One of my husband's ancestors, Catherine, came to Texas from Bavaria between 1842 and March of 1846 with her daughter, Mary Ann. Her name appeared on a marriage license in Texas as Catherine Stooken. Years later Mary Ann Stooken appeared as Mary Ann Stokes. Does anyone have any ideas as to a correct spelling for that Bavarian name, Stooken. Also, is it possible Stokes would have been the name coming from Germany? Re: Baizen: Bayern was spelled Bion on the census info for Catherine. Couldn't find that one on the map either. Names were spelled just like they sounded. Thanks, Linda
