    3. Hi Listers, This is a long shot! I am searching for the origins of my great-grandfather. His name was Charles (Carl) GUNTHER and he claimed he was from Switzerland, however all searches for him there have hit brickwalls. I now wonder if his family were from Germany but maybe the mother was Swiss and though Carl was born there his family actually lived elsewhere. We have a story in the family that he ran away with his brother from a strict father and ended up in the UK around 1845. From his own mouth came that he had lived 50 years in Britain, 23 of them in Flint, Flintshire and served 10 years in the British Army. On the marriage certificate he gave his father's name as Charles - presumably originally Carl - and his age as 30. That was in 1870. But in 1888 he said he was 51 years old and his death certificate gives 56 in 1896. Census Reports for 1871 through 1891 give slightly different ages. So I am looking for a Carl GUNTHER son of Carl GUNTHER born in 1835 to 1840. He may have had a brother called either Fritz or Martin. And either he came to the UK with him or with the rest of his family in around 1845. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. I cannot access websites so I am limited to e-mail only. Best wishes, Charles P.S. Yes, I'm Charles too, as was my father and some uncles and great uncles.
