If your area is anything like Union County, New Jersey the newspapers didn't carry obits from local people until after 1900. Only very prominent residents were mentioned. My Kempf families' obit never made it into the paper in the 1860s and 1870s. Call your local library and college to see if they have the microfilmed papers.
