It seems to me, that in USA everybody in previous times spelled just what he wanted ;-) (i.e. listened), whereas in Bavaria people tried to be more consistent. Is this taken as the reason to excuse sometimes careless spelling now? I for my side will try to be careful to spell names as I find them, since (even if it is not guaranteed) the likelihood that related people are recorded with the same spelling is higher than with different spelling. I think correct spelling (i.e. as found) is a rather important detail to find relations - at least inside Bavaria - and shouldn't be lost.
