Hi, My grandmother was named Kunigunda as one of her three names. However, her lide of the family came from Prussia. My research of the name has come up with the following quotes: #1. > Kunigunda was Empress, the wife of Henry II, Emperor. It just happened that > both she and her husband were canonized. (Other Kunigunda[s] were also > canonized which is why there are several different St Kunigunda's days in > the Catholic calendar of Saints. > > However, even Lutherans were known to name children after Catholic Saints. > Martin Luther did not plan on starting a new church, merely correcting the > errors and corruption in the then Catholic Church. > > And, of course, Kunigunda was Empress (Henry II was Holy Roman Emperor from > 1002 to 1024). > #2.....> > I am told that March 3, is St. Kanugunda Day. This person said that on > the Christian nameday is 3rd of March, and onthis day the soil starts to > warm up The German empress of the 11th century became a Saint and her > tomb is in Bamberg Cathedral. Kuni means kin, and gund means fight. > Fighting for her kin. So, I would assume that whether she was Catholic > or Lutherin; it didn't matter. It was what she stood for that made her > such a well admired Saint. Therefore, people named their children after > her. It would be interesting to find out more about her. #3. >> All of > my relatives from Hesse Darmstadt area were Evangelisch. I have seen > the name Kunigunda twice, and that is why I asked about this unusual > question. > > I am told that March 3, is St. Kanugunda Day.
