    1. Re: [BAVARIA] Kunigunda name
    2. Georg Paulus
    3. "Kunigunda" is the latinized churchbook version of "Kunigunde". Saint Kunigunde died in 1033 or 1039. She was the daughter of Count Siegfried of Luxemburg and the wife of Emperor Heinrich II. Together with her husband she is known as the founder of the diocese of Bamberg (Franconia, Bavaria). She is buried in the cathedral of Bamberg. Her name is celebrated on July 13. Due to this history, Kunigunde has been a popular name certainly in Franconia, but also in other parts of Bavaria and Germany. I checked an ancestory file of 412 female individuals from Bavaria. 4 of them were baptised Kunigunde (1 of them in the 16th century, 3 in the 17th century). Today, if you check the German phone directory for certain female names (I did this in conjunction with the popular name SCHMIDT, as my system would not search for a first name only) you get the following results: Maria: 1002 hits Barbara: 435 hits Anna: 675 hits Berta: 109 hits Kreszenz: 3 hits Franziska: 98 hits Kunigunde: 15 hits I hope this information helps to get a better idea of the name Kunigunde today and in former times.
