizabeth Williams Baxter, sister of Wilhelmina Williams. The family tradition as related below is steeped in fact. I have a copy of Wilhelmina's divorce petition that relates the whole sordid affair. I am especially interested in learning if her son, Willie Allen had any descendants. "Dr. J. Randolph Allen Dr. J. Randolph Allen, age 22, born in New York, was enumerated in the 1870 Matagorda County census. His wife was Minna, age 17, born in Texas. He married Wilhelmina Williams, daughter of John and Catherine Williams in 1870. They were living in Matagorda, Texas and had one son, William Clifford "Willie" Allen (Jan 15, 1872 - Sep 26, 1927). Family tradition claimed that Lucy Williams and her sister, Sarah "Sallie," were murdered by their brother-in-law, Dr. Allen, who was in love with Lucy while married to their sister, Wilhelmina. When Lucy became engaged to Henry Eidlebach, Dr. Allen poisoned her out of jealousy, and then poisoned Sallie to divert suspicion. He fled the town with the Williams boys in hot pursuit, but he escaped. Later the family got a letter from him from Africa in which he told that the Williams boys had been all around him, but he had buried himself in the sand. Sallie and Lucy were buried on the Matagorda Peninsula and their graves are lost. On May 15, 1877, Wilhelmina Allen married Edward Kilbride (b c 1845), in Matagorda County and had a daughter, Mamie (married Max G. Klein), and a son, Harry. Henry Eidlebach was Wilhelmina's third husband. They were married June 25, 1885. Their children were Eugene and Henry. " About this same time J. Randolph Allen tried to murder John Clauder of Matagorda. Attempted murder charges were brought against him, but I'm not sure he was ever caught. I am specifically interested in finding out if there are descendants of any of the people mentioned above. I am interested in locating family letters, diaries, or journals that might shed some light on these events. Any help that you could offer would be so greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Beth Ellis Bow [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If so, you can find a great deal of information about your mother's family. Here are a few items: 1930 census, Concord, Clackamas, Oregon, Lila M. Bently, age 6 (your mother) is listed as the "adopted daughter" of Chesley J. Bently (born in Missouri) and his wife Margarette Bentley. (born in Kansas) Living in the same household are Lila V. Bently, age 32, born in Oregon and Helen Bently, age 29, born in Oregon. Helen is listed as "divorced." That may or may not be true. 1940 census, Tract 14, Portland, Oregon, again Helen Bentley is listed as divorced and is living with her father C. J. Bentley, age 69 (b. Missouri) , her sister Lela V. Bentley, age 42, and Lela Mae Bentley, listed as the "adopted daughter " of C. J. Bentley. 1920 census, Portland, Oregon, Helen is actually listed as Orpha H. Bentley, age 19, b. in Oregon, living with her father Chesley J Bentley, mother Margurite, sister Lila, and Chesley's Mother-in-law, Martha L. Daniels. born in Indiana. Presumably Marguerite Bentley is née Marguerite Daniels. On Find-a-Grave: Marguerite Bentley died 6 Jul 1935 and is buried at Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland, Ore. Chesley J. Bentley d. 9 Feb 1964 and is buried in the same cemetery. Ancestry: 1880 census, Howell Prarie, Marion, Oregon. Chesley J. Bentley, age 9, living with parents George W. Bentley, age 42, and Emma Bentley, age 36. Also Sisters Viola and Lillie and brother Landrew (or Andrew). Ancestry: Oregon Selected Births and Christenings: Chesley Jonathan Bentley, b. 25 Feb 1871, Holt, Missouri. Parents George Washington Bentley and Emma Ray Little. Civil war records on Ancestry show that George W. Bentley served in the Union Army during the Civil War, Company I, 42nd Missouri Infantry. Enlisted Oct 31, 1864, Mustered out March 22, 1865. Although on the 1880 census, George Bentley is listed as born in Tennessee, on the 1870 census, he is living in Dallas, Holt, Missouri, and is listed as born in Kentucky. "Oregon, Deaths and Burials, 1903-1947" on Ancestry shows George W. Bentley, b. 1839, died 19 Jun 1927. Father's name John W. C. Bentley, Mother's Name: Burnett. "Marion County, Oregon, Marriage Records 1849-1900 on Ancestry shows Chesley J. Bentley, over 21 of Clackamas Co. and Marguerite Daniels, over 18, m. 16 Apr 1894 at Rectory of St. Paul's Church by Lawrence Sinclair, Rector, St. Pau's Church. Witnesses Willard Stevens and Nettie Randall. Social Security Death Index on Ancestry shows Chesley Bentley, b. 25 Feb 1871, d. Feb 1964, on Oregon. I see that your tree lists Dorothy Pett as his mother. Have you found proof of Dorothy being his mother? If you have not already done so, I suggest that you obtain his death certificate from Pierce County, Washington, Certificate #011635. See http://www.tpchd.org/records-permits/birth-death-records/ Unfortunately, his marriage record to Lila does not list his parents' names. A John E. Baxter from Multnomah, OR married an Edith Rogers on March 8, 1949 in Vancouver, WA. When you compare that record to the Marriage Record (Stevenson County, WA) of John E. Baxter from Multnomah, OR to Lila Hunter in 1950, you will see that John E. Baxter's signatures on both documents are the same. As you probably know, he enlisted with the Army Corp of Engineers on 17 Nov 1945 for service in the Hawaiian Department. At that time, his residence was Wahkiakum County, Washington. The enlistment states that he was born in Oregon in 1924. I find a 1940 census listing for Ernest Baxter, age 15, living with parents Louis and Gladys Baxter in Rosburg, Wahkiakum county, Washington. He also has an older sister Alice. On the 1930 census, the same family (Louis, Gladis, Allice and Earnest Baxter) are living in Crooked Creek, Wahkiakum, Washington. Louis was born in Oregon about 1895 and Gladis was born in Iowa, according to this census. However, Earnest and Allice's listings state that their mother was born in New Jersey, so it would appear that Gladis is not their mother. You might also consider trying to obtain a birth certificate from Portland, Oregon. See http://public.health.oregon.gov/BirthDeathCertificates/GetVitalRecords/Pages/forms.aspx If you find that Louis Baxter was his father, and need help tracing him, please feel free to send me a message via Ancestry.
