Hi Donna, Most German towns from 1800 still exist today, so any modern detailed map would be good. However, that is tedious and even harder since you appear to have a spelling error. Here's a suggestion for you. Go to the complete alphabetic Bavaria town list at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bavaria/places.html and search for a town or towns spelled similar to "Barrastot ". Alternatively, go to JewishGen town locator at http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm , insert Borrastot, select Germany for the country, and Start The Search. Alternative spellings will be suggested, such as Barsadt, Berstadt, Bierstadt, and Borrstadt. Click on the coordinates of any town to see it presented on an interactive map. Other list members have suggested that the initial B may be a V, so you can insert next time the name Varrastot and see where that goes. I searched the online Germany phonebook for the name "Knoffloch". Strangely, there is no one in all of Gemany with that name today. Could this be another spelling error? Could it have been something else, like "Knoblauch"? Many German immigrants had their names changed in America, sometimes accidentally due to spelling errors and sometimes intentionally to avoid things back home. If the correct spelling is not Barrastot, how will you recognize the correct town name if you see it? Do you have other clues regarding the town? A nearby river or forest or city? I've just found a 1903 letter in the most beautiful cover of a guardian angel with 2 children with the word Giickwunsch (just don't understand German lettering to make things worse) Does anyone know what this means? It must be a letter from a cousin or perhaps a nephew - Christian Schneider - of my great grandmother Marie Doehla Dammann who came from Tennersreuth to America.
Glückwunsch means "congratulation".
