Dear Listers, I visited this List earlier this year but am now back with more extra information. My family is thought to have come from Switzerland, but recent finds may indicate the family was on the move. My great grandfather Charles (Carl) GUNTHER said, on several official occasions, that he had been born in Switzerland. We also knew that he may have had a brother called Fritz, which I believe is short for Frederick. A Frederick has been found in Rochester, New York, who fits the bill but he was born in Bavaria. My great grandfather described his father, also Charles (Carl) GUNTHER, as being a labourer. It is possible a small family moved from Bavaria to Switzerland (and maybe even back) during the 1830s-1840s. Frederick GUNTHER (also recorded as GUENTHER, GINTER and GEINTER) was born in Bavaria in c. 1833, married a Catherina DOELL, from Hesse-Darmstadt, in c. 1865, possibly in Canada, and there followed two children - Emma and Anna. They then moved to Rochester and were found on the 1880 Census minus Anna. Emma later married a Jacob MAECHERLIN in 1886 in Rochester. Frederick died in 1908 and Catherina in 1915. I would be interested to hear about any GUNTHER or GUENTHER families in Bavaria. I have only the name of the two sons - Frederick and Carl and their father Carl. I am not sure of the naming systems used in Bavaria (or Switzrland, come to that) but often the first son seems to be named after the father - so, there may have been a Carl before Frederick who died and thus a second one. We have a story in the family about a mother being Polish, but that may be further back and could be the elder Carl's mother. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Best wishes from a wet Japan (Typhoon 15 is on its way here), Charles
