Hi, Peggy, I am also researching the GAREISS surname. Johann GAREISS was born in 1833 in Grafengehaig, Kr. Kulmbach. He is the son of Johann Adam GAREISS and Margarethe FLESSA. They are Lutheran. Johann immigrated to Chicago in 1853. Grafengehaig is about 8 km straight [longer by road] northeast of Stadtsteinach. This is certainly close enough to be related. Do you have any more information?
